Amir sets up the raclette heater over the giant wheel of cheese.
    Lisa T.

Our waiter, Amir, made the whole experience so much fun. He speaks great English too.. They do have wonderful fondues but while you are here, you have to get the raclette, which features a giant wheel of cheese heated under your personal raclette heater. Your waiter will teach you how to do it. I ordered the "small" green salad which was actually huge. The raclette came with steamed potatoes and baguettes (both unlimited), and nicely varied charcuterie (ha ha, not unlimited). There isn't much ambience -- I mean it's pleasant but it's not romantic or anything and the surfaces are hard making the place noisy. But the atmosphere is so high-spirited and you can tell everyone wants to be there. These days in Paris you have to make a reservation for everything. We got turned away from Pain Vin Fromage, for example. But Le Chalet Savoyard lets you make a same-day reservation on the phone, so go for it!

    Horrible meat !

A potence dish for €30 pr. person and a terrible meat, impossible to chew on. My complaint didn't seem to bother the waiter, he ignored me, took my plate and left.

Oh my - melty cheese heaven. After three plus mile walk to Père-Lachaise Cemetery, the lumières show, and a wine break, we needed dinner. No reservations, so our only choice was to sit on the patio at 7 pm. That was still perfect. The patio is protected on three sides by the building, has a cover, and several space heaters. Plus heat from the raclette. Their biggest fame is fondue and raclette. We chose raclette. There is a section that lists the dozen types of cheese you can choose from. We went with the white wine rubbed cheese. The tiny table for two slowly fills up with the large raclette heater. A dish of potatoes, basket of bread and jars of pearl onions and pickles appear. Then arrived the half moon of cheese and the charcuterie platter. It had two huge slices of country ham, two good sized slices of a different ham, four slices of dried beef and eight pieces of salami. Plenty of food. All this was 23€ a person and it does take a minimum of two to order. Take your time to leisurely enjoy the meal, you will ever be rush. It's entertaining watching the cheese bubble, melt and the slice down and onto food waiting below. The staff was extremely busy, but always polite. Yes, would return to try the fondue.

Our friends who live in Paris brought us here, and one of them grew up in the French Alps, so this food is very reminiscent of her childhood (and is pretty legitimate!). There was an English menu, and staff knew limited English, but all diners were local. RESERVATIONS: Made by phone one day in advance for 4 adults + 1 baby on a Sunday at 7pm. There was already a line when we arrived (and they open at 7pm!). THE SERVICE: Fine, but a little hard to get a hold of sometimes (they are crazy busy). I appreciated that there was no rush, despite the line - we ate slowly and hung out until 10:30pm. THE COST: 117,80€ for dinner for four. Pretty reasonable, and we got a ton of food! THE FOOD: We got the Raclette au lait cru (25€/person), Mont D'or (24,50€), Tartiflette Lardon (16,50€). All were variations of cheese, meat, and potatoes, and as simple as that sounds, they were all delicious. It was the cheese - sharp and savory, it made everything taste great. You can also put the raclette wheel super close to the heater and get a nice crispy edge to it! DESSERT * Tarte Myrtilles (blueberry pie) - 5 stars I didn't expect a fondue place to have good dessert, but WOW! The crust was perfectly buttery & crumbly, and the blueberries were fresh and just the right balance of tart and sweet. * Cup Mont-Blanc (9€) - 3.5 stars. Good, very sweet. My friend said this is very genuine dessert from the French Alps (where she grew up).

