I was not a good "FIT", so I was told.
Apparently you, as a patient, are not allowed to repeatedly tell the student and/or doctor that they are hurting you during an extraction. Despite my suggestions to pause and adjust, they continued until I was unable to tolerate the pain. I then used profanity to stop them. They listened. Adjustments were made. We continued. I was told that "we have a job to do..." by the student. Wow. I reminded student that their job was not a mechanic working underneath the hood of a car. That it's a human. That can feel pain. I'll skip the 3 or 4 other quotes that were iffy, and proceed to me getting my next appointment (3 extractions) date and time (for 6 weeks later), paying and leaving.
My return didn't quite go as planned. At all. In fact, after confirming my appointment via text and driving an hour to be there, I was told that they would not be doing any extractions that day. Mind you this process has and does cause me anxiety as I face the reality of dentures, and THIS didn't help. I was given a few different reasons as to the change of plans as we walked the corridor, then into the treatment room. As I questioned a few things that the student was telling me, because they didn't sit right with me, I was told that I was rude. Basically the student had not planned to continue with my dental care because I had used the F word at my prior visit. That doing so was "unprofessional" of ME. The patient.
I explained that I had never done that before in my life and that I was in pain during the second extraction of the visit. The corner of my mouth was sore and they weren't acknowledging my repeated attempts to explain that.
So the student was confrontational as I was trying to explain and went out to tell the doctor and another lady (no idea of her position there). I asked for something in writing explaining why they weren't going to continue the treatment plan they had started at the school. The lady came in to tell me the same thing as the student had said. That I was not a good "FIT". She said that I had been hysterical and that the word I had used was not one that she would have chosen. Wow. I didn't choose it after pondering curse words a while. It was a reaction to the pain that I could not endure any longer!
I again asked for something in writing. I was told by the student that they were going to call security.
As I got up out of the chair and walked through the center area, I told the student that they could have at least let me know BEFORE I made the hour long drive! They had SIX WEEKS to let me know.
I was never offered to resolve the issue the student had with a patient advocate, or request another student.
If you've made it this far, I feel this is a good time to mention that this is NOT the first student I have been a patient of at LECOM in Bradenton, Florida.
My journey started there with a lovely, friendly, supportive and caring young lady prior to this student. She also had done some (3) extractions. I had absolutely zero problems during any of my visits with her over a few months. Other than scheduling. That's no reflection on the student. They evidently don't have the doctors' schedule until the end of the week for the following week sometimes.
My point and defense being:
Why only with the most recent student did I encounter issues with the same procedure?
Why were we previously laughing during my extraction visits with her?
Why was I heard by her?
Why did another student also join in on a tough tooth and we also were all laughing?
Why did then even another doctor join in and gave it a crack and was also pleasant and funny?
For that matter, WHY did I go back for three more extractions to the same new student that I had no idea was going to leave me in this mess of a half-done mouth??
I obviously still trusted LECOM to finish what they started.
Maybe this student is not ready for someone that doesn't applaud when they are in pain.
...I should have known when the student asked what my financial situation was, while suggesting that I go to a private dentist for continued care.
Now I'll be requesting my dental records. Something tells me that I won't be getting them without a request from my legal representative.
I really liked them and trusted them with my dental care. I know they won't hear my side, thus the complaint/review.
I DID get to record a good bit of the ordeal so I'm glad for that.
The recording includes my apology to the doctor as I passed him on my way out. He was very nice!
Be cautious! This isn't the first school I've been to for dental needs, but it's certainly the last!
