This was the final spot attended on a food tour. It was the oldest candy store in New Orleans that had homemade chocolate treats including pralines. There were other options to choose from, but the pralines were the popular choice. I had a regular praline as well as a chocolate one. They were decent at best. Both of them hardly had any pecans unfortunately. I am not sure if it was just a one off, but it was disappointing. The actual chocolate portion was not bad, but pecans were needed. The chocolate was definitely the better of the two. It tasted very similar to a brownie. Like previously noted, it was a shame for the lack of pecans. Will I go back? Debatable. read more

Drawn in by the candy shop sign, we walked in with no hesitation hahahha. Loved the aesthetics of the shop. It's bright all around from the white walls, counters, shelves. I walked out with a few bags of the claeys hard candy priced at $4.99 each. Their popular flavors, like cherry and lemon, were sold out, so I opted for the watermelon which was solid. I also got to try their chocolate caramel, but it was okay. The caramel filling is very thin, and I would've preferred it to be chewier. It didn't taste authentic. Cute candy store... had come in for a Praline as I wanted to try as many as possible in the Quarter and do my own Praline crawl. In New Orleans Pralines are just about everywhere. Store offered samples and to be honest this was not my favorite. Very sweet and grainy. Though the homemade saltwater taffy was amazing. Got a bag to take home but ending up eating it all before it even made it back to New York. Friendly staff and large selection of freshly made confections. I walked in here and the lady behind the counter saw me come in while she was serving another man. Once she was done with him, she says, "now who's next?". I look at her and she is confused. I basically just let another family who came in behind me to go ahead as they said they would be quick. While I wait 15 minutes for them to finish their decisions on which chocolates and showing their videos and pictures on their phone to the lady behind her counter, it was "finally" our turn. Now this lady behind the counter was a bit harsh with "make sure you tell me all the chocolates you want on this side of the counter as the sliding doors are very heavy". Her further comments were a bit odd while we were selecting the chocolates. At any rate, we tried different ones and found the toasted coconut milk chocolate ones the best. Delayed review....Brian was awesome and helped me out really well.... Great tasting pralines as well!!!!! He also explained to me what a real praline should be and that nobody makes them that way anymore because they fall apart too easily. The choices there were good and I got a good variety so I can distribute them to my friends and family after I got back from my trip. I know they had other items in the store and it was well laid out but I came for the Pralines specifically and I would recommend trying Laura's !!!! read more

This one was my least favorite out of the three that I visited. They had a nice and sweet lady working that day, but they didn't have the touch available. They only had Rum Pralines available but didn't offer any samples. The pralines were good but incredibly sweet just like the lady working there. What can I say about Laura's candies? No, I'm asking you because I am eating my third piece of a different praline and my brain has stopped functioning from the divine sweetness rushing through my body. I entered Laura's to escape the heat and humidity only to be lured in like the Sirens by the offer of free tastes. My angel tells me to try one or two little pieces, it's ok. Then leave. I listen and gladly accept a small cut from the wedge of salted caramel fudge, dripping as if it needs to, with caramel like a lava flow. Thank goodness that this LA Nola serves it straight up. In LaLaLand this joint would offer the salted caramel with Kale. But I digress. The fudge produces an incredible urge to try another flavor, which I succumb to- creamy praline fudge. That just isn't fair. They both were delicious and now my devil is saying you can't walk in, try two half slab samples of salted caramel and praline fudge and then walk out like a freeloader. I pondered this for a New York minute and thought, what is a minute called in New Orleans? Probably an excuse to walk slowly through the sometimes stifling heat to sip down a chicory coffee while stuffing oneself with a beignet balancing just the correct ratio of powdered sugar in your mouth, on your hands, and all over your clothes like an act from Cirque de Soliel. My version of Café Du Monde would be clothing optional with plastic everywhere and after dousing yourself in powdered sugar the servers in hazmat suits would walk around and jet power spray you down. It might not be pretty but way more efficient than the current system. Since everything is performed slower in N'awlins, that took about a minute. I decided I couldn't just split so I decided to try a sample of maple praline and the original Creole praline that is made the old fashioned way without any dairy. Now my devil is incensed demanding I order something. So, I ordered a rum, coconut and Creole praline. I ate them as I wandered back out and around the French Quarter. The pralines were perfectly sugary and flavorful and the Creole was crunchier and quite tasty. My angel was not happy with me but the devil made me do it. I had enough sugar to last me a month but then dinner would sneak up soon and the culinary journey would continue. Laura's is a longtime establishment that knows what It is doing for all those with a devilish sweet tooth. read more