A very strong carafe of rosé. #excellent

In A Nutshell: -If you love hot, oozing cheese then you need to book a table at Le Chalet Savoyard in the 11th District of Paris. -We all know about fondues, but have you ever had a raclette? -It's a cheese wheel cut in half that is mounted on an instrument w/ a heating element that perfectly melts the cheese down onto whatever you want to eat it with. -Order the "raclette w/ unpasteurized cheese". -Minimum order of 2 people, each person is 25 euro. -You also get bread, boiled potatoes, cold cut meats and mini-dill pickles to eat your raclette with. -If you are sitting outside, I highly recommend ordering a carafe of the cold rose wine. Overall, my wife and I had one of the best meals of our trip. It's super-fun and delicious to eat the raclette! P.S. We came to Le Chalet Savoyard in search of raclette while we stayed in Paris. Raclette is a dish where a wheel of cheese is melted on top and the cheese is scraped off. This restaurant was a little farther outside of the city but we were able to locate it quite easily! There is exterior seating but since it had been raining, we were seated inside. The inside is nice and cozy, and has upstairs seating but was closed off, maybe because it wasn't busy. I have a very limited elementary proficiency in French and I hadn't spoken a lick of French since high school; however, the staff was super accommodating and had some servers that were able to speak some English. Some things got lost in translation but I am really grateful that they were able to communicate with us. We got menus (in English, yes!!!) and asked our server for recommendations of cheese. He recommended the raclette d'abondance, and described the cheese as mild and fruity! It was our first night in Paris so we had no idea what that meant but went with that pick. The raclette was 25€ a person, is all you can eat cheese on the wheel and came with accompaniments of deli meats and boiled potatoes. The cheese wheel came out and they plugged in the heater. I thought the meal was very interactive and very cool! You scrape off the cheese as you wish, you can adjust the position of cheese and intensity of heat. It's nice because you have fresh, hot cheese to scrape so it doesn't get gummy. I highly recommend this restaurant! Although a little pricey, it was a super cool experience and very fun and interactive. The waiters are very nice and helpful. I was cheesed out for the rest of our visit lol but I loved every minute of it! Definitely take a visit!

We came here specifically for their famous Riclette cheese dish. It was delicious and at the same time very heavy. The experience was fabulous and the outdoor seating was inviting and set off the street in a unique little nook. The waiter helped us choose the right cheese wheel and wine to pair with it. The charcuterie meat plate and potatoes complimented the cheese perfectly. We pretty much rolled out of the restaurant. Good thing we had a long walk after dinner.

Oh holy raclette! That's what we came here for, at the behest of a local friend, and we were not disappointed! Raclette is the name for a type of cheese made from cow's milk that is made into a wheel and used for melting. It's a Swiss dish but can be found many places in France. We had seen videos on Facebook of a restaurant in NYC where people were melting a wheel of cheese and scraping it onto their food and had really wanted to try it. The name of the restaurant basically means "The house of Savoyard" and "Savoyard" can refer to several things but in this case it is referring to the cuisine. Like chalet, it refers to Swiss, so Swiss House of Meats and Cheeses of the Alps! This restaurant is pretty spacious, with a small courtyard for outdoor seating. It's a pretty "hip" place and Yelp told us to get there early before it got packed. We arrived near opening at 7 pm and there were only 2 tables seated but they do take reservations. The place was huge and had an upstairs as well. The menu came in English and some of the translations were weird but it was easily discernible. The waitstaff were all super nice! They had a lot of salads and main dishes other than cheese, but what most people came for was raclette and fondu. There were beers and wines as well and tap water came to our table. For raclette they had 8 different kinds of cheeses and we went with the smoked. They bring out a raclette machine which is a metal device with a pronged side to hold half a wheel of cheese and a coil heater on the other side to melt the cheese. The heater is at an angle so you can get it right up on the cheese wheel (the wheel is held angled so the cheese can slough off onto your plate) and is attached via a slider. You have a small plate under the cheese to catch it and basically slide the heater in, let it melt, and when you're ready slide the heater away and get your plate under there quickly so you can scrape the cheese onto it. For smoked cheese the price was 24 euro per person (they were all 23 or 24) and the table was set with a dish of boiled potatoes, tiny pickled pearl onions and tiny pickles, bread and a charcuterie plate. The pickles/onions were very tangy and slightly spicy and served to break up the taste of the cheese and savory items quite well. The charcuterie tray had different hams, dark to light. It's basically all you can eat on the cheese (because they bring enough that you couldn't possibly finish it) and I believe they refill the potatoes and bread but the meat you had to buy more of if you wanted more, and there were other items on the menu that you could purchase but what I listed is what comes with it. This place was great and I'd love to come back for fondu. The cheese was delicious but it's JUST cheese, not a cheese sauce, so keep that in mind if you're not sure about trying it. It's definitely a cool, unique experience though and we ate enough to make us sick! (And still hadn't finished all our food).

