Went for a birthday dinner for a group of 5. Overall we had a good experience: We had a rose (also tip: Sunday's you can bring your own bottle of wine and there's no uncorking fee!) We split the mussel entree: sauce was good. Bread was also served as an appetizer (only one slice). We had to ask for a second slice for the sauce. Really good though! Fries were very crispy, which I like and they were not greasy. We all ordered diff dishes and it was really good! Only slight downside: - it was kind of slightly saltier than I like it to be. Ate there one time last summer and was a pleasant experience. Went there again today expecting the same but the owner was apparently there this time. Called to let them know we were coming and no reservations required for us to "just walk in". We arrive about 10 minutes before 2PM only to be told by the owner they were closed when I asked if they could bring out the disable access ramp so my wife could get in like last time. What I asked that, I got a stern look and was told: "we are closed". Very unprofessional and would NOT recommend this venue for any disabled person. Beware. This is sweet and small French restaurant in Tenleytown, DC. It's close to the metro. This place is good for a weekend brunch. It doesn't have a bar but nicely decorated with the French music playing background. The service was polite and friendly. The features food was tasty. My friend and I had the potato and bacon soup and salad for appetizer. Mozzarella cheese with chive omelets and plat du jour (roasted cod fish, herb quinoa, snow peas, lemon caper pink peppercorn) for entree. Nutella crepe for desert. I went here a few weeks ago to use the TravelZoo voucher for brunch (3 courses for 2 people plus a bottle of champagne and OJ). The food was really delicious, starting with the tomato soup of the day and the pate appetizer with warm bread and butter on the side (perfect for dipping in the soup). I was pretty full after the appetizers, but the entrees came out fairly quickly which was nice. I got the salmon benedict which was pretty standard, no complaints here. Dessert was the nutella crepe and strawberry ice cream for my fiance, both of which were the perfect amount of sweet after a big meal. The atmosphere is mostly an older crowd. My fiance and I are in our mid-20s and everyone else in there looked to be at least 60. We were seated away from the main crowd which was fine with us, we didn't want to disturb anyone on accident after a bottle of champagne. read more

The owner of the restaurant ruins the mood, and upcharged us for using a gift certificate after our waiter assured they would be accepted. He wrenched the check from the waiter's hand, made him go find white-out, and you can see the expensive result on our check. See the proof with the attached picture. I really enjoyed this restaurant. I came here on a date and never even heard of the location. A groupon deal brought us in and the food will bring me back. I enjoyed the ambiance of the restaurant, the outdoor seating was lovely. I had the bouillabaisse. The dish itself was very tasty! The only thing I thing the management should take into consideration is that 1 shrimp is not an appropriate amount for that dish. There should have been a few more. The seafood was cooked well. The one craw fish was a pleasant surprise. But sadly just gave me a taste of one of my favorite seafood items, left me wanting more. The bread was delicious and great to dip into the sauce. My date had a similar dish but it was slightly different and was a special for the day. He did bite into a few shells from the seafood but he did say he enjoyed the food! I came for Restaurant Week specifically because the menu listed on Le Chat Noir's website listed a dish I have been searching for in DC and was the only RW restaurant that had it (confit de canard). The menu in the restaurant was different and shorter than the menu that was on the website and did not include half the things that were listed online, including confit de canard. This was incredibly disappointing. When I asked about this discrepancy, I was informed the full menu that was on the website is only for the weekend, which was not listed anywhere online, neither on the website or the RW site. I find it very misleading to put a full prix fixe menu online and not serve that full menu in the restaurant - or at least list the times that menu is available online! I would not have come to Le Chat Noir if I had known I would not be able to get what was listed online. I ended up ordering a la carte escargots and le magret. The escargots were good, but the duck breast was slightly overcooked. The wine was good (half price bottles on Tuesday) and service was decent, but overall a disappointing experience. read more

