Went here for Valentine's day with a friend of mine. We ordered a small plate to share which was the cheese selection and the bread was too hard to chew so we asked for a different bread and they brought out sandwich bread. Then the drinks took forever to receive that my friend got up to get herself water. When the main plates arrived the seafood was decent but very small portions within two hours I was hungry again. My child would eat that size portion. I really was hoping for better but I was let down. One thing I really enjoyed was the live music.

Wow. Extremely delicious and great cooking. The staff is not just original France but very alert, kind and charming. Next to all this,- be sure to enjoy some of the great French wines. Very very recommendable

Went here for the eggs benni and I got given this, if I can remember eggs need to be runny and not hard, I showed one of the staff and they told me that's how the chief had wanted it and then went on to say we're sorry do you what a scone? I got asked to pay first even tho I have never had to pay first and any other restraint then a fast food place ? But somehow I was okay with this knowing from what I've heard that they do excellent eggs benni, I was wrong . this is why you pay after !!!

We are truly spoilt for choice when it comes to dining out in Auckland, in particular the CBD. But I suppose there is one cuisine which is lacking - French. Thanks to Le Chef, that void has now been filled! At Le Chef, they are all about using fresh and seasonal produce and you can sample their delicious food for breakfast, lunch and dinner! I dined at Le Chef this week for a foodie meetup which was fantastique! We were there to sample dishes from Le Chef's dinner menu, as well as a few preview dishes from their upcoming Friday event, La Longue Table Du Chef*. Translating to 'The Chef's Long Table', 120 people will dine together at one big outdoor table, devouring three courses of French food and drinking French wine - to me that sounds like a fabulous night! We all started with a glass of Verve du Vernay - a light French sparkling wine, while the owner, Édouard Le Goff, told us briefly about Le Chef - they opened their first restaurant on Victoria Street about a year ago, but after a space became available on Vulcan Lane, they seized the opportunity. Édouard says Vulcan Lane definitely gets more foot traffic and from my experience, the atmosphere is always buzzing, whether it is during the day or at night. They have only been open for six months, but no doubt they will continue to do well! We were then introduced to the Head Chef, Grant Kitchen, who has had experience working in restaurants all over New Zealand and last November, he joined the Le Chef team. An amazing array of dishes subsequently followed... - 'Champignons a l'ail' - Garlic mushrooms with truffle creme, pomme de terre (potato) and confit tomatoes - 'Saumon' - Lightly cured salmon with caviar, edamame beans, lime and risotto puree - 'Tartare de boeuf' - Beef tartare with mustard, truffle oil and charred egg yolk - 'Le cerf forestier' - Venison with black forest mushrooms, crispy potato cakes, roasted carrots and... wait for it... a chocolate jus! - 'Boeuf nervure court' - Beef short rib served with petit vegetables, truffled mushrooms, roasted tomatoes, perfectly cooked potatoes and a jus that could of well of been a drink! - Last but not least, 'Le Poulet supreme' - Chicken filled with ratatouille, wrapped in bacon, then covered in pastry, and accompanied by a gooey Camembert croquette - ooh la la! All the dishes were well presented and smelt heavenly, in particular the venison - my clear favourite of the night and cooked to perfection. Another great dish was the beef short rib, which fell off the bone and I loved its side accompaniments (in particular the roasted tomatoes and potatoes). The salmon was poached perfectly and despite the many elements on the plate, it came together well. I wasn't too fussed about the steak tartare, however the chicken supreme was a surprise! Cutting through a layer of pastry, then bacon, then chicken with ratatouille reminded me of the young days playing pass the parcel - full of fun and excitement about who would get the last present. The Camembert croquette was the icing on the cake - gooey, cheesy goodness. We then devoured two of their desserts. First up was the classic French dessert of Crème Brûlée, which was set perfectly. It was not too sweet, but still satisfying nonetheless. But the best part was when Édouard torched the caramel topping at our table! With a side of candied orange and fruity biscotti, it was the perfect end to our lovely meal. The second dessert was something I was not expecting - Panacotta. Although it is not a typical French dessert, we still all thoroughly enjoyed Le Chef's coconut panacotta with mango sorbet. I loved the idea of serving the panacotta in small jars - it made eating fun! *The La Longue Table Du Chef event is sadly sold out... but Édouard mentioned that if the event goes well this Friday night, then they will hold another one in two months' time. Here's hoping, because the food, service and atmosphere at Le Chef is très bon!

