Unwelcoming, Overpriced, and Rude - Won't Be Back I visited this café for the first time this afternoon, and sadly, I didn't feel welcome or respected at all. I ordered a latte, sandwich, and a caramel cookie. When I went to use the washroom, a woman handed me the key on her way out. Not knowing where to return it afterward, I brought it to the counter. The older gentleman (who I assume is the owner) told me to "just put it over there." When I asked where "there" was, he repeated it, still offering no direction, as if I should automatically know. The younger woman behind the counter, likely used to this type of attitude, kindly stepped in to show me where to place the key--probably trying to keep the situation from escalating. While waiting for my coffee, I noticed a drink on the bar and asked the older barista if it was for "Brolin." She gave me a cold stare and ignored me. When I repeated that I had ordered an oat latte, she snapped, "If I said oat milk latte for Brolin, then IT IS FOR BROLIN, OK??" I was genuinely shocked. I had just come from the washroom and didn't hear my name called--I was simply trying to confirm. Her tone was unbelievably rude and completely uncalled for. My child also asked for a cup of water, which they served in a mason jar. Out of curiosity, he asked, "Oh, is this a cup?" and the owner replied, "If you can put water in it, it is a cup." Again--was that necessary? A little kindness would go a long way. Overall, the staff just seemed irritated, like serving customers was a chore. After reading other negative reviews, I can confidently say they're accurate. The owners and staff come across as unwelcoming, unfriendly, and unnecessarily rude. If you expect people to support a local business, the bare minimum is basic courtesy. No one owes their business to a place that treats customers this way. The oat latte was average--not worth nearly $7. The caramel cookie was okay. The sandwich was actually good, but unfortunately, not good enough to make me want to return. read more

Hipster coffee by the PNE area. So I finally figured out why I had never been here despite passing by so many times over the years. This place is only open during office business hours. Parking is available on Hastings, as well as the side streets. The inside is cozy and has that vintage feel. They sell coffee grounds in bags as well from the dispensers. Wonder if the old school rotary phone on the wall works. Would be cool if it did. There is also a nice large outdoor patio on the E side of the building, with limited shade. I live by the motto that we are predestined so knowing that is why Waze took me out of my way knowing I will see the sign that says Cinnamon buns! My rental car screeched over to this place to find the buns advertised on their banner. This is one of those moments that you say I wish I lived here so I could come here every day. Once inside I don't see them until final I see a glass tray with the ginormous buns. One to go please yes that's right back into traffic with a nice warm sticky bun on my lap. Love this little coffee shop. My favorite London fog is made here. There is moderate seating inside and some outside during the summer. They have a small parking lot as well! Staff very friendly. Cinnamon Bun Review Never been a fan of the coffee (nor the ambiance) of this establishment but I was craving for a warm and gooey traditional cinnamon bun and this place claims they make some of the best so I stopped by and picked one up to go. Frosted Cinnamon Bun: $4.50 (Pic Uploaded) Cinnamon Bun was warmed for 30 secs in the microwave to melt the frosting and the innards. My observations are as follow: - Skimpy with the frosting - Dry and doughy (not soft and gooey) - Lacked sweetness (not enough sugar syrup) Cinnamon Bun was more in line with IKEA quality cinnamon buns with the price tag of a high end gourmet bun. Just witnessed one of the staff members berate a customer, treating them like an idiot, for almost dumping a little coffee in the garbage. They have a pail for this purpose at the condiment stand, which is awesome, but if you've never seen this before then how would you ever know? She could have been kind about it but treated this person like trash. They then proceeded to laugh about how she once told someone off for this and that person was offended because she was "too sensitive." I walked out and won't be back. I just moved into the neighborhood and my coffee machine was still wrapped up so when I asked Yelp for suggestions, I was pointed to the laughing bean. I walked in and the gentleman working there (owner maybe?) greeted me, was patient with my slow ordering style and remembered my name until I walked out the door. I got the blueberry scone: stayed soft until afternoon (felt like it just melted in my mouth) and didn't leave any gritty feels like other ones in this city. The sweet aspect is perfect, don't need to add jam and I didn't feel sugar sick after. I also got the blueberry cream cheese muffin and shared it with my nephew the next day. We both loved it! It was still so moist, the boy shoved an adult sized bite in his tiny mouth and didn't choke he ate the crumbs off the table which I had to post a photo of because this picky eater NEVER eats crumbs off the table. And I must say the smell of the tea totally piqued my senses. It's my fault I didn't check when accepting charges, but both times I was in a hurry, and running out of time after standing in a line up for a long time. Came in out of the rain.. This is a very nice neighborhood coffee place. Free Wifi and nicely layout. The chai latte was very tasty but I am not sure why they throw in so much cinnamon on top. I was expecting some sort of latte art but all I got was cinnamon abstract and maybe a little heart. They are tables with plugs at the back for those that want to camp out here. This review is going to be short...and sweet! Someone brought me coffee and a scone from here as a treat...and it was...yum! I got an americano with cream and jalepeno cheese scone? Basically my savory scone was amazing!! It's the best scone I've ever had! It was large, fluffy, moist and simply mouth wateringly delicious! Once I took a bite I couldn't stop eating it. The most recent time I went was with my mother. She saw their sign for cinnamon buns. When we got there, there were two people behind the counter very much in a conversation. We stood there for a few minutes until they deigned to look at us. They clearly were not pleased that we interrupting. All I wanted was a cinnamon bun to go. One of the servers went to get it, the one on the cash register continued to ask if we wanted it heated up. No, we didn't. I really didn't want to spend anymore time then I had to. Weirdly enough, we had to wait a handful of minutes before she handed us what we ordered. Of course, I wasn't surprised that they heated it up. They really didn't care how we wanted it. Poor customer service. I was appalled at their behaviour, as if it was too much to serve us. read more