This place deserves zero starts! I would love to rate the food, but we didn't get that far. What I am going to write is the most bizarre experience I ever had in a restaurant! We had reservations for 6 at 6:00pm. Five in the party showed up on time and our sixth person was 5 minutes away stuck in traffic. We were questioned several times before we were seated if the 6th person would be joining us. We reassured them he was on the way and his uber was in traffic just a few blocks away. Begrudgingly the maître d' sat us just about the time our final guest arrived. The waitress came over and set us up with menus, bread and water. When she came to take our order, we asked if separate checks would be possible. The answer was no because it would be too much writing. What? Don't you write down everyone's order? I think we got past that and we would take the bill and put money or credit cards on the check for what each individual ordered. Within a few minutes the maître d' returned to our table and said he could only process 4 credit cards because that was his limit. What? I never heard this before. He insisted he would only process 4 credit cards and if we needed cash he could direct us to an ATM. This maître d' was a total jerk! The chat noir is definitely a fine balance between cozy/quaint and classy/fine. With a great selection of galette style crepes, gourmet sandwiches, brunch menu and great appetizers it brings together some excellent flavors. He creeps are very filling and a little heavy because they are buckwheat galettes proportioned to be on the large side. But all the rich flavors make up for that. I wrote this review on another restaurant by mistake I guess that's how upset I was... This message is for "le chat noir" restaurant! I went there on Valentine's Day with my husband hoping to have a nice intimate dinner. Not only we had to wait a while to get sited (even after a reservation) but there was no place to stand therefore we were being bumped on all over... once we finally sat down, the service was horrible, my husband steak and frite was dry and over cooked, my server never checked on us and once she saw the food being returned, it did not occur to her to come check on us... lastly we tried to cancel the desert due to the long wait but we were told it was on its way... so we asked for it to be Togo... they brought back my crepes flopped and nasty with no whipped cream nor strawberry.... the only good thing there was the escargots!!!! The ambience was cheerful, sunny (lots of windows), clean (white tablecloths), & smelled great! We ordered the seafood crepe to start with while perusing the menu -- the filling was delicious, the crepe light & delicate. My friend had the quiche, which was burned on the top, but her side salad was fresh & plentiful. She said it was pretty good, but not as good as Paul's downtown. This hidden gem in the Tenleytown Neighborhood is very cozy and intimate. We ordered a Shrimp dish and an Octopus salad for appetizer. They were both very tasty, shrimp was very flavorful and the octopus was very soft and cooked perfect. For our entrée, we tried the seafood bouillabaisse, which was also very tasty but the broth was a little too strong on the tomato. As a seafood bouillabaisse, I would have liked if the broth also had a little more seafood flavor. The dessert was our favorite, the daily special chestnut mousse. It was rich and creamy and tasted amazing! We would definitely be back to try some more dishes as their menu was full of seafood dishes and their extensive dessert menu! read more

My husband and I had a lovely, mellow date night at Le Chat Noir. When we came in, we did have a bit of a wait before anybody approached us and welcomed us in. However, when we were finally seated, our waiter was very attentive and kind. Service was leisurely, but that was fine with us as we took our time enjoying the atmosphere and the meal. They have a solid wine list as well as a handful of beers, and their dinner menu is quite extensive in selection. My husband ordered the sweetbreads as an appetizer and, while surprised by the croquette-style presentation, very much enjoyed the flavors. He also very much enjoyed his entree of moules frites. For my part, I enjoyed the eggplant caviar as an appetizer, which was beautifully presented inside a plum tomato with a cheese cracker garnish. The flavor of the eggplant caviar was subtle but smooth and enjoyable, and the cheese cracker gave the perfect punch of balance. As my main, I ordered the vegetarian crepe. I was delighted by how tasty and filling it was, with almost a ratatouille style flavor for the filling and a hearty taste for the crepe itself. Overall, Le Chat Noir is a lovely place for a relaxed bistro dinner. Next time we plan on checking out the even cuter bar upstairs, where they screen old B&W movies! read more

