It immediately reminded me of my dad as he used to take me to get pie and mash often when I was a kid. It's situated in the square just past the Abbey. If you're standing in the square you'd have a job to miss it. I was surprised to see people were actually queuing to get in. This made me think it must be good. Inside was clean and spacious. Fortunately, en route to visit the gardens in Capel Manor College down the street, I was able to spot the Pied Bull before things got out of hand. The monster reared its head, and I did an immediate U-turn to feed the beast. Expecting the usual pub mystery meats covered in clotted cheese, we were surprised to find that this establishment considers itself something of a gastro-pub serving a variety of odd "fusion" dishes, including a crepe-like ratatouille pancake, decent vegetable puree soup, chorizo covered in what apparently passes here for haloumi cheese, and a tuna steak that is of course cooked all the way through until it is dead, since, although great strides have been made, you Brits have a long way to go before you become acclimated to seared raw fish. Not a bad diversion. My grandmother was serene as butterfly fluttering about the gardens the rest of the afternoon.
