Delicious sparkling blanc de blanc and the view from our table on the patio

Wonderful gem of a restaurant in Wolfville at the Grand Prè winery! The food was incredibly fresh and good--our favorites were the gnocchi with local blue cheese, vegetable "boudin" and the best tuna tartare I've ever had. Server Sarah was delightful and we tried a few different wines from the estate, including the blanc de blanc sparkling which was so tasty. We sat outside on the patio. Loved it!

House charcuterie board at Le Caveau - very good!

Le Caveau at Domaine de Grand Pré became our lunch destination by default after doing a little wine tasting here, and the outdoor pergola is a beautiful spot for lunch on a sunny afternoon. The parsnip and chaga soup was really excellent, but we waited almost thirty minutes for the main lunch courses to arrive with not a word as to why we were experiencing such a lengthy wait. The patio was not busy, with only three or four other parties being served. When our food arrived, my house charcuterie platter included four different cured game and meat products, an assortment of house pickles, and two different breads, all very good, for $18. Other courses included a tasty Roman gnocci and a Reuben sandwich, both of which were considered good. However, the two schnitzel sandwiches were only considered okay for the other two in our party. When the lengthy wait issue was mentioned, there was no apology by our waiter - only a look of disbelief on her face and a promise to talk to the kitchen about it. What was surprising was that she didn't seem to see an issue with the length of time it took to deliver a relatively straightforward lunch in the first place! A tough one to score! A beautiful setting, a great wine selection of both their own and imported wines, food quality and prices ranging from excellent to okay, but inattentive service with a bit of attitude, and no apology. Sorry, but for me, I won't return, so the score reflects this.

Excellent small restaurant on the grounds of Grand Pre vineyard. Stopped for lunch. Small menu, but excellent choices. Had the mussels which were served in a cider/dill broth which was different than any other broth I've had(we welcomed the difference after eating mussels everyday for a week now in the same broth.). We had the fish cakes and pad Thai both of which were excellent. Great service, but you may have to wait to get a table. Highly recommended!

    Hanger Steak.

$$$-$$$$ Great medium size restaurant for dinners and wine. Lots of choices for drinks especially wine. Service is great. Their only steak offering is hanger steak. The sauce is great and the steak is properly grilled. The texture of a medium-well hanger steak is closed to the texture of a 90% well-done rib steak or even T-bones. Worth to go.

Juniper Food And Wine - Hopgood's Hot Chicken Sandwich (TM)

While on a jaunt through the Valley and the Acadian Shore for our tenth (!!!) anniversary, my wife…read moreand I had dinner at Juniper on our first night in Wolfville. It was a lovely and warm, late spring evening, but we ate inside since we were on the later side, and there's still a big difference between dining al fresco in June versus July or August. The interior was subtlely decorated with a light sage green paint that paired well with some mirrors and frames that give an art deco vibe, with just a dash of country decor to keep things from getting too pretentious. The menu is compact, but how enticing nearly everything sounded was encouraging! We ended up getting one of the daily specials - roasted king oyster mushrooms - as one of our starters, as well as baked potato beingets, and the spring risotto and Hopgood's Hot Chicken Sandwich for our mains. The toothsome mushrooms had a great, savoury taste, while the snap peas popped with their signature crunch and bright, vegetal flavour. Wisps of rasped cheese added salty goodness, and some edible flavours brightened the dish up further. I had ordered the baked potato beignets to flesh out my meal since the chicken sandwich is a la carte, but you don't really need a reason to get these other than the fact that they are absolutely incredible! The beignets themselves were fantastic; having never been to New Orleans, I don't have a good point of reference but they were wonderfully crispy on the outside and soft and doughy on the inside, so it's hard to see where they might gone wrong. The baked potato-style toppings amped it up further, with sour cream, smoked cheddar, bacon and chives. I could swear that there was some serious garlic flavour in there was well, but maybe the smoky cheese was throwing my taste buds off. My Hopgood Hot Chicken Sandwich (TM) was a top-notch, fried chicken sandwich. The big piece of thigh had a thick, ultra crispy breading, and pleasant layer of heat from a dousing of hot sauce. Some coleslaw brought a little bite and the creamy "comeback sauce" evened out the heat of the chicken. The toasted, sesame seed-dotted bun held up admirably well to the delicious hot mess within. My wife's spring risotto wowed as soon as we saw the verdant green dish, with asparagus and wild leeks lending their signature, springtime flavours, with further bright bursts from the preserved lemon and pear shoots. Service was relaxed and friendly thought our meal. It's especially satisfying when a destination meal lives up to the hype, and Juniper was firing on all cylinders for our meal with spot-on flavours, execution, ambiance and service.

The menu changes to what is fresh and it was a bit late in the season so it was a bit limited. We started with the beef tartare which was different from what we expected as it had an Asian twist but it was delicious. Also had the oysters with the chefs own fresh hot sauce, also tasty. My wife had the crispy skin salmon which was supposed to come with leaks and peppers but she doesn't like peppers so the chef graciously whipped up a fantastic cauliflower with hazelnut brown butter which was fantastic. I had the pork Milanese with prosciutto basil green beans which was exceptional. If you have room for it don't miss the chocolate eclair for desert, it is heavenly.

I should have known better when we walked in to find a crowd of drunks so young that they were dancing to Justin Bieber's Baby single completely unironically. That's right - this was a bar full of people born in the nineties and I've never seen anything so terrifying in my life. Except perhaps the trend of mini dresses, at least 40% of which were actually wedged in crevices where no mini dress should ever be wedged. The Anvil is one step above sawdust floor, you guys. It's practically a barn for the next generation of binge drinkers. You walk by the bathrooms on the way in (and the smell never really leaves you), the dance floor is to the left, the bar to the right, and the secondary bar and area wherein you will find all the fights is straight ahead. People will just toss their plastic cups of ice across the room when they're finished their $2.50 well shots, they will also knock you off your chair in an attempt to lure a mate with their sub par 'everyday I'm shufflin'' reenactment, and they will be just as messy as you'd expect for a rural university town dive bar where 19th birthday celebrations are shouted out over the sound system. While this place left me rattled and shellshocked, the DJ sure knows how to play those Top 40 hits that you car-dance to on the way to work and $2.50 drinks can't be argued with. Whether they're worth braving the rest? Well, that I'll leave up to you.
