I was super excited to find this place in order to enjoy some French classics in plant-based form. We dropped in for lunch and when we arrived, shortly after noon, we were the first guests. A few other parties trickled in through the course of our meal. The menu has many appealing dishes but after narrowing everything down, GF ordered the onion soup and seitan bourguignon. I ordered a vegan "roast" with the side of potatoes. I'm not going to bullshit you, nobody is going to confuse this onion soup for the real deal but once you get past that, it was absolutely excellent. You're hearing this from someone who doesn't like onions or beef broth. I wanted to just try it but ended up funneling half of it down my gullet. The roast was pretty good, as were the potatoes and what I assume was a creamy cauliflower "salad" like side. It was nothing earth shattering but enjoyable and I really appreciated having a vegan meal considering the vast majority of the offerings in this city. Regarding the beef bourguignon, GF says: "it was very tasty". I will add that the service was...just ok. I'm no French onion soup connoisseur, so I didn't have any kind of expectation in my mind when I came here. It was a cold, rainy day, and I'd walked six kilometers before arriving here. I didn't come into the experience planning on the soup, but it seemed fitting, given the weather, and it came highly recommended by others. Let me tell you: It hit the spot. The broth was flavorful, the bread not too soggy, the onions delicious, and the cheese gooey. It's hard to believe it was vegan. I enjoyed my soup with a beer, and I finished with the crème brûlée, which had a perfect carmalized shell. Sooooo good. Finding quality vegetarian French cuisine in Paris was so much harder than I expected. I definitely ate more Italian food during my week in Paris than French. We did push through the language barrier and reservation issues to finally get a table here. We were not disappointed! We found this place on the net prior to our trip. Great reviews but sparse updates since Yelp is still not widespread in France. Details changed, location moved, but we tracked it down. A quaint and unassuming restaurant, we later learned is a fave among the locals. The bourguignon seitan was exactly what I wanted! The soup of the day, fresh homemade pea, was decadent. My sister and I arrived around 7:45 on a Thursday without a reservation. There was an open table outside but we were told it was reserved, so after some thought by the hostess we were seated in the back of the restaurant at the "bar"... which I would avoid if possible. It's hot and stuffy, plus loud, not to mention you stare right at the wall. Unless you turn your body sideways, which is what we did. The hostess/waitress who sat us was aloof bordering on rude. Thankfully our waiter was very friendly and kind! For food we both ordered one of the specials, a vegetable curry of sorts with cashews. We chose the potato option... I believe quinoa or rice were the other choices. The curry was pretty tasty, especially the potato "gratin" square they served on top. The curry included carrots, broccoli, cauliflower, among a couple other veggies, if I'm remembering correctly. My house glass of white wine paired well enough. The price was a little steep $17-18 given the type of ingredients (affordable produce) and mediocre ambiance. I do appreciate 100% plant-based establishments though! I'd say it's worth dining here if you make a reservation and are craving "heavier" vegan food. I was super hyped to visit this establishment after hearing multiple blog/happy cow reviews as well as a personal recommendation. Hence, I made reservations to visit here for dinner on my first night in Paris. But upon arrival, my husband and I were shocked to discover how hot it was inside. We were left in our seats in unbearable heat, and when I finally got a hold of an employee to place an order, I got called out at passive aggressively by (who seemed to be) the owner who yelled "you only place the order through me, thank you for waiting" across the hall. Knowing that the heat and their service thus far have been less than ideal, and that we would no longer be able to enjoy the food to our fullest, we decided to pick out some menus to share instead of getting their recommended course menu. I got their old hot chocolate, onion soup, blanquette, and creme brulee, all of which I was curious how they would "veganize" them. The hot chocolate was super foamy but not as creamy, chocolate-y, or sweet as I wanted. The onion soup was wonderful, and I only wish that I didn't have to enjoy it in such heat. The "meat" from the blanquette tasted unbelievably like chicken, but I detected an odd smell from the rice. Lastly, the creme brulee tasted the most "vegan" of all, lacking the creamy flavor and texture of typical non-vegan creme brulee. My boyfriend and I had found this restaurant listed in must-go-to vegan restaurants in Paris. So, naturally we had dinner there one night close to the end of our trip. We did not have a dinner reservation - and I recommend you try to get one to avoid being turned away - but chatted with the english-speaking waiter/server at opening and he was able to graciously give us a 90-minute time slot at one of the tables. That was plenty of time for us to eat! There was one other patron who was waiting at the door before opening, presumably doing the same thing as us - or she had a reservation for right at opening. The restaurant itself is quite cozy. Service is BEYOND. Food is even better. My boyfriend enjoyed french onion soup and Bourguignon de seitan (Seitan stew with red wine and mushrooms). I enjoyed the Poêlée de légumes au tofu fumé (Fried vegetable with smoked tofu). This is some of the best vegan food we've EVER had!! I would recommend all vegans in Paris and those traveling through to take the time to make a reservation and try it for yourselves. read more

