Mackenzie's Bakery - Sausage pasty, didn't taste that great

I didn't have high expectations for the almond sponge but it was quite good. The chocolate sponge was my least favorite but had exceptional frosting and was topped with chocolate shavings. The highlight of our bakery pillage? The excellent brownie. The strawberry tart looked good and I had some regrets not getting it. Everything was fairly priced.

One bite and I knew they were abnormally good, when I went back inside the cozy interior to take photos I noticed all the awards and plaques they have along the back wall. This is an odd gauge but both days there was a large amount of French and Italian tourists eating here and my stereotype is they are super picky about bread and pastries so I knew it was good. There was a constant line of people but they were quick in grabbing and heating the pastries and making coffee. Our favorite was the bacon and cheese turnover. Had it both days and delicious both times with a nice crunchy and flaky crust and quality bacon and cheese used. We did not repeat the sausage pasty because it tasted under seasoned. They have a "spicy chicken" turnover that had sugar added to the hot sauce to soften the heat, I would call it very mild so don't be scared to order it if you can't eat spicy. This may not be appealing but both days the bags they gave use the pastries in immediately started showing oil stains from the butter they used. The portion sizes are great so I didn't feel too stuffed after eating one of these for breakfast.

My tuna panni was excellent, my son and husband had the fish and chips, which they say was great. We thoroughly enjoyed the warm and welcoming atmosphere. This is because, until he retired in 2008, Yorkshireman Harry Slater was the owner and chief-cook and bottle washer! However, now that he has retired the coffee shop has gone to new ownership but not very far because it has been bought by one of Harry's former Chefs - so you can be sure the high standards which Harry set are being carried on. Inside is clean and very attractively laid out, small but perfectly formed. You can order up an all-day breakfast any time from 9am onwards, or pop in for lunch or early evening meal where a really good choice of menu is available. Baking and delicious sweet puddings are also available along with the usual hot drinks and cold soft drinks. The coffee shop tends to close for a few weeks over the winter but if you have a special occasions you'd like catered then they are more than happy to let you book the room for private functions - at a very reasonable cost. There is no licence but you can bring your own wine and beer for a private function. You will find the Pier Coffee House aka Harry's Coffee Shop down in Kyleakin Village just past Cameron's shop. Enjoy!

The kitchen was knowledgeable and accommodating--no long explanation required, which is always a good sign. Nothing flashy about the place, but that's not what you're here for. Solid, straightforward lunch spot in Portree. Good for: quick lunch with friends Would return.

There are very few options for lunch in Portree apparently, and this is one of the places that was suggested by our Tour operator. It was a quaint little café, with a cute interior and a small, simple menu. My wife opted for the Fish and Chips, and I ordered a Cafe Smash Burger. The food was good, but nothing spectacular. I did enjoy the large strip of bacon in the burger. This is a Cafe where youplace your order and pay for your meal at a counter. The staff don't interact with us much but seemed nice enough. The glass display did have some treats that looked enticing, but we didn't try any of them. All in all, I don't think you have a lot of options for a meal when visiting Portree, so I would say this would probably be the best one to go to. They'll serve you a meal, and it should probably fill you up. But it's nothing special.

While they were out of many of them during our trip, we still thoroughly enjoyed the ones we had. The vegetarian haggis was surprisingly delicious. Having never tasted traditional haggis, this is not a comparison. We enjoyed the flavor and the consistency was a bit crumbly without being too mushy. The vegetarian pizza was solid, although a few too many vegetables included for my personal taste (I prefer pizza with two to three items). And the standard margherita pizza was a winner. The staff was friendly and the view from the deck was nice. If you're looking for a cute lunch stop tucked into the southern edge of the Highlands, Glencoe Cafe is a nice option as you travel through the rolling hills of Scotland.

This charming and cozy little spot seems to be a bit of a social hive in tiny Glencoe. Some would…read morecall it "cramped" rather than "cozy"--the quarters are pretty tight. Given its diminutive size, the cafe has a relatively long menu of panini and other sandwiches, soups, salads, and desserts, with a sharp focus on tea service. Went with a chicken tikka panini, little salad, and darjeeling. It made for a nice lunch stop. Friendly service, as was the case virtually without exception the whole time were in Scotland. In the Glencoe Cafe's mashed-together seating, we U.S. residents of Ohio ended up being surrounded by Michigan folks who were talking about Big 10 football, including a young couple who, as is apparently contractually or maybe even genetically required of almost all U.S. millennials, order all restaurant food by stating which items they want to "do." "Home sweet home," Jeebus. Finally, here's a piece of advice: If you're driving from Edinburgh to the Glen Coe area like we were, and you're thinking about stopping for lunch on the way, consider that once you pass Stirling and a couple of smaller towns just beyond there, dining options are few and far between in this magical area. Although already hungry, we passed up a couple of sketchy-looking (and thronged) tourist cafes on the A82 about an hour before we got to Glencoe, but were glad we did.

The last 200m or so is a steeper one-lane road, but not problems here if you just look ahead a bit. The parking lot by the Oyster Shed has limited spaces. Again here...just don't rush - bring some time to either wait for a spot or to park further down and walk up. We got lucky and got a spot. Two RVs parked here too. Almost couldn't get in and out and did hold everybody up - so I wouldn't recommend bringing your RV up here. Inside you order by tablet. It's quite a big space inside the shop. Once you got your food (outside) you can sit down right in front or head around the corner to the big table with some views. We were happy to sit out front though. Ordered two kinds of cooked topped oysters (salmon/seaweed and spicy seaweed chutney), crab legs, a softshell crab and half-a-dozen of regular oysters. The fresh raw oysters were nice and of good quality. The cooked oysters were decent, maybe easier for oyster-beginners since the toppings cover the sea/oyster flavour. The softshell crab was really tasty - but also a bit pricey for our served size. The best item were the crab legs cluster. A good load of legs for little money. Very tasty! All in all a good place to enjoy some seafood. Some items were great, others also very good - but not great. If we come back it would be for the Crab legs...
