    a dock with several boats

I'm giving this place 4 mainly because we were totally surprised, in a really good way. We'd been here several years ago and it was just meh...nothing special. We drove by last year and it looked closed down. Being on the Northern Neck, there's only a hand full of decent restaurants. We thought we'd give Leadbelly's at the Fairport Marina another look-see because we heard it WAS open. Glad we did! Nothing fancy. Nothing. It's a Marina. You can smell the sea lingering from the work boats docked there. There's outdoor screened porch seating, but it was closed "due to extreme heat". The waitresses wear t-shirts advertising the restaurant...and they wear flip-flops...probably against code, but what the heck. There were 4 of us. I ordered the fried oyster appetizer ($12) with a side of fried cabbage ($2.25) My dinner mates each ordered the oyster platter for $20 which came with 2 sides and "big butt rolls". Now...we've been going to another place where the oysters are tasty, but the portions have shrunk over time. When our friendly waitress (who grew up on the water and didn't eat seafood) brought our meals, I was pleasantly surprised at the huge mound of oysters. They had just the right amount of breading and the fried cabbage was delicious, cooked just right. I forgot to count how many oysters I had, but I know this: I got a big mess (a whole lot) of plump fried oysters for not a lot of money. My buddies had more on their plates than I had for the appetizer portion and they couldn't finish...they toted the remains home. If you are in the area of Fairport on the Northern Neck of Virgina, definitely give this place a try. Down home, local hangout is worth the trip!

a plate of spaghetti and a sandwich

Visited on Friday, May 26, 2023 around 6pm. Starting our season on the bay, this local spot is usually very busy. We were surprised when their were only a hand full of cars in the parking lot; especially for Memorial Day Weekend. Although the entire experience was a disappointment, I will hit the highlights. We were there for over 2 hours. It took about an hour and half for our dinner to come out. We had to ask repeatedly for our dinner salads. I ordered the "Spaghetti Special" for $12.95 which boasted being served with Garlic Bread. What I got was a child portion served with a single slice of toasted sandwich bread. There was no meat in the sauce and the edges of the sauce were "dry bruised" like it was microwaved within an inch of its life. Two other diners ordered the Friday Night Steak Dinner Special for $24.95 which has always been a hit for regular dinners. What came to the table could only be described as "scraps".. like what you would give to the dogs once you were done. There was barely any meat and mostly fat and gristle. Waited for the sides to come out with the steak which was a tiny portion. The very nice waitress admitted she did not want the steaks to get cold just because the sides were not ready. As a positive, the steak sub and fried shrimp dinner that was ordered at the table was noted as good.. however,, the fries that accompanied them were cool and soggy and mostly left untouched. Discussing the experience with neighbors later on, we learned that many locals have stopped eating there in recent months for similar disappointing experiences. We do not wish to harm these newer owners; only encourage them to improve and usher in a return to quality; what has been a steady favorite and "go to" in this area for years and years. And to warn those who seek a good meal of what they may face should they choose to dine here.

The food is great! The service is good. It is very rustic and perfect location for either by land or water.

