    My husband has been a patient with MemorialCare for over 10 years. So our recent experience has…read morebeen disappointing and worth sharing. He had weight loss surgery, and part of his ongoing care requires regular weight monitoring. He is a paraplegic and wheelchair user, so access to a wheelchair scale is medically necessary. It is a flat scale that allows an individual who cannot stand or transfer a way to roll on a scale to record their weight. For years, he used the wheelchair scale at the MemorialCare Surgical Weight Loss Center in Fountain Valley Ca without issue. The two ladies there have always been kind and accommodating. However, in December, the manager, Charlene Freeman, told him he could no longer use the wheelchair scale. No alternative was offered, no guidance was given. nothing. Since then, we have been trying to resolve this issue with no success. A request and call back for a case manager through a patient navigator was never returned His primary care doctor was kind enough to submit a referral for access to a wheelchair scale, which was denied. His primary care is located at the Los Altos facility and was I was connected with the referral coordinator at that location. She took the information on one occasion and I never heard from her again. I have left 11+ messages for Tamara (referral coordinator) with no response since March 5th Messages were also left for Danielle (lead patient navigator), Shiela, and Julie (referral coordinators), with no callbacks Multiple messages were left with Patient Relations at (657) 241-3475--no response Even outreach through social media has gone unanswered We even went to the emergency room hoping to use a wheelchair scale there, only to be told he could not use it because he was not being admitted as a patient. Today is March 18 and still no call back from any of the numbers that I left messages with. This is extremely frustrating and unacceptable. Access to a wheelchair scale is essential for his health, and the lack of response, follow-through, and basic accessibility is deeply concerning. This reflects a serious breakdown in patient care and communication. This is a violation of the ADA and basic patient care standards. This level of disregard for accessibility and patient care is unacceptable. MemorialCare's failure to respond to patient concerns is concerning . For this reason, we had to escalate the issue to UnitedHealthcare and the California Department of Managed Health Care.