This was our first date night since moving to the area! Didn't know what to expect but we were very happily surprised. Small bistro, food was excellent ( I had the special fish) and my husband had lamb. Wine was very good as well. They have a wine bar upstairs but we didn't get to experience it since it was closed for a private function. Note to self- Next time book a table past 8 pm. Le chat is a great neighborhood restaurant! I come here often with my mom as she loves it!! It is a small restaurant and the service is very friendly. It is very popular on Sunday's because you can bring your own bottle of wine. Le chat has delicious crepes and I almost always get the salmon as my main because it is always delicious and they frequently change what comes with it. The desserts are also great! I have been here many times. Only once it was full hectic and you could feel it in the non-engaging, even dismissive attitude of server and owner. I guess it would be understandable considering the many times they have been pleasant, courteous and even able to recognize you! The food is, of course, excellent. What has happened to this once-enjoyable restaurant? It was never the caliber of 'La Chaumiere', but had a varied menu, friendly servers and is walking distance from home and office. I therefore overlooked two chronic problems--under-staffing and a clientele so elderly that I felt like a kid, and I'm in my 60's. Last month, I checked online to see if LCN was participating in restaurant week. What I found was distressing: a new website listing only 50% of the previous lunchtime entrees, 60% of the previous crepes, and the well-priced and popular prix-fixe weekend brunch had disappeared. Because the website is poorly done--dysfunctional drop-down menu and numerous misspellings (ex: 'chartucerie' should be 'charcuterie')--I took the time to email the cafe. 'Samuel' responded that everything appears on the website, and when I asked specifically about brunch, got no further response. If LCN has cut back this much, I'm no longer a customer, as there are better and much livelier choices in Bethesda and DuPont Circle. read more

Excellent. Tried this place out with the Groupon and still ended up with a huge bill because we wanted to try everything. Worth it. The only reason why it's not 5 stars: the escargot were not the best i've ever had (could have been more garlicky) and they didn't automatically provide bread for dipping. It was a muggy DC summer night, so it also very hot in the restaurant (and the dining room is small) which meant the dining experience was not as great as it could have been, but the service was phenomenal. The server gave me an excellent wine recommendation to pair with my meal and I really enjoyed the creamy goat cheese and the duck pate from our charcuterie plate. The seasonal salad was very refreshing and plated beautifully. My fiance got the shrimp with risotto and cremini mushrooms and everything was cooked perfectly, super tender and buttery. We waddled out of there very happily at the end of the night. I am definitely returning and trying the crepes next time. read more

Since this is out of the way, you would think it would be worth the trek but it isn't. The best I can say is that's it not bad but not really worth heading out of the way to go and eat at. The service was pretty abysmal-- I don't know if they took a page from actual French restaurants but having to flag down the server for water despite being one of two tables is definitely not the best start to a dining experience. It was further emboldened by the fact that the server looked downright bored when taking our orders. The food was pretty good. Very standard French fare without the bells and whistles. The wait stuff including the manager need to be trained or replaced!!! Beside one server Evan, who was extremely nice and professional. The whole story was over a table. French drama!!! I was there 3 days ago for lunch. The restaurant was half empty.. So, I picked a bigger table. The busboy and the server were having an intense argument in front of us about a table!!!! The busboy ended up calling the manager... And so, the manager walks by with that French attitude starring at us (by the way that was creepy and uncomfortable) after few trips back and forth.. he gave a speech to the server who gave us the table. I could literary hear the whole conversation since they were behind us. We were sited in that table for so long no one stopped by to take our order. Peu Accueillant So you don't speak French? The title of this review would usually be translated as "inhospitable," but I don't quite mean that. Literally, the real sense of "peu accueillant" would be better conveyed as "short on hospitality." Upon checking in, rather than accompanying me to my table and assuring that I was "bien installé," the proprietor merely gestured to a table in the far corner of the room. Short on hospitality indeed! According to Open Table, I've eaten at Le Chat Noir -- a lovely, quaint, family-owned bistro with a subspecialty in both sweet and savory crêpes -- at least 6 times in 2014 -- perhaps not enough to qualify as a regular, but at least, I think, enough to warrant a glimmer of recognition. That, alas, has yet to happen. As a retired teacher of French, part of the joy for me of eating in a French-owned bistro is total immersion involving not only "la cuisine" but also "la langue." This doesn't happen at Le Chat Noir. Questions asked in French are almost defiantly answered in English, effectively fencing me off from the experience I seek. Tonight, I dined alone. I was seated next to a noisy table of 10. The juvenile component of this group was seated at the end of the table nearest me. The loud talk and