Formal Complaint Regarding Unprofessional and Aggressive Conduct by Manager…read more I am writing to formally bring to your attention an extremely concerning experience my family and I had at your restaurant on [08/30/2025]. We had a reservation for a party of seven, and what should have been an enjoyable evening was overshadowed by poor service, unprofessional behavior, and, most importantly, extremely aggressive conduct by the manager on duty. Summary of Issues Experienced * Two members of our party ordered sodas, which were incorrect, so they chose to drink water instead. * One member ordered chicken noodle soup but was served only broth with no noodles or chicken. * Another member ordered a flatbread pepperoni pizza, which arrived missing a slice in the center. In place of the missing slice, two crackers with sauce and cheese had been placed on the pizza without explanation. When we brought these issues to our waitress's attention, her responses were dismissive and unhelpful. For example, when notified about the soup and pizza, she simply said "ok?" or "is there anything else?" before walking away without addressing the situation. Interaction with the Manager At the end of our meal, we politely requested to speak with the manager to discuss these concerns and understand what had happened with our food. Instead, the waitress returned and said she had removed the chicken noodle soup and pizza from our bill, which we appreciated, but this was not our request -- we wanted clarification, not compensation. When the manager finally came to our table, he approached aggressively and loudly stated, "WHAT DO YOU WANT? I ALREADY TOOK THIS OFF THE BILL!" We attempted to calmly explain and show him the pizza, but he picked it up with his bare hands, threw it onto the table, and yelled, "TWO PIECES OF PIZZA FELL ON THE FLOOR, SO THEY PUT CRACKERS THERE TO MAKE UP FOR IT!" At no point had this been explained beforehand, and he did not offer to remake or replace the pizza. Escalation at the Front Counter Feeling uncomfortable, we decided to pay our bill and leave. However, when we went to the front counter, we overheard staff discussing our family inappropriately. Moments later, the manager came toward us almost running, loudly asking, "WHAT'S THE PROBLEM NOW?!" As a young woman, I felt threatened and unsafe due to his intimidating tone and proximity. My family tried to de-escalate, but the manager became increasingly hostile, yelling at us to "get out" or he would "call the police." When we asked for his name, he refused to provide it, and when we requested to speak with the owner, he continued yelling and ordered us to leave. Why I Am Reaching Out This experience left my family and me shaken. The aggressive and unprofessional behavior of the manager, coupled with the mishandling of our food and the overall poor service, was entirely unacceptable. At several points during the encounter, it felt as though the situation could have escalated physically, which is deeply concerning for any guest in your establishment. I am respectfully requesting the following: 1. A formal review of this incident and the conduct of the manager and staff involved. 2. Clarification on your policies regarding food handling, guest safety, and customer service. 3. A direct response from ownership or corporate leadership regarding how this situation will be addressed. Our intention in raising these concerns is not only to resolve our personal experience but also to ensure that future guests are treated with professionalism, respect, and courtesy.

I struggled with this rating because I grade on a curve for local business, but couldn't give them…read morethe 4 that part of me wanted to award. I was in there several nights ago and they were not busy. I sat in a large dining room that awaits adornment, but with a fabulous view and tables not too close together. My server, Maddison, was excellent. Sometimes single diners get forgotten, but she took good care of me, conscientiously and professionally. Other employees I encountered were cheerful and forward-leaning to take good care of customers. I had the Captain's Platter, which comes with - 3 nicely spiced, large shrimp that couldn't have been better, - 3 room temperature hush puppies that wouldn't melt butter, - 3 lil' standard fried oysters that didn't really matter - and a piece of rubbery haddock that couldn't pass muster. The fish bravely refused to surrender, but eventually gave way to persistent sawing with my knife. I had it cornered and it wasn't getting away. The filet was about half the size of a slice of sandwich bread. ***The star of the show is the mini-crab cake that was not that mini and the best crab cake in the area, with nice sized chunks of lump crab meat. Wow, that is a fabulous crab cake and the way they make it has a nice, different appearance with a swirl.*** The house salad was blah. One would think in the last few days of August that restaurants would have fresh, ripe tomatoes, but I ate there 3 days ago and the cherry tomatoes in my salad would have been ripe in a couple of weeks if left on the vine. At $39, I thought it overpriced. For that kind of dough, 4 shrimp, oysters and hush puppies would be called for, at a minimum. Locally-caught fish seems to be kinda obvious in "America's Fishing Village." Right? Let's just stop and ask ourselves, Q: "What fish is a Reedville captain going to put on his signature platter?" A: "A Reedville captain is gonna put a nice, big, thick slab of rockfish on his Captain's Platter, that's what. Not a microwaved filet caught by the Gorton's fisherman." That said, it sure was a good crab cake, and a Chesapeake Bay restaurant had damned well better serve a good crab cake. This one is a standout, fer sure, solidly ahead of strong competition. They don't tell you, but the Reedville Market sneaks an extra credit card charge on the bill. Why not make it a line I can see on the bill? That, and the portion size make me wonder if there's a tightwad manager looking to squeeze out a few extra dollars here or there who needs to lighten up. Reedville Market does some things right. I've had some very good meals there before and it has an enjoyable vibe. They did have a couple of easily avoided stumbles introduce tarnish to the evening. They are also trying to do better, at least the line employees I saw were. I'll go back.
