I had been here many years ago, and remembered it as one of the best restaurants in Sherbrooke, so when I was asked for suggested places to take my grandfather for his birthday I mentioned Chou de Bruxelles and was glad I did. I guess I am used to Ottawa prices, but I have yet to have a meal in the capital that is as good value for money as the $29.00 Table D'Hote we had at the Chou. It's also a place you can bring your own wine, so that adds to the affordability even more.
For our entrees we had the option of escargots on linguini (which were excellent) as well as salmon or beef terrines. I had the escargots (snails) and found them to have just the perfect amount of garlic and breading. My father had the salmon which he really liked and the beef got good reviews as well. For soup our options were pureed leek or a fish potage, I had the fish which was one of the best fish soup's I had in a long long time, nice thick broth with good chunks of fish and a good herb balance while those who got the leek found it really nice, not too spicy or salty with a nice subtle leek flavour.
Our main course options were also excellent, I had lamb chops with vegetables and scalloped potatoes in a creamy coriander sauce. The lamb was cooked to perfection with a very flavourful sauce. My grandfather had a really nice salmon filet while others in our party got duck on a bed of fruit salad. The strawberries in the salad really helped cut the greasiness of the duck and the sauce was reported as "excellent". There were also pork terrines that were well liked, it came with a camembert sauce, while my girlfriend had moules frites, which were cooked to perfection. Desert was excellent, I had a chocolate belgian ice cream with roasted almonds that was very tasty, the almonds and chocolate really went well together.
We had a reservation for 7, and were pleasantly surprised to be able to get English menus for some of our party who did not speak French, also our waiter was bilingual, which was a real help. He was really good at explaining some of the terms and was very attentive, it really aided with the atmosphere. Overall this place is such good value for money that I would recommend it for any occasion. read more