Tourist trap! Laura's Candies is one of the oldest candy shops in New Orleans, but it doesn't mean it's one of the best. In fact, I was very disappointed with my experience there. Over priced for mediocre sweets. Their "famous" pralines were gritty, the nuts were soft and old. While the jellies looked nice, they were no better than the fruit slices in the bulk food section. The rest of the store is made of repackaged sweets found in other stores. The woman working there wasn't knowledgeable about the products, only saying they're delicious, you should buy them all or that they are, in fact, made by someone else so she know nothing about them. While she was "pleasant" the entire time, I just felt it was all fake because we probably weren't her type of customers. Like most tourist traps, it's lipstick on a hog. There are better sweet shops close by that I thought were more genuine. Don't recommend. read more

The chocolate here was okay. I tried both a chocolate caramel turtle and a regular milk chocolate caramel square. The flavor was good, but the texture of the caramel was not my favorite on either. I wish the turtle had more pecans in it also. Overall it was okay but I had better from other places around there. I'm in love with their Mississippi Mud and my favorite is the Cajun Bark, which combines my two favorite things: white chocolate and macadamia nuts- so rich, with a little kick of that Cajun spice. I've also gotten to sample their pralines, which are pretty good. I have yet to try their ice cream. There is so much good stuff here! When I visit New Orleans, I'll have to drop by again. Sweetness has no place at this establishment. I was on the hunt for some sweet treats for my special someone back home, but instead I was faced with the sourpussed woman with blonde hair and a red sweater DEMANDING I shut her front door that was ajar upon my arrival. Walking in I was excited to purchase some confections, however this nasty woman only threw salt. I walked out knowing she just wouldn't get why I left. I unfortunately encountered an incredibly rude staff member. The salesgirl, Anne, was incompetent and could not add up the price of my postcards. She was rude, flustered, and seemed like she was hating her life. She got angry about me asking about different items in the cases, and said she would only open one case at a time "in their zones" bc "the cases are too heavy." She acted like a total hustler. Really awful, because I knew what I wanted. Very frustrating, because she kept trying to upsell me on things I didn't want. I bought a praline, to appease her, only to find out that it was not in my bag when I returned to my hotel. What a scam! My husband only eats dark chocolate, but she kept trying to get me to buy other stuff. Very annoying and a total waste of my time. I guess I'd hate my life too if I was 70 years old making $12 an hour. Sorry, maybe work would be easier if you weren't so abrasive. I should have just left, the owner should know what is happening, because it is causing their business to suffer. Miserable people should just stay home. What a shame. Who can resist pralines at the oldest candy store in New Orleans? Opened in 1913, Laura's Candies is in the conversation for best pralines in the city. The have all kinds of candies, not just pralines. Fudge, fruit jellies, chocolate dipped pretzels, sea salt caramels and their famous Mississippi Mud. The are samples of a lot of the fudge, pralines and chocolates so you can taste before you buy. With me, tasting just caused me to buy more as I couldn't resist not taking some back with me. Creole Praline - Their creole praline is cooked old style, with brown sugar, vanilla and pecans but no cream. No cream makes this praline more delicate and susceptible to breaking apart, but it's delicious. They have six other praline variants that are cooked with cream: Plain Chewy Coconut Chocolate Maple Rum The maple pralines weren't overpowered by the maple, the coconut pralines were creamy and rich and the rum really shined in the rum praline. I like most things maple, coconut and rum, but the rum really stood out to me and in my pick my dozen I packed it with a few extra rum pieces. A dozen pralines are $23.99. They hold their softness for a week before they begin to harden. They are still perfectly edible when they are hard, but one trick is to pop them in the microwave for 10 or 15 seconds to soften them up a bit if you want them pliable. When I was there I was lucky enough to catch the praline maker making the praline patties and putting them out to cool. They make their pralines fresh in house daily. They were very friendly and answered all my questions about their goodies. If you are a candy or praline fanatic, Laura's is a must stop on your New Orleans candy tour! read more
