After researching traffic lawyers for two weeks straight, my boyfriend and I decided to go with Dan Leavitt to fight for him in court. Unfortunately, on our way to vacation in Myrtle Beach, my boyfriend got a speeding ticket in Virginia for 86/70, and if you are reading this review, you probably already know that's considered "reckless driving." I did some research the day after he received this ticket, and the more I read, the worse the punishments got-- up to $2,500 in fines, loss of jobs, criminal record, 12 months in jail. Ultimately, we decided it was too much of a risk to just pay off the fine, especially because his job requires him to drive long distances and also drive company vehicles. After much research, we found that some lawyers charged $125 and others charged $1,200. Mr. Leavitt warned us that the low cost of lawyers could be dangerous-- in some cases, he has seen lawyers not even show up to court. After many e-mails back and forth, Dan charged us $600 to go to court for my boyfriend, which was a blessing since we live in NY and it would have been difficult to make the trip down to VA (and not to mention, extremely RISKY to show up to court without representation). After agreeing for Dan to represent him and paying the cost, the only other thing my boyfriend had to do was provide him with a copy of his driving record, which was clean. We were on our way back from our family vacation @ Shenandoah national park to Florida. My daughter helped me to drive and she was stopped in Emporia, VA and we didn't even know what she did and why she was stopped. We then realized that she didn't move over when she saw 2 police cars at 2 lanes highway. I had out of state plates (CT), in a rental Ford Excursion with my wife and 4 kids, middle lane doing 75 in a 65, 2 cars on both sides of me (one slightly in front of me on the left, BOTH with VA Plates). My wife and I saw the cop and literally at the same time looked to clock my speed. We both saw I was doing 75. I was (as always) very polite with the officer, agreed I was speeding, and was then handed a ticket for 82 in a 65. I asked him if he could please show me where I was clocked at 82, and he said he couldn't. My case was heard in Prince George. Leavitt & Martin were able to get the judge to reduce my misdemeanor Reckless Driving charge to a non-moving violation called Defective Equipment (not a misdemeanor, not reckless, no points in VA). I was returning from Richmond Virginia en-route to Charlotte, NC, traveling on I-95. Traffic groupings of vehicles were consistent within the 80 MPH range and higher. I received a reckless driving ticket in Petersburg, VA. They got the ticket reduced to a non-moving violation. UNBELIEVABLE result! I will recommend that you 1) Get representation as soon as possible, court dates come quick and there are things they will recommend you do. 2) Do the things they say immediately! The course takes like 6 hours, then a mandatory 24 hour break, then another 6 hours. Give yourself a couple days to finish it! And then you have to wait for the certificate. So start it immediately! 3) The calibration is quick and easy. Do it quick as well so he has the real copy of the form, not a scan which some courts won't accept. I got a Speeding ticket in southern Virginia, I was going 87 in a 70 so its considered Reckless driving which would be a misdemeanor. This guy is the real deal! Unfortunately I've had my fair share of speeding tickets over the years. I've ALWAYS gotten an attorney instead of just pleading guilty. Our son got a ticket near Mecklenburg County VA on I-85 driving 85 mph in a 70 mph zone. Anything above 80 mph is considered reckless per local law. ( I was actually doing 70 in a 70 ) I initially thought that I could just pay the fine and move on, however, with some research, I found that anything 20 mph over the limit or over 80 mph is considered reckless driving and carries a fine of up to $5,000 and up to 1 year in jail!