This place is a must when in Paris. We were brought here by my friends husband that is French. We ordered the racellet, fondue and some other type of cheese that they only have available during this season. All was amazing it was brought out with all sorts of meats little pearl onions Baby pickles and potatoes .. of course we shared a red wine!! My only regret was not eating until I was extremely full!! I spent my whole trip comparing places and this is one of a kind!!

The raclette and cheese getting to know each other

During dinner, we found out that my cousin is pregnant with a baby girl. After dinner, more than one person in our dinner party made reference to having a cheese baby. This is either a testament to my family's immaturity or the quantities of fine food we ate - interpret as you wish. So where to begin? They have a huge menu, but you're here for the cheese. There's basically two styles: - Fondue: What you're used to. Cheese in a pot, slowly heated to liquid and then used for dipping breads, meats, etc. - Raclette: Holy crap! Basically they mount an entire half-wheel of cheese on some spikes attached to a sliding track. On the other end of the track is a heat lamp angled at the same degree as the cheese. You basically push the heater close to the cheese wheel, it melts at an angle down onto a plate, then you eat it up (or catch it mid-air). You can move it closer or farther depending on how much you want to eat that second. For fondue, we had the "ail et fines herbes" which is four cheeses with herbs and garlic. It was incredibly flavorful. For the raclette, we got a wheel of tomme de montagne. Insane. This came with potatoes, and all kinds of bread (which were delicious even without dipping). We also ordered a charcuterie plate. For dessert, we got the fondue au chocolat, and ordered three thinking we would all share. They brought out three separate plates covered in fruit, chocolates, marshmallows and ice cream to slather in chocolate. This would have easily been five stars for me, but the service was very slow. It wasn't rude at all, or even "French-slow" - the problem was that they had two waitresses on staff for about 15 tables. That's not the waitresses' fault, but everything took forever. To their credit, they remained polite despite the stress. I didn't think it was possible for four people to eat a wheel of cheese. If we hadn't walked 8 miles that day, I would have been flown back to New York by a cardiologist.

Best accidental discovery ever!…read more We were wandering the streets of Paris on our last night looking for a restaurant for one last memorable meal. On a whim we came in here because we saw that they served fondue and we thought that would be a good idea for supper. The restaurant name translates into "Fortunate like Alexander" in English. Did that ever turn out to be a fantastic decision. Read on to hear why. The restaurant's owner has to be one of the kindest, charismatic people that I have ever met. He welcomed us with open arms and we got to chat with him quite a bit and learn more about him. He also was very kind to us and gave us many free drinks just because he was a very generous person. This was completely unexpected and we were really grateful for this. In addition to a welcoming owner the atmosphere here in general was just relaxing and inviting. We got talking to the people at the table next to us and it turns out that they were regulars who lived in the neighbourhood and came here frequently because they had befriended the own. Meanwhile two buskers came by who played some mellow guitar music to add to the ambiance. Now I can finally talk about the food. We ordered a simple cheese fondue and it was wildly delicious. It came out very quickly and we enjoyed every mouthful. We were given plenty of bread to soak it all up and there was also a salad included so we could get some vegetables. Honestly my experience was so good here that I was almost sad to leave the restaurant at the end of the night. We wanted a memorable, final meal in Paris and boy did we ever get it. After eating here I feel fortunate like Alexander.

If you order the all you can eat, then they give you a paper menu where you order the raw items for your hot pot. Make sure to order a bowl of rice. The first thing that came out was a stir fry of shrimp (in shell and head on) in spicy sauce with lotus root, celery and sliced rice cakes. You eat the shrimp or whatever meat you choose. This is where a bowl of rice is perfect. Once you are finished with the meat/seafood, then they stop by with broth to add to your pot and turn on the induction burner. Once the soup is boiling, then start cooking your raw items. Keep in mind that anything floating at the top will catch the chili oil so be prepared for some spicy bites. You can order more ingredients through the paper menu. I found it to be way too much food, but I eat like a bird. It was so good - spicy smokey warm and hearty. They understand Mandarin Chinese and French so I was able to get by with my broken tourist French and 2 year old level Mandarin. Luckily my friend is more fluent in both languages so she did most of the ordering and asking questions. It was a great break from French food during my visit.