pat-a-cake games went unchecked by the adults at the table, one of whom spoke at a volume that would put Stentor to shame. My hopes for quiet evening catching up on my reading over a fine meal and a good wine were dashed. As usual I ordered the "Bijoux de Boeuf," and a half bottle of a very fine Bordeaux. The food, as usual, was sinful French comfort food at its best, but the experience overall was less than it could have been. Both the proprietor and his daughter were, as usual, curt and efficient -- dutiful rather than welcoming. I drove by this place tonight and remembered my last, and only time in this restaurant. If I knew about yelp earlier, I would have posted this when it happened. My wife and I were excited to eat here. We ordered a bottle of wine and our entree's. We were enjoying some bread when a reasonable size Cockroach crawled across our table. After that, we didn't feel like eating. We told he manager (or maybe the owner, I am not sure) that we were going to leave. He said "really, you are going to leave because of a bug". We said yes, and never looked back. No offer to comp our wine. I don't know if the same folks own this place, but if roaches come out in a restaurant with the lights on, that means there are hundreds of them in the nighttime all over the place, and likely in the food. I have yet to have a better meal this year than I had last night at Le Chat Noir. Some background: I have been teaching myself French using the Coffee Break French podcasts (they've really been helpful, and I find my French improving every day) and have been looking for a decent Parisian restaurant since my girlfriend and I returned from Paris this past January. Living in Tenleytown, we drive by this restaurant every time we go down Wisconsin Avenue and are always saying, "Oh, that looks nice, we should have dinner there," but never really get around to it. It bisects Wisconsin at 42nd Street and is just slightly set off from the main avenue by this caddy corner. I was having a sort of "blah" day and my girlfriend decided that we were going to go to Le Chat Noir so that I could practice my French with the French waiters and so we could finally try the food we had heard so much about. The inside of the restaurant was, as many others put it, very quaint and romantic... the adornments on the wall - the accordion along the top portion that separates the front of the restaurant from the rear, the softly-painted wall hangings that bring to life the joie de vivre that are French bistros - were nicely added pieces that accentuated the ambiance within. We sat in the back corner of the restaurant and were promptly served by a helpful, friendly, and attentive waiter. The pre-meal bread was so delicious, I had to ask for seconds - in French, of course. Naturally, speaking French is not a requirement, but it made the experience all the more enjoyable for me. Even my girlfriend was happy when he responded in slow, easy to understand French and subsequently repeated either his request or question, in English. I ordered the Saumon de l'océan pôélé aux poivrons (pan roasted salmon with oven-roasted quinoa, asparagus, and topped with thinly sliced bell peppers). Salmon can be a tricky food when it comes to preparation - either it's too soft, too well-done, too fishy-tasting, not fishy enough... but this fish was quite possibly the best piece of salmon I have had in my life. Crispy but not fried, fishy but not too fishy... it was delicious and well-complimented the other foods surrounding it. My girlfriend's crepe with scallops was probably just as delicious, but since I don't like scallops, I'm not going to embellish or feign enjoyment of it. The dessert we ordered, the Belle Hélène crepe - sliced pears, chocolate sauce, toasted almonds, and a cup of dark chocolate ice cream - was the perfectly sumptuous end to a wonderful meal. All in all, Le Chat Noir is what I would call a "hidden gem" of Washington, DC. If you are willing to pay $3-4 more than you normally would at another eatery, you should give Le Chat Noir a first (or second) look. Bon appetit! read more

Very nice little french restaurant with a covered outdoor seating and indoor capacity of about 30-40. Unfortunately it's too hot - 95F today so indoor seating was the more popular choice. The lunch menu is simple with typical french fare including crepes. The nicoise salad - being my fav salad immediately caught my eye. When I placed the order the french waiter asked me how I wanted it done it was a pleasant surprise and I ordered it almost rare. The salad was well balanced not filled with too much greens, had haricot vert, boiled eggs, olives, potatoes, anchovies- a nice touch. Lightly dressed, I love this salad very much! I stopped in here for lunch on a weekday and we were seated at a table directly next to our new best friends (it is very small). Ok, a little close for comfort, but I can deal. Everyone was drinking wine (at 11:30 a.m. on a weekday -- do these people work?). It took 5 minutes to be greeted and get water. Nothing on the menu looked appealing. Several more minutes passed. No acknowledgment from the