My favorite stop leaving the Northern Shore just south of Duluth on 35 Barnum exit. A must stop every visit. Excellent food, homemade pies and bakery, special menu to go along with a wide variety of other selections. Breakfast all day. The view and outdoor seating is spectacular. My friend and I stopped there when we were on a road trip. We had a 10 minute wait for a table, so we checked out the gift shop in the lower level. The server was friendly and the food came out fast. I had the cranberry turkey melt and hand-cut fries. Both delicious! I was leery of ordering the fries based on other reviews; but we liked them. We stopped here for breakfast after Grandma's Marathon. The view and atmosphere of the place were perfect. Very down-home local vibe, including the huge statues in the back. We had a window table with a lovely view. I chose French toast which was thick, sweet and with hints of cinnamon. I had a side of bacon which was thicker and tastier than typical store-bought bacon. My biggest complaint was that our food was served cold and took a long time to get to us. Exact opposite of my experience in typical restaurants like this. Usually they get you out as fast as they can. It didn't seem like they were short on help, as many restaurants are these days. I still give it a higher rating for the atmosphere and the prospect the already good food would have been even better served hot. read more

What I don't like is the service fee added automatically as well as a rather slow and laid back style of service. Perhaps the two of them are related? Lazy Bear is one of my favorite places to stop going to/from "up north." It's a bunch of people's favorite in fact, and we picked peak time to stop: a Sunday afternoon. A couple large groups beat us there so they said there would be a 30 minute wait for a table. We were out practice driving and this was our turn around and lunch stop so we were fine waiting. 40 minutes later I see folks arriving after us being seated so I checked on our name on the list. She thought there were maybe two Sues and someone else got our spot. Sigh. But we were then immediately seated and waited on. This place has a ton of windows with a great view of trees as far as you can see. Lots of seating. A little gift shop. Homemade pies. And ice cream! Lazy Bear makes everything from scratch, including their hand cut fries. Both my grandson and I ordered burgers. Me, a $15 half pound California (even though it wasn't on the current menu) and grandson got the $19 POUND burger. I loved the crispy-but-not-burnt edges of the burger. Grandson thought his burger could have benefited from some type of sauce. But both our plates were clean. And I also bought the last loaf of cranberry wild rice bread to take home. I liked the lazy grill combo. 2 perfect OE eggs, the best hash browns I ever had, and the sausage patty was most unusual. The consistency was actually melt in your mouth soft. It tasted of maple. Delicious. They promote everything as homemade. I would be curious about the pancakes and some handy pure maple syrup to buy to put on it. Basil liked the North wildrice omelet. Awesome Angie took great care of us. Very comfortable seats that are a good height. One bathroom for the whole place that is always busy. The menu is amazing and I'd be curious to try dinner. Love this place! The staff has always been awesome and the food is amazing. And any restaurant that serves breakfast all day is top notch in my book! I stop here often for a burger or breakfast on trips to or from Duluth. But mostly, it's the pie that pulls me off the interstate. Parking: we got in at 8:20. This place is right off 35, and was right next to a motel we stayed at. So it only made sense. We drove since we had things to do after. Parking lot was pretty packed but not many people inside so it maybe a park n ride? Seating: we got a seat by the window, so an excellent view. We saw tons of seating in the back room. It was seat yourself at 8:20am on a Wednesday. But that probably changes. Atmosphere: this place was very cute, an excellent stop for our vacation. Very sweet server named Marie. Food: the food here was all a 11/10. Excellent portions for me, and for him. Well seasoned food, cheesy. Great side options. I had a croissant sandwich with the signature potatoes. It was so good, the sandwich was as big as my hand. The potatoes were well seasoned and crispy. Fiancé got a mix of the potatoes, over easy eggs and sausage. With a side of cinnamon French toast. Honestly one of the best breakfasts I've ever had. We stopped here on a drive from Minneapolis up to Duluth, and am so glad we did! My friend and I both got the steak skillet, which came with two eggs however you liked (I got mine over medium) along with sautéed spinach, potato hash with regular and sweet potatoes, sautéed onions, grilled steak and topped with feta cheese and Hollandaise. There was SO much food all served in a cast iron skillet - it was phenomenal. And for only $11, it also came with your choice of a side. My friend and I both ordered a side of "small" pancakes which are not all that small... but WOW were they good! So sweet and caramely... I still dream of these pancakes two weeks later! The restaurant itself was super cute and well decorated, and service was very friendly. We loved the huge Minnesota gift shop in the basement, as well as taking pictures with the huge statue out front. Definitely worth a stop! If I am back anywhere in the area, I will for sure make it a point to head here again. read more

We were driving back home from a trip to Duluth and found this place on the side of the road for a 10:30 am breakfast on a Sunday. Blake our server was AMAZING! Give this kid a raise. He was fast, pleasant, had great suggestions, kind and would hold his own at any 5 star restaurant in the cities! The view was gorgeous overlooking the lake a trees. We had the Mn omelette with wild rice and a side of French toast ( recommended) and also the hash with a side of cranberry toast ( recommended). Food was HUGE portions and really tasty! Driving from MSP to Duluth. Read reviews so we were prepared for the 12% "optional" service charge. I quoted optional because we were never really asked if we wanted to pay it. When looking up reviews we also looked up the menu and decided to go because there were some items we really wanted to try. Surprise, surprise we could not order off the menu on line because those are for special holidays. My advice is to fix the website. After the disappointment of not getting what we originally wanted we ordered Wild Rice meatloaf and chicken salad sandwich with the fresh cut fries. To drink: coffee and blueberry pie malt. The meatloaf, chicken salad croissant, fries, and malt were excellent. Couldn't drink the coffee. And the ketchup had a BBQ taste which we did not like. Lazy Bear has been a stopping place for my family for years while on our way to our vacations up north. I was so bummed when I found out I have celiacs and can only eat gluten free, I thought, bummer no more Lazy Bear. However I was wrong, they opened up their menu to gluten free option so our tradition will continue. I was so excited to see that big sign on their restaurant that said "Gluten Free Options", made my day. I had their GF French toast with bacon and it was so good, just like all the other items on their menu, I don't think I've ever had a bad meal there and that's a pretty good track record. Everything has that homemade goodness and they have expanded their coffee choices. Our waitress was friendly and very attentive, they add a 12% service fee that is split with all the staff, if you add any additional tip that goes straight to the waitress. I don't have a problem with that because the service and food has always been consistent and good. The restaurant has undergone some changes over the years and is alway warm and inviting. They have a little gift shop area and you can buy fresh made baked goods along with ice cream. We will be back as long as they keep the GF food items and the awesome service. read more