Small and cozy cafe away from the busy Queen Street. Friendly servers; enjoyed the French baguette; salmon, cream lemon dijon with fries.

There is a large cheese room with glass viewing area in the main dining area which adds to the ambience. There is plenty of seating to enjoy the limited menu - everything we tasted was delicious. The place was almost full when we arrived and totally full by the time we were served. We had pretty decent coffees with palmiers which were super crispy and perfectly sweet. We actually went back for more. The cheese and ham croissant was flakey, warm with gooey Camembert and a generous amount of ham. I had the braised ox tail on custard which is served with a few slices of fresh baguette. The braised ox was gelatinous and salty, the custard smooth and creamy set into the serving bowl, on top were pickled mushrooms adding a much welcome tangy refreshing way to cut through all the other richness. I'm not usually a fan of micro greens, but these were pretty tasty fresh and added texture. DELICIOUS! I only wish the serve was larger. Will definitely return because I saw many tasty looking soups being served and want to try more.

Being lunch time, I knew we would have no problem walking in without a booking, and I was seated with my friends at a nice long table at the front corner in front of the bar. Our menu's were handed out promptly as we entered and our drink orders taken also a few minutes after being seated. The lunch menu, I found had a little bit of everything French and provided you with savory and sweet crepes, entree soups, snails, cheese or meat sample boards, pate and bread, sandwiches, and delicious French salads. All at a very reasonable price may I add. I decided on a French onion soup, and a sweet crepe with toasted coconut and chocolate sauce. My soup was perfection, as I would expect no less in a French restaurant, and my crepe, was soft, and delicate, and laced with pure sweet sensation. I love the decor, its French and arty, and you truly feel as though you could be seated somewhere in Paris. Great service, and scrumptious food, I will be definitely be back here again. We almost didn't have dessert until we spied "le café gourmand" - a trio of mini desserts - crème brulee, chocolate mousse and a crepe plus an espresso and two spoons! Superb and very reasonably priced at $10.50. In fact the prices overall are very reasonable. Just over $100 for the two of us. Neither of us had been to Antoine's but have both heard lots about owner and chef Tony Astle. (who happened to be working the kitchen that night) The reservation went smooth, until they called back to confirm the afternoon we were due to dine. I missed the call but called the number back guessing what/who called I got a really confused staff member on the other end of the line who barely spoke intelligible English who was sure I wanted to book a table of six (when I was calling back to confirm my booking for a table of two) We arrived still laughing at the strange phone call, and stood at the steps after knocking on the door (??? yeah we wtf'd) ushered in to the little waiting room (??? again wtf) we peeled our coats off to have them stored away and shown to our (very small) table covered in white linen... in a bookish dining room that felt rather grandmotherly... the ambiance was hushed whispers and "don't touch anything, and sit up with your back straight"... The kind of fancy pants pompatry that I feared as a kid. The food... it wasn't outstanding certainly not what you'd expect for $$$$$... with all the great food and dining that's out there in Auckland today... my salmon gazpacho sort of looked at its feet shoved its hands in its pockets shrugged and heaved an apologetic sigh. The duck l'orange was boring and coyly sweet and a little dry... The oxtail was pretty bold and flavorful and wonderfully aromatic, fall off the bone delicious but it wasn't enough to redeem the rest of the experience. The dessert was pleasant at best. The wait staff was servile and theatrically trite... and didn't know when asked simple questions regarding the dishes... but knowledge about the wine was pretty good once you get past the thick accents. The strangest moment of all was at the end of the night going to pay... this place doesn't take eftpos, and the credit card went through an old zip zap (kids do you even know what this is???) and you're handed a hand filled receipt. It completed our time warp and we headed back through the doors to a world post Robert Muldoon and Margaret Thatcher. Pockets $445 (inc 120 for wine) lighter hardly feeling like we got our moneys worth... perhaps that is the cost for time travel.

A raspberry chocolate croissant, a chocolate brioche, and a canele topped my plate. The canele was my highlight, crispy and sweet on the outside and gooey on the inside. The brioche was freshly warm and soft but not too rich. The croissant was on the verge, somewhat stale around the edges but still enjoyable. The ups: these pastries and the olive bread were delicious. Prices are very reasonable too, only $10 all up for the three sweets. La Voie Francaise also boasts an inviting atmosphere that's relaxing but well kempt. The downs: I'm not convinced by these tastings that La Voie is all the rage, but that's probably just because I've been spoiled by the French market in Parnell. I'll be back for a croque monsieur at some stage, maybe my mind will change.
