Couldn't help ourselves as we walked by the shop. Our bellies were full from dinner but we still wanted a sweet treat to end the day. They had what looked to be every possible combination of dipped apples. The staff even let me "customize" my caramel apple. I wanted a peanut caramel apple with flakes sea salt. Michigan based Kilwins was established in 1947. Now a franchise, there are 146 locations in 25 states. However, there isn't any on the West Coast, which is why I haven't heard of it. I passed by the shop and the intoxicating aroma of delicious chocolate lured me in. The store has a clean aesthetic, and the display case is filled with handmade chocolates, fudge, candy apples, & pralines. The shelves are lined with prepacked sweet treats to take home. They also have ice cream, and the waffle cones are made fresh to order. There is a tantalizing assortment of flavors to choose from. Employees will happily give you samples of ice cream & fudge. Believe me - I wanted to try them all! I eventually decided on the New Orleans Praline Pecan. Kilwins prides itself on friendly customer service and the gentleman behind the counter exuded Southern hospitality and absolutely made my day. (I think his name was Ace. He worked the counter in the evening on June 25th.) I enjoyed my ice cream on my walk home. It was creamy, delicious, & delightful. It's decent ice cream, unique flavors. My favorite is the salted caramel and apple pie when they have it. It's extremely overpriced though. The staff is constantly changing due to inconsistent management. I worked here a few years ago and I will say things were kept pretty clean and organized but again, it depends on who is working. The service can friendly, but it really depends. The treats are delicious and made fresh, by demand. They are rotated and restocked in a way that the oldest ones are the ones they grab first so if you want the freshest one, asked specifically for one from the back. The coffee is not worth the money, it's outsourced, pre-packed espresso pods. Just head next door to Cafe Beignet. Overall, if you've never been, try it out. But, as I mentioned we were there for ice cream. I loved seeing Mackinac Island Fudge ice cream on the menu so far from the midwest. I ended up ordering a scoop of chocolate peanut butter and a scoop of sea salt chocolate caramel in a cup. Both were terrific. Went in to get some pralines. All seemed okay for a candy shop. It was bright and cleaned. Of course the fruit flies were there. I also overheard a worker mention an issue with them. The issue for us came when we were waiting to leave an a rat just came in like he lived there or something. . So we just left and threw away our pralines. Any touristy street in USA wouldn't be complete without a Kilwin's location. We were excited to see it, and made a beeline for the expensive treats after enjoying brunch in the French Quarter. The brightly colored, large store is inviting and automatically puts visitors in a good mood (or at least it does for me, but I have an unusually excessive love for all things treat.) My only complaint is that I was only able to order a large chunk of the fudge. In other locations, I could get a much smaller piece, but I was told I had to do a larger piece here. A cute little dessert spot near the French Quarter if you have a sweet tooth or want something other than beignets. They make their deserts on location & as soon as I saw them making their caramel candy apples, I wanted one, but I new I would make an absolute mess so I got some ice cream instead. They have a a specialty ice cream called the superman which is rainbowed color, but I passed on it just because I'm particular when it comes to ice cream. Sometimes I can tolerate ice cream, and at times it makes me nauseous. I got a waffle cone, and a waffle bowl, but not in the same day. They both were tasty with some chocolate treats on the side. It was hot outside which made it a prefect day for ice cream. The blue moon ice cream was good, but after awhile, it did have a metallic, bitter, medicine kind of taste.