I was so excited to find this restaurant online before heading to Paris. We walked here after visiting the louvre and it took about 30 minutes. It's a cute little place with tight seating. Hubby ordered the chickpea balls with side veggies and quinoa and I ordered the gluten free crepes with mushroom leek fondue filling. Sadly the meal was mediocre. Not a lot of flavour but the portions were huge. We probably should have ordered different items as the menu was quite extensive. My side salad took up half my plate. Hubby goes along whenever I search a vegan place so I pray it is good food for both of us. We were both somewhat disappointed. I had one of the best meals of my life at Le Potager du Marais. I was eating alone, and I was treated like a queen. I received impeccable service, despite my stumbling French. I sat there for two hours, and had the most delicious feast, ordering the French bistro specialities I otherwise couldn't have elsewhere. To start, the french onion soup. I was so excited to have french onion soup in France, and it did not disappoint! Oh wow, it was as delicious as I remembered the non-vegan version being. The cheese on top was perfect, I'm guessing it's Vegusto based on it's shape. Then I had seitan bourguignon. I've made this a few times myself, but never have I had a bourguignon this delicious. It was served with a potato gratin, absolutely inspired. The seitan was perfectly meaty, not overly chewy, and the entire dish was seasoned so well. I had thought I might not be able to finish when it was first set in front of me, but I ended up cleaning my plate! Lastly, the crème brûlée. This is the only dish that didn't wow me, as the custard was too grainy. The flavor was lovely though, and for a minute, I was able to pretend I was Amélie and crack the crème brûlée with a teaspoon. For that alone, it was worth it. I wouldn't hesitate to return, with a companion or by myself. I made a reservation a few weeks in advance, and I suggest you do the same. I saw many people being turned away. They took my reservation over email, so it was very simple. If you're a traveling vegan in search of some classic French bistro food, I can't recommend Le Potager du Marais enough. read more

My omnivore husband happily indulges my need to visit vegetarian restaurants when we travel. There's even a vegan restaurant at home that he will visit on his own. Unfortunately, after going to this restaurant, my husband refused to go to any more veggie restaurants during our Paris trip. The service was fine, and they had a few reasonably priced glasses of wine. Those were the highlights. None of the food was good. I thought the seitan bourginon would be amazing, but the texture of the seitan was awful. Also, the dish was served almost cold. My husband's "burger" was just a patty of some sort. One of the best vegan restaurants in Paris! My bf and I stumbled upon this restaurant by happenstance, after visiting the Pompidou. We were lucky enough to be seated right away at one of the few tables at the outside seating , despite having a full house. I would highly recommend making reservations if you plan to visit on a weekend. The server was very nice, and attentive despite being the only staff working the floor. He and the FOH/Manager both spoke English, they assured us everything was vegan. #yassss On to the food.....We had the most delicious mushroom paté, a very light spread, with pickled veggies. I ordered the lupine bean roast, and my so had the beef bourguignon made with seitan. Both were equally delicious but I was sold on the stewed seitan, they definitely know their way around gluten. Although the green beans sauteed in red tomato sauce, which accompanied the roast, was to die for. For the piêce de resistance, we ended our meal with the best creme brulée I've ever had. Better than what I remembered it to be. NOTE: you don't often come across a veganized version of this dish, so don't hesitate to give it a try. This restaurant is a perfect place to come for a nice vegan dinner. It is a bit pricey but worth it. It is also very packed so make sure to call in advanced to make reservations. I had the Bourguignon de seitan with potatoes and Poêlée de légumes au tofu fumé with Quinoa. Wonderful vegan restaurant that replicates classic French comfort food in vegan form! We had the delicious French onion soup (a must try... where else can you get this vegan?!). My husband had the lasagna (very good, delicate flavor, accompanied by fresh veggies) and I had the seitan bourguignon which was very well done and tasty! We shared the chocolate cake for dessert which was very good especially for a vegan dessert. The service can be a bit slow but very gracious and attentive so we didn't mind at all. There seems to be a paucity of vegan places in Paris. This one had good reviews and we decided to check it out. We tried to go on a Friday night, but they were booked. We did make reservations for Saturday night. We had a table outside which was great. The inside tables looked to be right on top of each other. We started with the Onion soup which is not called French Onion soup in France. This just does not work with Vegan cheese. It was bland and rather flavorless. Not worth it. I had the rolled lupine bean loaf which was equally bland. The mashed potatoes were more chunks. The tomato was good. Also the ratatouille had good flavor. This was a very average vegan meal at a very inflated cost. Service was good and the waiter was fluent. No issues here. By American standards, this was very average vegan food. A good start for Paris, but I think they have a way to go on the vegan cooking. Tip: Unless you like dining with your neighbor, get a table outside. read more

