I was looking for a place that made meals that could be frozen for a postpartum gift. My friend is the kind of person who truly has *everything* so thinking about what to gift her was hard. This was second baby so she let us know they didn't "need" anything. I had another friend recommend Lee's as she goes here as a go to baby shower gift. I popped in on a Saturday around 2:00 and was greeted by two young men. The shop is small but has an extensive selection of meats, meals, sandwiches, etc. They had about 5 casserole options and a variety of sizes. I chose the chicken tetrazzini, king Ranch chicken, and the chicken pot pie. The meals came with heating instructions. I will definitely be back. The gift was a hit at the baby shower and so many people asked me where I went to buy this. read more

Went back to try 'Cooper's Cheesesteak Sandwich'. I don't know who Cooper is, but he's a very happy man. While completely different than a Philly Cheesesteak, this may actually outshine most incarnations. Instead of an Amoroso roll, the house sourdough is a soft, doughy pillow cradling strips of tenderloin steak with onions, peppers and melted provolone. This is a must-try if you visit this hidden gem of a place! Check out my earlier review re: seating and times to visit. This place retains its score of a 5 out of 5 on the 'CTJ Scale', as noted below. 5 out of 5 stars: Come-to-Jesus good. Would be OK passing away after finishing a plate here. 4 out of 5 stars: Come-to-Mary good. Would be OK being seen eating here by Mother Mary. 3 out of 5 stars: Come-to-Joseph good. Would be OK having a beer here with Jesus' Dad. 2 out of 5 stars: Come-to-the-Apostles good. Meh. Wouldn't have my last supper here. 1 out of 5 stars: Come-to-Nobody good. I wouldn't have my penultimate supper here, either. read more

Ok, wow. Based on the reviews and my searching for a decent butcher shop, I stopped by Lee's Market. First, this place is definitely NOT a "gem". More of a conundrum. Vert tiny and austere. The pics of the guys sitting at the counter...there is no counter any more. I was there on a Friday at around 1:30. There are no meats displayed. None. The glass display case had some stuff in it but the glass is dark and it's hard to tell exactly what is in there. Mystery food. I ordered a rib eye and a NY strip. I asked that they each be around a pound. The girl said "we don't do weights we do by thickness". Hmm. So I ordered each at 1 1/4" think, which she said was standard. Then you sit and wait. No selecting, you just take what they bring out. I also ordered a tenderloin sandwich, as many people have given this rave reviews. She said "no sandwiches". None. When I asked why, she mumbled something and pointed towards the kitchen. When I asked when they will have sandwiches available, she said "after the first of the year". It's December 15th! Not really sure what this place is about, but it's definitely not on my good vibes wavelength. Not even close. So, the search for a good butcher shop in Austin continues. In the meantime I'll need to be content with Central Market and the crowds. read more

A hidden gem in central Austin! If you're looking for prime meats or handmade casseroles with the attention of a careful hand, look no further. Lee's is the kind of place that has lots of regulars -- and that's not by accident. What brought me here today was a coworker's recommendation for the "Cooper's cheesesteak" sandwich. While I can't say that it's a good "cheesesteak", it's an amazing steak sandwich with cheese! Definitely one of the better things I've eaten in recent memory. The cheesesteak is made of actual legit cuts of steak which are seared and then cheesed up with peppers and onions. I added jalapeños to mine because I'm good like that. The only disappointment was the bun it was served on. The "sourdough" was very, very sweet. Almost to the point that it should have been called a Hawaiian roll. Had it been served on a crusty roll that can stand up to the meat, it would have changed the game. Anyway I love that places like Lee's exist because they're fill a void which the "big box grocery stores" leave open. When you want something good or something special, go to Lee's. Definitely check them out if you get the chance. read more

Seriously the only place in town you can find veal cutlets or scallopini. No other place in town has it they only have ground veal we stopped in never been here before. Staff was amazing, A local quaint set up. We were able to grab a decent little bottle of wine some deviled eggs and broccoli salad which were both amazing and veal cutlets for our dinner tomorrow night. Thank you Lee's meat market for saving the day and coming through with what we needed! read more

