Today, Le Chef Mediterranean catered a birthday lunch at a private residence in Upland. My family and friends have dined in the restaurant itself on several occasions, but this was the first time we'd experienced Chef Adel's offerings in a different setting. Much to our delight, Chef Adel outdid himself both in the preparation of the dishes and in the presentation of each of the offerings. He arrived himself with the food--not in styrofoam takeout containers, but each beautifully arranged and elegantly displayed on china and glass dishes. My bride and I have been on a bit of a Mediterranean kick lately. We revered the amazing food at Eden Garden in Pasadena for my milestone 50th birthday party (2/2020) then recently revisited our neighborhood Jasmine Grill. So why not give Le Chef, Upland's well reviewed ode to Lebanese cuisine, a go?? As you'll soon discover, today's meal was a study in exasperating variances. Sky high one moment, skulking in the depths the next! Restaurant owners & staff: As in interviews and in dating, you never get a second chance to make that first impression! We arrived and found both the maitre'd and our waiter were not wearing any masks. Yuck. Only our fierce appetites and growling stomachs kept us riveted to our seats. My wife ordered grilled chicken, which was served w/ Basmati rice. I chose the mixed grill combo, featuring a trio of grilled chicken, beef kafta (ground beef) and steak served with the obligatory Basmati rice. The starters we ordered both dazzled! The mahoumara was our single 5 star item of the night! Crunchy pulverized walnuts meshed with minced red peppers & spices? Get outtve town!! Our taste buds were boogieing to the tune of Taste of Honey's 1979 disco smash "Boogie Oogie Oogie!" The labne was super fresh, creamy and sparkled w/ a kiss of mint. However, the waiter plunked down a STORE BOUGHT plastic baggy wrapped 2pk of stale pita bread! ‍ Talk about major nails on the chalkboard scratch moment!! All of a sudden our 5 star appetizers got rear ended into a pile of culinary misery! Who wants to dip their decadent Mahoumara or Labne onto day old, overly Crunchy, room temperature pita bread!??! And, for the love of God, why wouldja skimp on the bread & bring 2 lousy pieces of pita bread to sop up not one but two appetizer's worth of dips??! NOT "Le Waiter's" finest moment! Our entrees were....satisfactory. Both entrees arrived with at least half the plate overflowing with the Basmati rice, which in of itself wouldn't be a problem IF the rice was fresh. But when the rice is lukewarm and has a distinct back of the mouth "after taste" of two day old chicken broth (probably used in lieu of water to steam the rice) then it's shakier than the Matt Gaetz for Pope candidacy!! The portion sizes on the grilled meat also had me growling. $18 for a pound of underwhelming rice and, count 'em, nine cutlets of meat seems a lil pricey, no??! The taste test? The taste of the entrees was alright. Not up to the standard of Eden Garden or Jasmine but decent. With some better management of its mask resistant staff and upgrading the caliber of both its Basmati rice and the quantity of their proteins, Le Chef can easily vault up to a 4-plus star meal. 2 But on this day (SAT, 4/10) and with this meal, the only thing that girded them from a lousy 2 star rating was its exceptional Mahoumara!! read more

Passed by this spot several times but never tried it. Looked at the menu and everything looked great. Opted for the falafel plate which comes with 6 falafels, hummus and salad. The falafel and hummus was very delicious... both had good flavor and the texture was spot on. The lettuce in the salad however tasted a little stale and the dressing seemed off from typical Greek salads. And so for dessert, I got the baklava. Sooo excited because I always grab this treat whenever I run into a place who has em. I was terribly disappointed. It does not have the same flavor as other baklava im used to. Tastes kind of like it was soaked in roses. Doesn't make sense right? But that is the best way to describe the after taste. I was only able to eat 2 bites n gave up. I would typically come back for the falafel and hummus alone, but when I came to pick up my food none of the workers wore masks. They ran the cash register without masks, handed me my food without masks,, seated people to outdoor dining without masks and spoke with incoming customers without masks... and sometime that would be ok if people were socially distanced, but the 2 workers I saw worked right alongside each other. Since then, I have been back two more times, and have continued to be impressed. This last time was earlier this week, when I stopped by for lunch with my mother. We brought my doggie, hoping to eat there, but when we got there, we realized we might be too cold sitting out. We debated