I've been craving Spanish food for a long time, and my friend recommended Lo Nuestro Dominican Restaurant in Albany, NY. When I looked up their address, Apple Maps stated that the restaurant was closed today (Sunday, August 18th, 2024). So, I searched for the next best option, and Yelp suggested a restaurant in Crossgates Mall, Albany. Listed currently as Latino's Cuisine on Yelp is actually Lo Nuestro's 2nd restaurant! Formerly known as Latino's cuisine, the owners of Lo Nuestro has expanded their family owned restaurants and now occupies this restaurant and space in Crossgates Mall as their 2nd restaurant. Crossgates is a huge mall, so I used the directory map to find the exact location of the restaurant. It was the same restaurant my friend recommended! Lo Nuestro's SECOND location is located upstairs in Crossgates Mall, next to Pandora Jewelry and in front of the "Going, Going, Gone" Dick's Sporting Goods clearance store. If you're trying to avoid the mall and a lot of walking, you can park as close as possible to Going, Going, Gone and then go upstairs. Lo Nuestro is on the right-hand side next to it. As soon as I walked in, the food alone made me want to try everything pollo. There was a line of about five other customers ahead of me, Spanish music blasting in the restaurant a few tables and booths for friends and family to dine in. A dessert case with a variety of desserts and all the food you order is behind the counter in steam table pans. I ordered a large stew chicken (which they didn't have much left of), and I see why! (It tastes really good and was exactly what I was looking for). I asked the pleasant and English-speaking young lady (Franchesca) if she could give me small portions of both types of their chicken so I could try a little of both after she apologized for the near empty pan of stew chicken, and she kindly gave me small portions of each in my large order. Both were so good! I also did the same with the tuna pasta salad and the potato salad. While I've had better-tasting potato salad, (needed more seasoning or salt and less mayonnaise) it's still edible and delicious. (At the time of this writing, I hadn't tried the tuna pasta salad yet.) Their passion fruit juice is a little on the too sweet side for me but still great tasting. Nothing a shot of lemon juice wouldn't fix. At my grown age and being Jamaican , I'm just now starting to appreciate why everyone eats and asks for plantains, and the sweet plantains here are actually good. Would I come back like the young lady working the counter encouraged? Absolutely. She mentioned they are going to fix their listing on Apple, Google, and Yelp because they own both restaurants located in Crossgates Mall and on Central Avenue in Albany. This review is for the Crossgates Mall location. I had a pleasant experience, and the food did what it needed to do. I ate both potato salad and the tuna Mac salad after editing and now I am back to give an update, I enjoyed BOTH salads and I wished I had more. I licked the salad container clean. The furnishings are spartan but the food is good. Latino's Cuisine is located next to the Swarovski Crystal store above Lush and the Apple Store. I have visited twice and my favorites so far are the beef tripe, ribs, and spanish rice. The tripe is new to me. It is a fatty but flavorful sort of meat that has a interesting texture. The ribs are very flavorful when they have them. They had them the first time I visited and not the second. The Spanish rice is moist not dry and comes in generous portions. There is a nice selection of Latino beverages and domestic from pineapple flavored soda to sprite. The empanadas were ok but not amazing. The meal is moderately priced at around $12-$20 and I noticed a lot of Afro Latino folks visiting each time I was there which is always a good sign for authenticity. I go to the crossgates mall every once in a while. And i've never seen this place, so I stopped in for a quick bite to eat. The restaurant was clean and basic looking I walked up to the counter and there where 2 young ladies behind the counter talking in Spanish to each other the woman behind the register looks at me and doesn't say hello or can I help you so I point at a case with pre made empanada's in it and I said can I please have 3 empanadas and a potato ball please? I was completely ignored as the ladies just kept talking to each other, so I just turned around to leave, and she says, "What kind?" I say 2 beef and cheese, and before I can finish my order, the ladies just start talking again, completely ignoring me. This happened in between every item I tried to order. I should have left, but I was hungry. The employees I dealt with were extremely rude throughout my whole order. So I hoped the food would at least be good. Oh boy, I was wrong. They had a decent sized menu with all the food behind a glass case all pre made all of it looked like it was sitting for a long period of time anything with sauce had a skin film over it showing it hadn't been touched for some time. So, I just ordered from a heated case in front of the register that had multiple items in it. I got 2 beef and cheese empanads, chicken and cheese, a potato ball,and a sweet fried plantain with beef and cheese on it. None of the empenadas had cheese in them, and they were bland and dry as a desert. The potato ball was bland and dry also. And as for the sweet plantain it was same situation. I also got 3 drinks with a meal, and it all came out to a little over $21. what a huge disappointment and waste of money. Sitting here in the dining room with eyes closed saboriando (savoring) & daydreaming about the warmth of las playitas del Borinken. Comidita ON POINT! I came at open and the food was super fresh. The staff was so attentive and patient with me (decision hiccup-everything looked sooo good!) Arroz con gandules (rice & pigeon peas) y pernil (roasted pork) at Xmas time is an entire vibe. Added a pincho of pollito y tostones (fried chicken chunks and plantain) for the road. You won't be disappointed, I can promise you that. Sensory stuff: The music is loud ( I've got my headphones on as I write) so bring headphones if there are noise sensitivity. You'll have to speak really loud to order. Keep half an eyeball on the pernil meat, some spots of pork fat that can activate the yuck. I scoped the whole plate and picked them out before I started. Hope it helps. This is an excellent Latino resteraunt. I have been married to a Dominican woman for 46 yrs and know Dominican food. It is well seasoned and cooked to perfection. Meat is tender and falls off the bone. It not a fancy place but they know how to cook Dominican food. Will go every chance I get. read more

Closes early, talks behind for back in Spanish, rude, pushy always did I mention already they always close earlier than they say. The food is not worth the disrespect and the feeling you leave with. We did takeout while charging our car over at the Walmart a couple blocks away. We got the Mofongo con Camarones, tostones, maduros, and empanadas: pork, chicken and cheese. Particularly enjoyed the Mofongo and the pork empanadas. Will go again. read more

So for starters, their food is amazing. The food is the ONLY reason we continue to support their establishment. As far as their customer service, it's awful. They can be so rude and unfriendly and it makes for an unpleasant experience. Step up your customer service game and you will be damn near perfect!!!! read more

My partner's mom was from Puerto Rico, and an excellent cook. After my partner had the pernil and arroz con gandules (spelling?), he proclaimed it rivals his mom's cooking. That is high praise indeed. We're definitely going back for more. He said he wants to try the empanadas next. read more

Empanadas and pork were delicious! Prices were good, service is quick. Ethnic Latino food... so much better than the food court.

Finally a place where I can get traditional Caribbean Latino food. The arroz con gandules taste just like my grandmother's cooking. The mofongo was on point along with shrimp in garlic sauce. I'll definitely be back to try the pernil sandwich. read more