waiter. I gave up and we left. Too bad b/c this place is really cute. Not sure if we were just too young-looking for the staff to decide we were worth the time, or if the problem was that I was in jeans and not a suit (though my companion was), or that we didn't speak French. The overall experience was good, however we came very close to walking out after our initial encounter with the host/busboy. We probably would have walked out except for all other nearby restaurants were closed by the storm. The host made us take off all our winter clothes at the door before we got to the table and made no effort to show us to a table so we sat ourselves. When we got our menus, he overheard me mention to my friend that I'd like a cappuccino, and said, you're going to order a cappuccino?" I said I would like one please, then he sighed and said: "well it's really hard to make," and walked away. I have never had a server blatantly say that, and also I know that an espresso machine is NOT that hard to operate. We were getting ready to leave when a very friendly man, who turned out to be our server, for the rest of the time came over and asked us if we would like coffee, hot chocolate, and yes, a CAPPUCCINO (because it is on their menu). So we ordered cappuccinos and they turned out to be wonderful, they were even served with a little piece of Valrhona dark chocolate. After that the experience was great, the atmosphere is nice, the food ( we all ordered crepes or sandwiches) was good, and the pricing wasn't bad. My boyfriend and I went here for our one year anniversary brunch. We got a voucher deal thru Travelzoo.com where we were able to get 2 appetizers, 2 entrees, 2 desserts and a bottle of sparkling wine with orange juice for $45! We started off with the side salad for him and the potato vichyssoise (cold soup) for me. The Vichyssoise was a new experience for me but it went well with the bread they gave us as well as the homemade potato chips that came on top. For our entrees: I had he French toast and he had the steak with French fries. The French toast was amazing and it came with sides of chocolate syrup, maple syrup and honey and fruit. My boyfriend enjoyed the steak and he wished there was "more" lol. Lastly we had the vanilla ice cream and lemon sugar crepe. The ice cream was very tasty and some of the best vanilla ice cream I've ever had! The lemon sugar crepe was a bit tart for my liking so I didn't even finish it, I didn't like it very much. The service was great but I wish the atmosphere and decorations matched the idea of the restaurant. It didn't really give me the "high class feel". A group of us came here for a birthday brunch. Overall, it was an enjoyable experience (due more to the company than the restaurant), but there were several not-so-enjoyable aspects. The place itself is cozy french chic (how I, having never been to Paris, imagine most Americans imagine Paris to be). The brunch menu was pretty big and for $20 you get a mimosa, a main course, and a dessert. I opted for the salmon benedict and the lemon butter crepe. As both a smoked salmon and eggs benedict addict, I was pretty unimpressed. The food was edible, but nothing to write home about. The crepe was good, but it's typically difficult to mess up a crepe. Others seemed to enjoy their meals, but no one was raving. The worst part was, to be truthful, not the food (which was still okay) but the service. Went here for valentines day and was very pleased. The other reviewers were talking about the service but on one of the busiest days of the year everything came out quick and the servers were very friendly. Between us we had the escargot, French onion soup, chicken/quail in a filo dough, short ribs, crepe dessert with pear, creme brûlée and several of the wines and drinks. Everything came out hot and well flavored. The aesthetics of the presentation was top notch and up to French standards. Way better than bistro du coin and even bistro bis in my opinion. Some of the food was bit over seasoned but in general not in a bad way, not overly saucy just a bit too much of various spices. I left feeling very happy with the whole meal. The atmosphere/ambiance was great as well with a couple stories and I could see it being very nice in the summer with the doors open as well. I'd give it a five based on the fact that every other place in DC is packed or too busy for brunch and this place is comparatively empty on Sunday morning, at least the morning I went. But it's also actually one of the better brunches I've had. We had a larger party (7) but they had no problem accommodating and we came in around noon. The salmon eggs benedict here is really good. Everyone I was with ordered the same thing and they seemed really happy with it. The brunch deal is pretty great--18.50 for a mimosa an entree and either an appetizer or a desert crepe. i ended up just going with a bloody mary, which was decent, and an entree. The only minor issue was that they only accept a maximum of four cards per table, which can make splitting the bill messy. Definitely an underrated place for brunch and I hope it stays that way.