In years past, I enjoyed my semi-regular visits to Laughing Bean: good coffee, fun atmosphere, and wicked clever signage. More recently, my visits have decreased from weekly to monthly. No evening hours? No big deal. Periodically feeling like my simple coffee order is an inconvenience for staff? Not so cool. I have kept going to support a local, independent business. Rebecca, the owner, changed my mind today. I realized too late that the honey bottle, at the customer station, was really sticky. After I washed my hand in the washroom, I mentioned it to the first person that I saw. Me: Excuse me. The honey bottle is really sticky. R: OK?! (Accompanied with a glare that convinced me that I had just won her idiot of the week award.) Me: Well, I just thought I should mention it ... R: (Cuts me off. Still with the glare and the angry voice.) Would you like to bring it over here so someone can wash it? At this point, I wasn't in the mood, but I also didn't wish further interaction. My office just opened up across the street and I want to support a local coffee shop (there's a Starbucks a block away) but the baristas here have been consistency RUDE! I think the manager made my drink today and when I double checked that she had made it with soy, which I paid extra for, she glared at me and sighed. She begrudgingly re-made my drink. This is my favourite coffee shop in my neighbourhood - maybe even in the whole city! I go out of my way to go here for my weekend morning coffee when I walk my dog, even passing a Starbucks on the way, because the owners and staff are great, the coffee is great, and it's got a great atmosphere. I really enjoy their espresso drinks, though they do great iced drinks too. Their grilled sandwiches are great (though at times a bit greasy), and the soup and bakery options are perfect for a light lunch. I love that they have seating for all types of cafe patrons - they've recently renovated to make an area in the back more useful for those with laptops (and the wifi is free!), and for those patrons who want a place to sit and talk or read the paper, there are large sofa chairs and bistro tables near the windows. I think this was a really smart way to do it so that there is always space for patrons who want to use computers and those who just want to chill and meet with friends. Laughing Bean has a great patio, which on sunny days is occupied by bikers, families, kids, dogs, and everybody else. They've been gracious enough to tolerate my puppy's barking from outside, and the owners (as dog lovers themselves) have jumped in to help me train her to wait patiently while I get my coffee and complimentary dog biscuit from the jar by the espresso bar. Do yourself a favour - drive past the Starbucks drive-through and pop in to Laughing Bean instead! You'll be glad you did! NB: also they have a large, clean wheelchair accessible bathroom stall (key is hung on the wall near the gelato case), and provide toys and books for kids to play with - see the shelf across from the bathroom door. read more

I really love this place because the staff is just awesome.. fun and quirky and friendly. The coffee is very good too, though it really is the ambiance of the place that stands out, thanks to the clever management who uses humour and neighbourly friendliness to win loyal fans. I have been going to Laughing beans everyday for the past 3 years, and I got a delicious mocha tailored to my liking each time. The staff is friendly, and caring to my needs. They have a good sense of humor, and the music matches all ages, but does not over the ambience. The owners put extra effort to promote events and holidays. There is friendly and community-type of atmosphere. The pastries are fresh, and there is a wide selection of sandwiches. It is worth the trip for a good cup of coffee and a muffin. I love Laughing Bean's coffee! Even though Starbucks is way closer to me by a block, I'll make the trek up the hill to my favourite local joint. Their coffee is ALWAYS hot, their coffee actually has kick and staff are super duper friendly. Pastries are simple, tasty and not complicated. When I walk into LBC I don't feel like I've walked into an university's library or study hall but like a friend/family's cozy kitchen. Visiting patrons are just as friendly and you can always rely on them for a good chat without getting weird, WTF look. Sure, its a little ecclectic, but I choose that over generic. PSST...they have free small coffee between 6:00am and 7:00am or something like that. I was not fully awake yet and could not remember when it is. I do remember being very confused when my medium coffee came out to be $0.25. Yes, twenty five cents. There is no reason to not go. read more

I'd been waiting to go into this place for weeks and finally did. The mannequins outside caught my eye on the bus every day. It was just far enough that I was too lazy to walk there, but I happened to be eating across the street one day and decided to check it out after. I loved the vibe here. I could tell that everyone working was in a great mood and there was a lot of laughter coming from behind the counter. I ordered some kind of mocha frappucino thing... (what do you call those if you aren't at Starbucks?!) They had a name for it, but I forget... They made it wrong about 3 times so it took a bit, but it was delicious and I was busy laughing at their jokes for the entire wait so it wasn't really a painful one. Atmosphere is relaxed and friendly. Decor is nothing special and neither is the food. Yet the humourous signs -- "sarcasm is free" or "unattended children will be fed a double espresso and given a puppy" more than make up for it. You crack me up! First, there's the mannequins who stand guard day in and day out, rain or shine hawking your wares and then there's the witches and other creatures of the night (aka Halloween decorations). For weekday meetings, with laptops tapping, to weekend happy-go-lucky East Vancouverites hanging out in the sun at the outdoor tables or nuzzled up inside on a rainy day, you feel comfortable hanging out at Laughing Bean. Coffee is first class in the "Any good coffee will do" category of coffee shops. And I love that they call their Americano a Canadiano. Why don't more coffee shops do this?
