First time visiting based on a Yelp review to pick up some early morning donuts for my kids. A classic donut shop with a great variety of raised, cake, old fashioned, french, and decorated varieties too. A very friendly and patient worker helped me get a good mix to try (kids like that the frosting was different flavors). I would recommend trying Luna Donut if you liked the original donut star off cliff road that Mark or Jill owned several years ago then you will like everything about this classic donut place. It is worth a drive if you live in the south metro. Owning an independent donut shop is a labor of love and all about the local community. My family was fortunate enough to continue Marks legacy and have that experience while we owned the original Donuu Star several years ago. As a Mother's Day treat we stopped in! This place was fairly picked over by 9:30! That was definitely a good sign! This place is located in a strip mall and has plenty of free parking! There isn't much for decor and it seemed a bit dark. There are a couple of tables, but you should plan on taking your food to go! The service was so/so. The person we talked with seemed annoyed we don't know what we wanted right away and just didn't seem like she was in a good mood.... No smiles. Not friendly. However, this place don't get its high ratings by having bad doughnuts and I can confidently say these are some of the best ones around! Apple valley is very lucky to have this place! They were warm, fresh and fluffy! They were sweet but not too crazy sweet! Seriously done VERY well! I would recommend coming in and taking them to go! I went there today because if the article that said best donuts in Minnesota plus the Krispy kreme is going strong again and I wanted to support a local business. It did not disappoint. The donuts were fresh and delicious. I tried pumpkin cake donut and the Bavarian cream filled chocolate frosting on top donut. One of the best filled ones I've had. The pumpkin cake donut was fried perfectly and had a great texture. This place is a hole in the wall type restaurant and really the interior is run down and not super hip. It doesn't matter - go in anyway. The donuts are worth it. Will go again next time I'm in Apple valley. Definitely check it out. The place was empty. read more

The employee that assisted me was friendly and engaging despite it being an early weekend morning. They have many flavors to choose from. I ordered a mix of raised and cake donuts. I was encouraged to see a steady stream of people going in and out as I arrived, but I did notice a family who sat and ate as well (there a few lightweight tables & chairs off to the side). I wasn't able to get a pic of the full dozen before my family tucked in, but it was a colorful and wonderful array. For me, the winners were the caramel topped cinnamon roll and the boston creme (they named it bavarian creme filled butI know what I know). Yassss! I just heard about this place and had to stop in. The staff couldn't have been more charming. Since it's new to me I decided to try my go to test donut, which is a raised glazed. This definitely passed the test! Nice and fluffy, great taste, one of the best I've had. I've had a donut shaped hole in my heart since Granny Donut closed, but this raised glazed fills it well. They open early and I didn't get there until a little after 9, but they still had a decent selection. They also let me know there were still making donuts and they had about 120 in the back so I should ask if I was looking for something not on the shelf. I'm in Apple Valley a few days a week and this will definitely not be my last visit to Luna Donuts. I hope this place does well because it's really worth it. read more

I find myself frequenting the location before school drop off and love how the staff is always happy to help my 4 year old pick out a donut. Second visit to Luna Donuts yesterday and once again the donuts were amazing. Granddaughter had her usual white frosting sprinkle donut and also picked a chocolate raised sprinkle donut. She usually eats the white frosting donut but this time she devoured the chocolate one. I had a chocolate raised filled with vanilla cream. Today I finished the maple long John. Great maple flavor and the donut was still nice and fresh with 8 seconds in the microwave. Staff are very nice. They gave my granddaughter a complimentary frosted donut hole.
