Like a maze inside, but very cool. Great service by the young lady who got us checked in! Felt like distant family welcoming us to their home. Charming. Live music, good food, great back patio/beach, and wonderful rooms with a good view and walkout to a patio overlooking the river. If there weren't so many telephone/power poles around the front of the place, photography opportunities would be great. At least the backyard is picturesque. The only slightly negative thing worth noting is that outside it can be a bit loud considering both the river with its small waterfall and the live music. Def would go back!

Loved my stay last week. From the moment I arrived, I was treated like family. After staying in…read moreprior years in smaller economy rooms, I booked a large room on the second floor with access to a shared balcony for 2 nights. The sound of the waterfall was extremely relaxing and since I was able to open windows it made for a restful sleep. My room was near the noise from the bar but it ended at 9:00. The breakfast in the morning was delicious (fluffy eggs, bacon, biscuits and gravy, fruit, muffins, toast, bagels and mugs of coffee), managed by a wonderfully attentive woman who went table to table to ask if everythi was ok. All of this was accompanied by a beautiful view of the river. Great way to start the day. Dinner of grilled trout, mashed potatoes with garlic and rosemary, and braised heirloom carrots from the new fall menu was lovely. Finally, I enjoyed the mix of people I encountered, from retirees (like me) there to ride the Creeper trail (currently the Damascus to Abingdon portion is open, trail from Whitetop to Damascus open Mar27), to a group planning to hike the Appalachian Trail for 3 days. Lots of adventure to be found in the area. My favorite though was relaxing and painting on the deck by the river. Will definitely be back.

Called to make your reservation? I wouldn't count on it…read more In planning our trip to the Yeti race, Creeper's End Lodging was recommended to us as a place to stay in/near Damascus. The website has wonderful pictures of cottages and looks super inviting. I'm sure the hosts are great, but their reservation system sucks. Their website does not contain an online reservation form--only a standard contact us form and phone number. So not trusting online forms, I called to make my reservation. I spoke a very lovely woman for nearly 30 minutes who took down my name, phone number and email (which she had from the voice message I'd previously left) told me all about the property and about the town, helped me select a rooms for our group, and even promised to send me more information about the property and the town via email later on. She explained that the rooms were reserved for us and was looking forward to welcoming us "all the way from Chicago" in September. That was in January. Now, it's September and there's absolutely no record of our reservation. Lost. Gone. Ghosted. Apparently, phoned-in reservations don't count because when I inquired about our lost reservation citing this 30 minute phone call we had back in January, she responded with the following: "We get so many phone inquiries that we use the online contact form as a back up so we do not overbook. When those aren't filled out we assume that they have found another place or that their plans have changed. After the form is filled out we send a confirmation and we try to touch base closer to time. I am so sorry that we do not have your reservation." Uh. Wait, what? I was suppose to go back online and fill out a form AFTER I talked to a human to make my reservation? Oh, boy...

Who woulda thunk it? I'm always leery when I think of staying in cabins for the holidays, but…read moreWatauga River Cabins was a lovely stay for our family! We managed to snag the top loft around the Holiday season. To top it off, this place is pet-friendly, no questions asked and no pet deposit. This is an incredible perk for families traveling with their fur babies. Because they recognized that pets are family too, we took extra care to clean up after our pets on the property when they did their business outdoors. Not sure if they care about dog poop on the land, but may we suggest a small station for doggie poop bags? Also something to consider, we frequently saw loose dogs from the surrounding area running on the property and road, so we recommend being aware of this if your pet doesn't do well around loose dogs. Our cabin was approximately 600 square feet, had a gas fireplace (awesome!!!!!!), and we were right on the edge of the Watauga River. The land surrounding the cabin is lovely and the sound of the rushing river water is absolutely refreshing. The cabin comes with everything you would need for your stay: extra towels and bedding, extra spices, condiments, and coffee, a nice laundry facility on the ground floor, firewood for the camp fire outside, and an awesome grill and outdoor facility with plenty of seating on the river's edge. Our dogs loved romping in the lake. The only thing that the cabin didn't have was shampoo/conditioner, but there was plenty of soap in the bathroom and kitchen. The water heater worked great, so there was no issue with hot showers or hot water in the kitchen sink. Once you get the fireplace roaring, it's wonderful being able to settle in with a hot mug of coffee, free fast wifi, and satellite TV. Everything during our stay was perfect. We would definitely book this cabin again in the future for the holidays.
