The founder is from Nablus, Palestine, where the original pastry shop opened in 1902. My dad knew the original owner. His son moved to Dearborn in the 80's and opened up Masri Sweets, bringing Nablus style Knafeh which is known the world over. It's my favorite thing to eat here. They still carry on in the Palestinian tradition. Samples are handed out generously. You want a piece of pastry which might be $2 or $3 somewhere else, no problem. Take 2. Palestinian culture has historically been very generous with food. Guests never leave without eating, and strangers are always welcomed. What cynical irony that food is currently being used as a weapon of war against these people. I sometimes wonder if their hospitality wasn't their Achilles heel. If you're in Dearborn, head over to Masri sweets to experience not only world class Knafeh, but maybe some of that famous Palestinian hospitality.

Customer service and friendliness were beyond excellent; but be sure to pack your patience at peak times because this spot was slammed. You take a number when you walk in, and then wait, and wait, and wait for it to be your turn. The young lady who helped me was very patient, told me about the differences in their specialized Arabic pastries, showed me her favorites, customer favorites, and descriptions for anything I asked about. I went with a small sampler tray of her favorite specialized pastries and their best sellers. Everything was delicious! Flavors, textures, uniqueness, complexity...all of it. My whole family raved about all the treats, so we ended up going back later in the weekend and purchasing a couple larger trays of our favorites (and some new selections) to take home and share. We all agreed that the Qatayef was easily our favorite; for anyone who doesn't know, it is a small pancake filled with custard, fresh chopped strawberries, chopped pistachios, and drizzled with chocolate...fresh, bright, and mouthwateringly delicious. The only negative I experienced was that when I visited around 10am on Sunday to load up for our trip home, their selections were very limited, and I was told I'd need to come back after 3pm to get some of the things I was looking for.