My friends and I have been coming here since I moved to Austin, ~2 years ago and have never had any complaints until today. We walked in the other day and the chef winked at my friend, and stared her down the entire time she was in line/ordering. It made us both incredibly uncomfortable, and it felt like he was trying to frighten us (when we left and got back to the car, she was shaking). We called to speak with the owner, who was female. We wanted her to know that we felt creeped out by his behavior, so much so that we don't feel comfortable returning. The owner defended his behavior though (!!!), and tried to tell us he was just looking out the window, and she'll be sure to tell him not to do that only more. She essentially told us we were wrong for feeling uncomfortable, which was frustrating, but her attitude was incredibly passive aggressive. I think it's important to note that when we've visited with men in our group, the chef never does this. It happened today when it was just girls. I don't want to bash Lee's Market. I love the food - but the way the we were treated today outweighs all the things I love about this place. I hope no other women have to experience this read more

Finally! I've been meaning to hit this spot for what seems like forever. It kept popping up in my feed and I'd try to re re re bookmark it. I got the opportunity to try it recently and man, that beef tenderloin is something to write home (er... yelp) about. My salad was covered with at least 1.5 lbs of tender delicious beef tenderloin. We also tried the pimiento cheese (baller!) and the deviled eggs (a-ok.) They've got a ton of catering options and meat ready to go. I'll be back to try those offerings and though I thought they were a little pricey, definitely an option for local prepared foods for your event. read more

Wish I could give zero stars for horrible customer service. Do not purchase catering or party trays. They do not feed 12-15 people. You are better off just buying from their case. Their food is good but not good enough for us to go back after trying to give them a chance to make things right. So disappointing. read more

Be sure to stop by this hidden little gem in the Jefferson Square shopping center if you are looking for a huge sandwich, at not a huge price. Lee's is tucked in the back corner or the lot and to be honest, I had driven by it for years without ever noticing it. So, for those of you who have tunnel vision while driving, when you are driving up Jefferson, look to your right. There you go. The sandwiches are typically enormous and come box-style with potato chips (just grocery store plain chips- so don't get too excited here). Prices are low and so are seating options, so probably better for a to-go order. I wish they would put up a few little cafe tables outside, but space is a bit limited. I have not tried any other than the sandwiches off the menu, but plan on ordering some cuts of meat in the future will update. read more

I'm a Lee's addict, it's official. I called in an order to Lee's for lunch today: Cheesesteak sandwich boxed lunch. It was ready just as I arrived and still warm by the time I got home. Once again, Lee's failed to disappoint. So meaty and cheesy, I want another just thinking about it. Plus for an even 8 dollars, I got a huge cheesesteak, chips, and a peanut butter cookie (out of this world). Speed, consistency, and value plus a damn good sandwich. I'd have to attend meetings to give this place up. read more

A guy at my office got a catered meal for all of us -- for 5 bucks a person, we could get any sandwich or salad on the menu, plus a cookie (and chips if you got a sandwich). The food portions were incredibly generous -- giant rolls, huge salads, thick sandwiches and burgers, chocolate-chip cookies the size of an outstretched hand (and the chocolate chips weren't chips, they were CHUNKS). The food was very good and fresh. HOWEVER -- star docked because I specified NO CHEESE on my salad, and the sticker on my to-go box said "NO CHEESE" on it, but I still had cheese! My stomach doesn't take to cheese very well and it was the shredded kind so I had to pick off the bits. I would've called to complain but then I wouldn't have been able to eat with the rest of the group, so I just wiped the cheese off to the best of my ability and ate my food. I know that it was probably just an oversight and I assume someone was on autopilot while making the salad and boxed it up without double-checking, but still. For people with food intolerances that's not too cool. read more

The sandwiches were great, lots of filling and great flavours. I ordered 2 steaks and creamed corn costing over $30. I asked for the steaks plain but they were seasoned which wasn't what I wanted. I paid over $110 for a fried turkey from Lee's Meat Market in Austin. It was the driest turkey ever. No one would eat it. When I called to share my views, Courtney, the manager, just said she would share my comments. Don't waste your money the next time you need a fried turkey. Even if you can't cook, you would do a BETTER job. Trust me. read more

