I have been coming here as a child with my family since the early 60s when the Pirate was in his…read moreglory and the Frank Sinatra types frequented the place and you never knew what the bill was going to be, but it was usually a lot, but not always depending on the Pirate's whims. You could throw your chair in the fire, a donkey rode through the dining area and fireworks went off while a duo sang romantic Spanish tunes. The pirate would cut the top of the wine bottle off with a flourish of his cutlass and pour you a glass. Of course the food was great too. When we arrived in Menton we were told the restaurant had closed down and the property was for sale. We drove to the restaurant anyways and were thrilled to see it was still open by the Pirates son Ricardo who was closing up for the evening. And there was a menu with very reasonable prices. We made reservations for the following Friday for me and my teenage son and daughter. The location by the sea is unbeatable. We parked out front on the street in a reserved spot around 8:30. There was a couple there before us and we could see their shrimp and sardines (a specialty) were on the grill as we walked in. We started with sardines and shrimp, both delicious. My son had the grilled duck leg that was fall off the bone delicious. My lobster was grilled to perfection with an accompaniment of nicely spiced grilled eggplant and red pepper in olive oil. Our ice cream dessert was a perfect finish to a memorable evening even though we didn't throw our chairs into the fire.

J'ai dit que je n'en avais pas mangé comme le serveur l'a vu quand il a récupéré mon assiette, mais ils ont refusé de me rembourser pour le repas. Encore une fois, j'aurais immédiatement dit au serveur, mais je ne pouvais pas le faire à cause de la position délicate d'être avec un groupe de professionnels - et malgré tout, aucune pizzeria respectable ne devrait servir une pizza brûlée de manière cancéreuse. The eggplant pieces were ALL crusted with black burnt pieces, and the whole half of the crust was burnt and uneatable - and the crust is the main reason to go here, because it's supposed to be really good. The underside of the pizza was also burnt. I was unable to eat most of my pizza because of how burnt it was - I could eat no more than a few bites. I was with a group of my professors and peers, otherwise I would have told the waiter immediately. Since I could not, I told the manager immediately after everyone else had left, and he was extremely rude and dismissive - "oh it wasn't burnt when you ate it but now it's burnt?!" etc. even though It was extremely rude and disrespectful. I said that I did not eat most of it as the waiter saw when he collected my plate, but they refused to refund me for the meal. Again, I would have told the waiter immedaitely, but I could not because of the awkward position of being with a professional group - and regardless, no respectable pizzeria should be serving pizza that is cancerously burnt. I was barely able to eat two bites of it. Will never be coming here again, severely disappointed by the burnt food and the awful, rude manager.
