3.5 stars: Discovered this food truck as we were wandering around Dorchester Square (they rotate…read moretheir location daily according to guy taking our order). Out of the 3 trucks parked in the area, this one had a huge line of people swarming so naturally that attracted us to it, to discover that everyone was jumping all over this for their grilled cheese. Classic Grilled Cheese - You can't mess up a grilled cheese, and these guys did not. I was just hoping that it had some special cheese/bread/element to it, but overall it's just a straightforward grilled cheese. The tater tots seem to be something special here that everyone wants to get their hands on. Unfortunately they just ran out at around the 1:00pm when we stepped up to order. I'll be left wondering what was so good since everyone had a look of despair once they realized there was none left. FRIED CHEESECAKE - Probably the savior of our meal. Battered and topped with a strawberry jam based sauce. They also offer Mac and Cheese too sold by the pound in small/med/large takeout style containers.

While we were sitting down and enjoying grilled cheese sandwich which I found not too greasy and a good portion. There was a take out order happening for a party. Great idea! And the Mac and cheese bowls are perfect. Also tried the tater tots.. Wow fantastic.. The potatoes and mashed with just enough cheese, fried to perfection. Don't pop the first one in you mouth! You might not burn yourself and not enjoy the rest :)

Taverne restaurent review…read more This was a recommendation by many as one of the best restaurants in the area. I can't say that I would agree from this visit. First the good things. The staff was excellent, friendly and attentive for most of the night. The owner who we spoke with after the meal was for the most part respectful and receptive to our comments. As for the food itself, we didn't venture too much into any of the specials and some of the dishes with unusual food combinations. I'm no foodie, so my palate would not be able to discern how well those dishes work with the ingredients. As it turned out, we were "put to the test" with our first choice. We decided to split two courses, going with the BRASSICAS "CAESAR" to start. I guess this is the chef's "take" on a Caesar salad. Can't say that it was the best combination of ingredients and was a bit bland considering the seasoning. Certainly not what we expected when the salad is described as a Caesar. I'm not a spice person, but it was a little surprising the waitress or another staff member didn't offer some pepper without us asking for it. They are usually quick to offer that in most places after you taste the food. Getting a half order of the HOUSE FOCACCIA certainly helped, but it isn't the best thing to say when the bread is the highlight of the meal. We both thought they should make a half order a staple for most items on the menu without charge. Our other course was the CAVATELLI POMODORO. Can't say there was anything extraordinary about the sauce and pepper again had to be requested. The pasta was fine but, like the salad, it was a smallish portion. This dish did come hot to the table and stayed that way, which is a positive. Overall, both portions were a bit small and both were underwhelming for the price charged. The worst aspect of the evening was the ambient sound of the room itself. The wooden bar, table to ceiling blackboard, windows and bare floor all contribute to amplifying everyone's conversation, making the room extremely loud. It forces everyone to talk louder, which just makes it even louder inside, almost to the point of discomfort. Good to know that the owner is looking at some different options to mitigate this. I'm not sure who Taverne Monkland is trying to attract. Small portions, unusual food combinations, cost-driven ingredient replacements for traditional recipes, and high prices, plus a noisy atmosphere doesn't make for the best dining experience.

Restaurant AA - Mostly eaten mini Italian poutine

I was visiting the nearby Atwater market and couldn't resist stopping in for a pre-dinner snack…read moreafter having heard praise for its poutine. The space was completely empty around 6 PM -- this is a small, local greasy spoon that opens at 4 pm but really does most of its business in the late night/morning hours. The poutines are offered in five different sizes ranging from mini to familiale -- I got the mini ($8.50, tax included) and it was the perfect portion for one (particularly if pairing with another item), with just the right fries, sauce, and cheese curd ratios. This was actually my first time trying an Italian (bolognese) poutine and I loved it and may very well gravitate towards it again in the future. Traditional poutine gravies can be very hit or miss to me and often too salty, but I really enjoyed the acidity from the tomatoes and the rich, comforting flavors of the ground meat in the sauce. The fries were warm and tender, while the curds had both good flavor and texture. I'd asked for the sauce on the side because I meant to take this to the waterfront to enjoy, but stopped a few feet from the restaurant to sample at peak freshness, and ended up demolishing it there in the space of a couple of minutes (including every last drop of sauce). Cash only and not much to speak of in terms of service, but your order is prepared right in front of you and it was nice to watch the woman behind the counter carefully package my takeout order and layer the fried-to-order fries and curds. Essentially, this isn't the kind of gourmet poutine you'll see recommended on a bunch of travel blogs, but it is pure comfort food, and Restaurant AA delivers on all the aspects you'd want it to.

I don't know why I was expecting a small portion of salad, but it was actually a lot, way more than I could finish. There was also a generous amount of fries, and I loved how soft the burger was. The meat was tender, the bacon was soft, and there was a good amount of veggies and a decent amount of sauce. Everything paired really well together. I find it's a great value for a trio, it keeps you full for several hours. I also got the apple caramel cheesecake. It's not a huge portion, but then again, it's cheesecake, so it's naturally rich. That said, this one felt a bit lighter than usual, so you don't get that overly heavy feeling after a slice. I do wish the crust had been a bit firmer, as it was very soft. Overall, I was quite satisfied with my meal and would definitely order it again in the future.

But before even checking in, we had to walk through Bar George ~ and instantly knew we wanted to eat there. We were lucky enough to grab a last-minute reservation, and Julien took a good care of us throughout the evening. His recommendation of the Beef Wellington was spot on (it's already one of our favorite dishes), but this was hands down the best we've ever had. I ordered the lobster risotto, which was excellent with just the right amount of spice. My son had the 10 oz striploin steak with homemade fries (chips), and it was absolutely delicious. I also loved the Canadian touch of coarse salt on the steak, plus the option to choose between Béarnaise or peppercorn sauce. Julien also mentioned their pastry chef placed second in a NY competition, and the desserts absolutely lived up to that reputation. We tried the pineapple and coconut pavlova and the "lick me hazelnut" ~ both beautifully presented and incredibly delicious. We also ordered iced coffee and a latte, and noticed something interesting: this was the second place where we found Canadian coffee to be smooth and mild ~ such a nice change from the often bitter, over-roasted American coffee. Yes, dinner was a bit steep ($300+), but it was worth every penny. Between the rich history, stunning design, outstanding service, and unique cuisine, I would highly recommend Bar George. I would absolutely love to come back!!