UPDATE: I went back and spoke to a different employee, in the context of asking her if my experience was how they normally conduct business. She conferred with the owner in the back of the store. They both agreed the man who gave me the bag full of marinated meat "would never do that." Their statement was that they only use dry rubs on their meat. So basically they told me I was lying. They offered to do nothing for me. This is a guaranteed way to not only lose all of MY business, but to ensure I will tell everyone who asks me about my experience there. Whoops. read more

How long has this place been here? And how did I just discover it now? It's pretty damn delicious. I've had the Cheesesteak and the Burger, and I would punch a kitten in the face for either one right now. The sourdough roll is also very tasty, and while it might not be "punch a kitten" amazing, I would still punch a full grown cat for some. The sandwiches are very large in size and reasonable in price. One kitten punchable sandwich, a side of regular old tater chips, and a bottle of water will run you about $7.50. There are only two reasons that I can't give Lee's 5 stars. #1: They say they will cook your burger to temp, yet it comes out overdone. I think the cooks there only know how to cook a burger until it is "done". The terms "Medium" and "Mid-Rare" are not in their Vocab. Lame-O. #2: The ordering process is very inefficient. When it's busy (read, more than 5 people in line), they seem to struggle. It's a tiny little place so I can forgive this mostly, but it is still a slight bit annoying. Anyway.... if you want to have some food that is so good that it will make you want to punch kittens, you gotta try Lee's. Now, where's that kitty? read more

This place is pretty great. I've taken a couple of people here for lunch. It's really low key and better for carry out as there are only about 5 seats. Food is top quality and consistently great. I grew up in Kansas on a farm and around tons of freshly butchered meat. My husband's father was in the cattle business in Kansas, and we have been fortunate enough to get some of the best cuts to be had from the midwest. That said, my husband and I have always said that there was no place in Texas that had better cuts of meat than our places in Kansas...we were a bit spoiled. We knew they existed, and after living here for 12 years have been on a never-ending quest to find exceptional cuts in Austin. We went to every 'market', organic farm, high-end restaurants, and still disappointed. We became convinced that there was no great place to get meat in Austin.... THEN, we met our match. We found Lee's (cue the angel harp music). Holy Mother Mary of Gawd...this place is fantastic. I'm not sure why we did not discover this place until now, but I'm happy we did. We purchased the fillets and I thought I had died went to heaven and was seeing the Man himself at the pearly gates. Yes, it was THAT good! Sure they are expensive, but if you want an EXCELLENT cut of meat, THIS is the place. We also got the twice baked potatoes. Again...awesome! no disappointment there. We ordered lunch and my salad and my husband steak sandwich was fantastic, especially for the price. I can't think of one negative, aside from maybe the lack of seating, but honestly, I could care less. When food is that good, is well worth standing around for. read more

Reviews of the Beef Tenderloin Sandwich led me here; it was generously sized for the price, tender and with good bread, but otherwise pretty unremarkable. The ribeye steaks I bought to take home and grill were very good - seemed comparable to top-of-the-line beef from Central Market, etc., in flavor and in price. The tiny location is nice as strip center shops go, and the service and atmosphere give you all the warm and fuzzy shop-local vibe you could ask for. This place might be awesome for the advanced meat connoisseur who wants special cut specifications, as most everything appears to be cut to order. read more

My wife picked up a cooked chicken for dinner. At home halfway through eating a thigh, I realized that I was eating raw chicken. I put it in the fridge and took the remainder of the chicken back. The guy behind the counter took it into the back, came back and said he didn't see anything raw. I asked him to bring the thigh back up and I showed him some of it - pink, translucent meat. He said it's just normal, the fat. I told him that I have 13 years of restaurant experience, food safety certification, and know raw chicken when I see it. I showed him the picture I took at my dinner table and he said, "I can't validate that photo." When I asked what he meant he said, "how do I know that's really the same chicken?" I asked for the owner. She came up, didn't say a word, I explained the issue, she said that she'll give me a refund but said they use meat thermometers and she hires smart people so this doesn't happen. I showed her the chicken and the photo and she had nothing to say. I told her I don't appreciate being insulted and again, unapologetic. Mistakes happen, but apologize, don't be rude and defensive, and don't insult your customers. It's called customer service. Won't be back. read more

