My first visit to Chez Charlie was for a meeting and I initially only ordered coffee and ice water…read more But I was hungry so I ordered the crêpes and fruit salad. Coffee, crêpes & service were very good. However they don't have ice for glasses of water! The fruit salad that comes with the crêpes is canned when I would much prefer fresh, and it contains papaya, which at first I thought was odd but it did taste good. I was a little disappointed but I was thinking about crêpes and fresh fruit with a maple syrup & cream sauce l'd had a few times at Cochon Dingue, a restaurant in Sillery, Quebec City. Their crêpes come with lots of fresh fruit and are much more delicate as well. I've just checked their current menu and they have switched the sauce for a raspberry coulis, which sounds interesting. Anyway, those crêpes cost at least twice as much and it's necessary to have a reservation to be sure of getting any! And of course it's quite a long drive form Sherbrooke! I'm going to try to mix a little coffee cream with some of the maple syrup at Chez Charlie when I go later this week and see how I like it. I do want to point out that the coffee at Charlie's, as the person who took me there calls it, is very very much better than one would expect from a small neighbourhood restaurant. I was very impressed with it. Now I'm going to find out if their decaf is just as good because the first time I was there I drank so much coffee of their delicious coffee I was wired all day and couldn't get to sleep!

Just right for a moderately priced lunch. Excellent quick service. A nicely presented and varied…read moresalad. A very large, full-of vegetable omelette. Not fancy. Not perfectly clean. But well above average.

Excellent pastries and breads, worth a stop if you happen to be in the Eastern Townships!read more

If you happen to be in Quebec Province and travelling from Montreal to Quebec City or vice versa, there are several towns you might stop in to get a cross sectional sample of history, from Chambly, a synthetic, plant and just add water instant suburb in the middle of a corn field, to Cowansville and Waterloo, Bromont and Shefford, places that are seeing tradition eclipsed by suburban sprawl, are still mainly agricultural, and are seeing some hard times, but as they will tell you, hard times are nothing new for these towns that started as pioneer settlements four centuries ago. In any case, to get a sense of all this, I would recommend stopping in at the local boulangerie in any of these towns, getting an elaborate pastry such as tartelette aux fruits, milles feuilles, napoleon, paris-brest, chocolatine or just an eclair with a great cup of coffee, capuccino, espresso, tea, or your choice of caffeinated beverage, and look out the window as people walk by and take you through a story both fascinating and sad at the same time. If you can, buy a loaf of bread to take with you, and if you are feeling forgetful you might neglect to realize this until you are safely back at home.

Some coworkers said they haven't had the best experiences here, but I thought it was really good. The crispy shrimp tacos :) It's in an old church as well, so the atmosphere is really cool. There are plenty of tongue in cheek references throughout both the menu and the interior's decor. The building's soaring arched ceilings are fully utilized: a towering staircase to the glamorous choir loft, climbing art installations, and a sanctuary with an altar that is screaming for a DJ. Side rooms have been turned into private party spaces and the unisex bathrooms guarantee you'll never wait in line. All of our food was tasty but nothing really stood out. Mind you, I'm comparing this to all Québécois food, which is unwaveringly incredible, so it was still very, very good. If I came here again, which I 100% would, I'd love to try more of their fantastic looking menu. I'm not sure what prior bad reviews were talking about, but they are quite old. Our service was great, but if it matters we were there shortly after they opened, so there was no rush. Back to me owning this joint, hahaha, this place has such potential and I hope they're living up to it. I'd love to see this place during peak season when it's going off inside. Really fun place! Check it out!