In Fondue, they give you veggies and meats and you dip them in hotpots of broth. Tables consist of ceramic tops which keep the broth warm while you do your tabletop "cooking". But we came here for the non-hotpot dishes. We had the lamb cumin dish and the sautéed chicken szechwan. The lamb cumin dish was perfection--perfect cubes of lamb covered in cumin with lots of spicy peppers. The chicken dish was really tiny bits of chicken sautéed in chili peppers--nice and spicy. The downside of this dish was that the morsels of chicken also included bits of bone. So technically they chopped up chicken into tiny pieces, bones and all , and sautéd all of it. So much care has to be taken while you eat this dish so that you don't swallow any bones. I didn't have a problem. We also ordered a side dish of white rice which was a little sticky as most Chinese rice tends to be. At the end of the meal we handed them a credit card which they claimed was declined. We had used it two hours earlier so we knew it was a good card. We gave them cash but our belief was that they wanted cash all along and just accidentally "mishandled" the credit card process so it wouldn't go through. Once we got home, we double checked with the credit card company and they said the card was fine and they did not see that a restaurant had declined the card. So, liar, liar pants on fire, if you want cash from your patrons, then put up a "No credit cards" sign and be done with it. We liked the food and service but don't like the shenanigans with the credit card which cost them one star.

In his many years of ordering martinis worldwide, he has never been asked such a question! The waiter oddly insisted that there's both red ones and white ones, which makes us curious as to what a red martini would have in it! Boyfriend wisely opted for the "white" one, very dry, and it met his very low expectations. I ordered a less complicated Aperol Spritz. Boyfriend ordered the frog legs as a starter, which he had all to himself, because I just couldn't. We shared the Raclette with Slices of Duck and Potatoes. To state the obvious, this is a lot of cheese. Basically, cheese with other food items playing a minor role. The waiter put a very 19th century looking contraption on the table, and told us to be sure not to touch the cheese block with the sides, as it would fry the cheese, and bad things might happen! (Like a fire?? Is this thing even safe? Oh, the things that you could not do in America abounds here). Regardless, the Raclette was quite cheesy and delicious, and we ate most of it. (Did I mention that it was a LOT of cheese)? A nice bottle of red wine accompanied our cheese meal, and we ordered two Absinthes as after-dinner drinks. The absinthe (again perhaps stating the obvious) was REALLY strong!! I poured the remainder of our bottle of flat water into it and asked for more. All in all, I had a lot of fun here. We laughed a lot, and the bill was around 100 euros for all of that (4 drinks, bottle of wine, starter, shared raclette plate). Boyfriend didn't like it as much as I did, but I would definitely come back to try the red martini, if nothing else!

The low rating of this restaurant doesn't seem right. We came in on our last night in France and it…read morewas still early. We found a nice table for our family by the front window. The restaurant has a cool old school ambiance. The decorations make you feel like you are in a different era. It only seemed like there was one server working but he was quick and efficient. We ultimately decided on getting their fixed menu special that was about $30 euros each. To begin we ordered a salad and I ordered escargot. The salad was tasty for my wife but could use a little bit more dressing. The escargot was great. Those six little snails are made with garlic, butter, and tasty herbs. They were also fairly big. For our main dish my wife ordered a beef dish that smelled and tasted wonderful. I ordered the fried duck. It was so good but the fried potatoes or croquets were a welcome surprise. For dessert we both ordered the creme brûlée. It wasn't the best we had in France but it was pretty good. The bathroom downstairs was clean albeit the ceiling is low so if you are tall prepare to squat. The negatives for the restaurant are the lack of a happy hour. It seems most restaurants around offer some good deals but they do not. That would really bring this restaurant to a five star place in my opinion. Still worth a visit though.