I forgot how awesome this place is, the sandwiches are huge and delicious, and the price is less than you would pay at other fast food sandwich shops. But the crown jewel is the tenderloin steak salad, it's massive! Sooo much steak and bacon, get the balsamic vinegrette dressing. $10 - best deal in Austin! read more

Just started new job in new digs and need to build up new places to eat. Lee's is my first lunch place to eat South of Round Rock. Ribeye sandwich on sourdough with provolone, horseradish, and standard veggies. Plus chips. Very, very good. Kinda tough to find though. At least for a bozo from Georgetown who's not used to all these crazy short roads with odd turns and bicyclers. Officially on my short-drive quick-lunch list. read more

One of the best sandwiches in Austin. I repeat, the beef tenderloin sandwich is one of the best sandwiches in the city. You pay $6.95 (including tax) for an insane amount of delicious beef tenderloin piled high on a sweet sourdough bun. I thought the best sandwich buns in the city were at Phil's Ice House, but Lee's is just as good. The sandwich includes all the trimmings & chips. I felt like I was stealing from them that they only charged me $6.95. A downtown restaurant could easily charge $10+ for this sandwich. There is very limited seating inside (a few stools by the window) so this is mostly a pickup location. They had a full menu of sandwiches and salads, plus lots of prepared foods. I look forward to trying out more of the menu. Go by Lee's and try the beef tenderloin sandwich, you will not be disappointed. read more

Everything I've had at Lee's Meat Market has been beautifully executed and eating lunch at this cozy restaurant/meat market has always resulted in my having an exquisitely happy tummy. I found Lee's meat market by accident after moving from Manhattan 2 years ago and it is one of our best local discoveries. Their meat is by far superior to Whole Foods and Central Market and the prepared foods and sandwiches are delicious, especially the tenderloin. The owner Lee and staff make everyone feel comfortable regardless of gender. read more

Lee's Meat Market is quite possibly the most no-frills meat market around. Here, you won't get much more than pure meat, whether it be swine, cattle, or chicken, even processed protein such as sausage. You will be stuffed to the seams with meat, whether you prefer "for here" or "to go." Close quarters here, to say the least. Offerings are pretty standard, and a meal will run right around $8-9, depending on additions and/or drinks. That being said, the simplicity could be its downfall. They are cranking out spreads like pimento cheese and sides like mac and cheese, but I very much prefer more unique combinations of bread and fillings. Specifically, the burger was far from "incredible." The ground meat was indeed cooked to my desired temperature of Medium, with its spot-on light pink interior. Unfortunately, the density level was likened to that of a hockey puck. Its crusty edges provided a great texture, but it was just far too dense. Now, you gotta give the sourdough a go-around, even if you are a wheat-based starch junkie. I really do wish that every Austin burger joint utilized these amazing sourdough buns. The texture was the perfect amount of spongy and chewy with a perfect tartness that was balanced with every nuance of sweet that you want in a burger bun. From the outsider's perspective, LMM appears to be the quintessential Austin neighborhood-friendly place at which you get your meat fix, but they also go further and give you a variety of offerings, sides, and quality cuts o' farm carcasses. What in the world are they doing by butchering (pun intended) a burger that could hold so many accolades in Austin? read more

Finally made it here to try to the beef tenderloin sandwich and the beef was totally worth it. Cooked perfectly with some pink in the middle and a delicious peppery seasoning on it. I agree with some of the other reviews though that the sandwich could use something type of sauce or spread to bring it together. I got mayo and spicy mustard on mine and they just didn't bring enough moisture/surface area to the game. Ended up adding a little sauce on it at home. Still totally worth it for the beef. read more

This place is great. The seating is limited so I would definitely recomend getting your order to go. I had the turkey salad sandwich and it was perfectly constructed. The cubes of turkey were cut to just the right size and slight hint of sweetness in the bun played nicely with the bacon. My girlfriend had the tortilla soup and really enjoyed it as well. Beyond the prepared foods they have a solid selection of meats from the butcher counter. This place is very well thought out. I will be back soon. read more