Prior to our trip to Europe, I researched veg-friendly restaurants for each city we were going to visit. Le Potager du Marais was at the top of my list for a nice dinner out in Paris - so I was thrilled when I emailed them and they said they could accommodate our reservation with a day's notice. I ordered the mushroom pate for an appetizer and the seitan bourguignon for a main. The pate was baked and sliced - far more bread-like than I was expecting. It almost reminded me of a lentil loaf we make at home. Next up - the bourguignon, while the sauce was truly delicious - the seitan was very hard and dense (difficult to cut with my knife) and the dish served to me luke-warm. Being a fairly adept vegan cook, I was a bit disappointed. That said, the staff is wonderful and I enjoyed their enthusiasm! read more

I enjoyed for a starter the "mushroom pate" that was so very delicious and moist. Think of a flavorful sage Thanksgiving stuffing. That's what each bite was tasting like. My main dish was the "seitan bourguignon" with your choice of rice or garlic mash, I had the mashed potatoes. It was a tasty Sage like sauce, and the Seitan resembled pieces of beef actually. They were very "tender" and moist, which is a first for me, because I've never had seitan taste so good in the United States. It's usually dry and chewy out here. For dessert I ordered the carrot cake with raspberry sauce, and it was good - not over-the-top - but good. The coffee has been great everywhere I've gone so you can go wrong with that either. This is my favorite place to eat in Paris! The French onion soup was to die for, and the vegan cheese they use is amazing - it tastes so real! The food was so good, I forgot to take a photo of my dessert! The crème brûlée was so creamy and delicious with the most delicate, crispy, burnt sugar layer. I hate to only give three stars, because the owner/staff here was SO nice. Seriously, I would absolutely go back for the kindness shown. However, I was very disappointed in the food. I was most excited about the french onion soup, and it was the best item we had. It was a bit too much tarragon for me and not quite rich enough, but still very nice. I loved the bread on top-- the seeds made for a nice touch. It was also a good sized portion. The other items were all fair, and the least impressive of all the vegan restaurants we visited in Paris. The potato with black olive pesto was really not good. I LOVE olives, but the tapenade was so salty that I couldn't eat it. My husband likes salty and loves tapenade, but he also couldn't eat it. It ended up just being a baked potato. The bourguignon was decent, but it missed something. It was no better than one I could get as a frozen meal. It could have used a little zest or more wine-- just something. It wasn't bad, just not as good as we'd hoped. The atmosphere was cozy and the addition of nutritional yeast and sesame salt at the tables was great. However, I have to mark it down because we just didn't enjoy the meal. I would definitely come back, because I hope it was just an off night. They were so welcoming that I wouldn't hesitate to give them a try. The place was packed when we arrived but fortunately a table became empty after waiting a few minutes, so it's recommended to make a reservation. At first, after we were rudely (or so it seemed) greeted by the waiter, I wanted to turn around and request an Uber to another spot. My girlfriend talked me out of it (it didn't help that I was super hungry, lol). As it turned out, our waiter came to take our drink order, and was actually very pleasant (seems like I caught him in a bad moment - no sweat!). If I lived here, I would go again and again. But since we are only here for a little time and so many other restaurants to try, it would only be this once. I had the onion soup. It was delicious. It Had large perfectly cooked onions, crunchy toasted bread chucks & was perfectly seasoned with herbs. The "cheese" on top was so good and nutty. I'm not quite sure what it's main ingredient is. Eggplant, which was perfectly cooked, had the same yummy cheese that was in my soup. The orange and green sauce was a wonderful combination of deliciousness. I chose the nutty brown rice as my side. Again, what a surprise. So simple, but oh so good. Overall, an outstanding dish!!! The rest of our party enjoyed their meals as much as I did. I gave this restaurant a 5 star because from service to quality of it's food it was superb!!! If you dine al fresco, you will get the bonus of the best people watching in Paris. Visiting France for the past 5 days we have had nothing but great experiences. Being vegan for the past 1.5 years we love and appreciate all vegan friendly restaurants. We made a reservation with Le Potager and we're told on the phone that we had a time frame reserved of 730-9pm. We arrived at 7:50pm to the Restaurant and we're told to leave that we could not be seated. The guy turned us away and told us we could not sit. WE MADE A RESERVATION for 7:30-9PM!!! Not to mention there were 2 open tables there until 9pm!!! Maybe discrimination towards us? Not sure. Terrible service and people here. Not acceptable. Will never come back here nor reccomend. read more
