Met a friend for coffee and since I arrived first, I picked out a frosted Long John to go with my coffee and a loaf of fresh bread and a small container of zelnicky to bring home with me. Never heard of zelnicky? It's a type of cracker made with sauerkraut. Another customer told me they taste great with a glass of beer. I took his word for it and I suppose they do since the taste great if you like sauerkraut. Once my friend arrived, she chose a cronut to go along with her coffee. She had never tried one before and she raved how good it was! Before leaving, I bought a half dozen. She wasn't kidding...if you are in the New Prague area I'd highly suggest stopping in for pretty epic donuts but especially for cronuts! Wonderful bakery and coffee meet up place. I ordered a cinnamon roll with a water. The cinnamon roll had just enough cinnamon, and the bread was soft, and the frosting was just enough sweetness. We then realized they also serve food so I ordered the egg salad sandwich with sweet potato fries. The wait staff were friendly and welcoming. This little hometown bakery is AMAZING!!! Their prices are very reasonable and the service is outstanding! Their cronuts are to die for!!! I think they are the best sweet treat I have ever tasted. But if you want to try one, get there early... they sell out fast! this place is so cool, it's like a step back in time with their 50's diner type counter and stools. we just love it, and it has SO much character! My favorite place to go for donuts my kids and I have a tradition on the first day of school we always go and get the big kings donuts that are as big as their head lol sometimes they have them sometimes they don't but my kids always pick something and always chose to go here. Since we were in the neighborhood and always enjoy comparison shopping, we thought we would visit Laus Czech Bakery to try their kolackys. They were just a short trip north from Montgomery. Laus is in another small town. In fact if we lived here, this is the type of place locals would visit daily. They have a bakery and they also serve coffee and other goodies. When we visited there were people sitting inside eating and visiting. Unfortunately for us they had the same type of kolackys but did not have any individual kolackys in their cases. All they had available was pre packaged kolackys. Since we had already tasted that style we elected to not purchase a pack of kolackys. Since we already had a bunch of goodies from our previous stop we decided to save ourselves as we had more goodies planned for our day. Next time we come back and we do a few times during the Fall, we'll pick up some other baked items to try. read more

I can only talk about the donuts, but I will be back later this year and hope to try the lunches. But for now, the donuts are our subject. And what a subject to think about! There is a good selection of fresh donuts. I was partial to be peanut butter frosted donuts, but the chocolate donuts with cream frosting are very good also. The prices are not bad, and the donuts are not the small kind where you need a couple at a time. However, you may want to have more than one of these because of the flavor. You can also find a selection of juices and hot drinks like coffee to go along with the donuts. read more

We made a special trip to the bakery to try the kolaches. We were very disappointed...they were made just with roll dough and were dry with just a small amount of filling. I would not recommend. They are not what I was expecting based on the ones I've had elsewhere. However, the other donuts and pastries were very good. The people were very friendly. I was excited to try the prune kolatchy at this quant bakery. They didn't look like the kolatchy's I'm accustomed to but what the heck! Maybe it's a classic recipe I don't know about? Try something new, right? My first bite told me they were at least day-old if not older, so I called the bakery to see when they were made. 3 days ago, frozen, then put out again. I'll swing through next time I'm in town for another go, but my first visit was disappointing. I'm not against buying day-old goods, but these weren't marked as such. read more

Stopped in at this bakery on a recent road trip. Lots of choices here! All kinds of donuts, bars, cookies, kolackys, cream horns and eclairs. The cream horns were really good, so were the eclairs but they definitely needed more custard in them, they were only filled about halfway through. Every thing we had tasted great. This place is really cute, with a retro looking counter that serves burgers and other food. If I ever find myself near New Prague again I will definitely stop in and get some more goodies. read more

Driving through New Prague I decided to stop in for a donut and sandwich. Haven't been here in probably 30 years. A local older man said "they have the absolute best donuts in the area". I can't dispute that. She made me a cold ham sandwich on their wheat bread and with some chips. I also got some of their Kolackys, and a couple donuts for the morning. All that was just over $10!! After seeking out a place in the Twin Cities to find kolaches to no avail, I finally saw a review for a little place called Lau's Czech Bakery in New Prague (121 Main St W). New Prague is a bit of a drive for most from the Minneapolis area, but we live on the SW side of the city and figured if they have kolaches then it is worth the drive no matter how far. Let me begin by telling everyone about my love affair with the kolache. For those that are not of Czech/Slovak descent you many not have yet discovered this beautiful pastry and for those who haven't, all I can say is that you are missing out. Kolaches are a simple pastry, just a round pastry bread that is buttered and filled with preserves. The most popular are cottage cheese, poppy seed, prune, walnut and apricot in the Czech Republic but they have adapted other flavors upon their arrival in the US (cherry, strawberry, blueberry, raspberry, lemon, etc.). Before finding out about Lau's in New Prague, I had to special order my kolaches from a bakery in Cedar Rapids, Iowa (which has a large Czech population) and have them sent to me. The bottom line is that unless you eat a kolache within 1-2 days of when it was made, it isn't good. Finding a place in New Prague was a God-send. Lau's is a nice little bakery with friendly owners and GREAT kolaches! They have a nice variety of the classic Czech flavors and contemporary American flavors. What I thought was awesome about Lau's was the retro feel of the place. In addition to the kolaches and breads/donuts/etc, they do serve up a lunchtime meal where you can get a cheeseburger and fries for $5-$7 dollars, can't remember the price right off the top of my head. It included a drink. I didn't get it because after all, for me it is all about the beautiful kolache and their variety is as good as any I've had outside of the Czech Republic. Bottom line - try this place, even if it means you have to drive for an hour to get here. New Prague is close enough to the Twin Cities to make a morning out of it. There are other things to see and do in this quaint little community, but you absolutely must make Lau's Czech Bakery a stop. Great kolaches. Retro feel. Small-town charm. Since I was told about the wonderful Kolacky at Lau's Bakery in New Prague, I decided to take a ride there and find out for myself. The Kolacky are authentic, just the way my mother used to bake them many many years ago when we lived in Chzechoslovakia. They were not modernized and covered with sugar frosting. They were authentic and wonderful tasting. Perhaps you need a developed palate to be able to discern the fine difference in taste of this wonderful yeast dough pastry and the commercialized ones that you find in some food markets. My search for great rye bread in MN continues after giving Lau's a try. My mission was narrowly focused, and I bought a loaf of Bohemian rye bread. It was pre-sliced -- no option as to size of the slice like a real bakery. It was pre-packaged in a plastic bag -- again not what one would expect from a real bakery. Everyone knows that plastic bags turn crust to mush. It was soft and light -- more like angel food than the crusty, hearty texture I was seeking. It was, if one can believe the label, mostly wheat flour, which would partially explain the light texture and pale color. Traditional rye bread has a somewhat chewy texture, and the crust is evidenced by more than just a different color than the inside. I was hoping to find a bakery with freshly baked loaves of real rye bread, unwrapped and ready to slice. My search continues. Kolackys appeared, as most of the MN variety, more about the dough than the filling. I chose not to purchase any, but that is a matter of personal preference, not a judgment on the product. The place is welcoming and pleasant, with a lunch counter that I may try someday. I will not be there for the bread. read more

I drove from out of town specifically to buy prune filled Kolaches as part of our Christmas dinner. I was disappointed. They were dry and had little prune filling. I suspect they were made well in advance and had been frozen. read more