whether to be cold for a little and eat there, or just order to go. One of the owners saw our dilemma and told us to just eat there. I really did not have a problem taking the food home, but am beyond appreciative that he made every effort possible to ensure that we were comfortable and could still dine there with my little doggie. Came here to Le Chef for the first time to celebrate my birthday with my wife and another couple. We had a great time and were not completely disappointed, although there could be some improvements as noted below! If I could rate 4-1/4 stars, I think that's what I would give it . . . I could have downgraded to 4, because 5-stars is a bit of a stretch -- at least on this occasion. But I'd rather not do that for a first review in these economic times -- their menu and prices seem to be stable and the quality of everything we had was excellent. My wife and I arrived just after 6pm and were seated immediately and left with menus. The other couple was delayed by traffic about 20 minutes, and we were sort of left unattended for the first 15 minutes even though the restaurant was not busy at all. But this was made up for once they realized the error. From that point, and throughout the time we were there, we were dutifully waited on. Water refills happened without having to ask. From time of order to delivery of our meal was mere minutes -- faster even than some fast food drive-thrus. We started with four pieces of spinach fatayer -- a flaky pastry dough triangle filled with lemony chopped spinach. They're obviously hand-made and pre-baked ahead of time then kept refrigerated, and baked again briefly to reheat. That's understandable and not a problem. Unfortunately, the one my wife had was still somewhat cold inside. Mine was nice and hot. The four of us each had the combo mixed grill with rice. My wife and I split a fatoush salad in order to have and share both baba ghannouj and hummus as our second sides. Our friends both had side salads with their rice. Comparing menu photos, the mixed grill seems to be about half portions of the three meats compared to what you would get ordering a single-meat entree -- four pieces each of chicken and tenderloin compared to seven, and one kafta compared to two. The rice was excellent! The fatoush salad was very fresh and the vinaigrette dressing was full of flavor with the right balance of olive oil. The baba ghannouj was also creamy and had the familiar smoky flavor as it should. The hummus was also tasty. The only thing I thought was missing was a shaker of sumac -- but I didn't ask if they had one either. Many middle eastern restaurants put one on the table like you might see parmesan cheese in an Italian restaurant. The grilled meats were also pretty amazing! Chicken was moist, tender, and very flavorful, and the tenderloin as well. The kafta was exceptionally tasty and I really liked the crispy exterior, however, the one kabob was considerably smaller than I am used to getting in other middle eastern restaurants -- it was less than an inch in diameter and about six inches long. Kafta is definitely one of my favorites, and this was more than just a little bit of a disappointment. I don't think I would order the kafta entree unless it came with four of these kabobs instead of two -- just not enough there to be filling. We ordered four baklava for dessert, which were delicate and tasty, but, like the kafta, were disappointingly small. Still, at 2 for $5.50, they weren't really overpriced. They do indicate on the menu that all orders of $100 or more will automatically be assessed an 18% gratuity. The same applies to groups of 6 or more. This seems a little cheeky, but it's a growing trend in some places. Our bill was over $100 and they added the 18% . . . we did not add more to that We'll definitely return in the future because this was a nice "find" thanks to other Yelp! reviews. read more

Dinner at Le Chef last night. So good! Second time there & we brought the whole family and more. Everything was delicious and we'll be back soon. I haven't eaten al all the Mediterranean restaurants in Upland, but many, and this is now our favorite. They do all the basics fare VERY well, like kabobs, babagannouj (exceptional here), hummus, grape leaves, falafel (light and crispy and awesome), etc. They really impress with their less regular items. We tried their Spinach Fatayer (little dough pockets filled with spinach, onion & pine nuts) which were to die for! The Mauhamara (red pepper paste and walnut dip) is exceptional and my family's favorite menu item. I love how every main plate here is customized with your choice of 2 sides. As you can see by the photos, there is a plate for everyone. Our service was outstanding & we met the owner who was pleased to meet us and excited to tell us about plans for his bar expansion.
