We have been taking our Vizsla to Lather for at least eight years. We love the self-bathe option and the team at Lather is happy to supply everything we need including access to the drier. We have their professional groomers take care of our dog's nails and they always do a great job. Have two Chocolate Havanese dogs (12 and 11) - a traditional Havanese cut (very little) with xtra care to preserve their distinctive Havanese mustache and facial look. As they are silk dogs, we do brush them often to keep them neat. With little cutting needed we want the Sisters to look alike with mainly a bath and comb out. The key is to FOLLOW WHAT WE WANT. This was our second recent trip to LATHER . . . NEVER AGAIN. We told the groomer specifically if they found a mat and needed to shave it was okay as long as it was not visible (eg., belly). When we picked them up and paid $ 193.50 we found that one dog was completely shaved on her face, mustache gone, beard gone, even whiskers gone. We now have one Havanese with a traditional cut and one with a poodle face. The owner told me that they decided one mat under the chin could not be combed out so he decided to shave her entire face. We should have been informed and allowed to decide. There was no need to shave her entire face. Now that I read the reviews I can see that the owner is never wrong, always an excuse to protect his business. We did not ask for a refund. We were not at all satisfied; the key point is IF YOU WANT A CHOICE IN HOW YOUR DOG IS GROOMED, AVOID LATHER. All we wanted to hear from the owner was, yes, they made a mistake. No way. He said he did what was best for the dog - not his decision, not his dog! GO ELSEWHERE. read more

We were loyal customers for a long time, but this experience changed our view. I told staff I needed to use one of their self-bathing tubs the day after walking my dog in the woods at North Park. I specifically asked to use the tick shampoo they already offer, as a precaution. While my dog is on tick prevention, nymph ticks are extremely difficult to see--they're about the size of poppy seeds. I was told there would be an additional $25 charge because of the possibility that ticks could spread to other dogs. This was surprising and frustrating, especially given that ticks are ubiquitous in the Pittsburgh area and the business already provides tick shampoo for this very reason. Penalizing customers for taking responsible preventative steps doesn't make sense. Unfortunately, this policy--and how it was handled--felt unreasonable and inconsistent with the services advertised, and it's why we no longer feel comfortable continuing as customers. You can find a nice self-bath past Regent Square in Edgewood plaza at Pet Supplies Plus. Bring an extra towel as they often are out. You can't beat the price and they don't ask ridiculous questions. read more

This was not a SLIGHT nick. This is a permanent deformity as you can see on the photo. I did not use the cauterizing pen at all because the bleeding had stopped when I picked him up. The brownish discoloration is dried blood but this is not what worries me. It is the permanent deformity that is visible on the photo. I took my pups here today for grooming, and am beyond pleased with their service. One of my dogs is 13 years old, nervous, and had never been groomed before today. Lindsay worked with her, she let me stay for the whole experience - comforting her and taking breaks as needed. My other pup, who has been groomed regularly, was acting up a bit - most likely because I was there and usually am not. Elle (spelling?) was very patient (with both me and my dog, haha) and understanding and took it in stride so as to let me be present for my older pup. On top of it all both doggos look fantastic! After reading rave reviews (and some very harsh negative reviews) I was curious to see what my experience at Lather would be like. I've been having a friend of my sister's groom my dog, Marilou, at her house for the past three years, and when this friend was unable to do it recently, I booked a spot at Lather. Everyone was incredibly friendly on this Sunday morning, especially the owner - even after my dog got spooked and bit him on the leg not once, but twice. I was horrified because she is not a violent dog, however since she is a rescue sometimes she is threatened by men and goes on the defense. Jeff was really patient about it and didn't make me feel bad at all. Kalena did a GREAT job grooming her and Marilou turned out exactly as I wanted. I can't stop snuggling her! Plus she was done in exactly one hour while I grocery shopped. The place was very clean and well maintained. The price was double what I was used to paying, but that is a bad comparison considering my friend does it on the side at her home. I was happy to spend the money since there was such a great outcome. I also appreciated the reminder texts and phone calls about the appointment. I have been taking my dog to Dog Stop since I moved here (7 months ago) and his grooming always looked shabby at best; I was getting him groomed once a month. I got particularly fed up when I called to schedule his next appointment and after a week, I still have yet to hear back and and Teddy has already been groomed by the wonderful folks at Lather. The moment I walked in, I was already happier - I could see everyone and see how happy all the dogs were in the bath house. They were super excited to meet Teddy and listened to me when I said he needed to be cut really short, literally took me all of a second to describe what I wanted and they nailed it. We are staying at a place close to Lather while traveling with our dogs, and it looked nice, so took my older girl dog to have her nails clipped and to use the self wash. When you walk in, there is a waiting/holding area with a sign that says wait for help. There were 3 people working, 2 with pets being groomed and one checking someone out before taking another dog to be groomed. It took a while to be acknowledged, but to be fair, if your groomers are expected to groom appointments, show people how to use the self wash, wash walk-ins, ring up customers, take appointments on potty breaks and clean the self washes, etc....well, not sure how they expect prompt service or good attention paid to pets w/that business model. The woman who dremeled my dogs nails was very nice with my pup and also very nice about showing me how the wash works. While washing my pup, another woman with dark, curly hair was working on a small poodle either named Zeus or Apollo (poodle was there w/a bully type breed from the same household, so not sure which was which) and apparently they are better behaved when they come in separately. I get it, I really do (I'm an LVT) but the the poodle kept yelping & screaming & acting up, and instead of recognizing the dog's growing anxiety or that the dog needed a break, she kept grabbing it's head and moving the dog around roughly, loudly yelling "STOP" in it's face. At one point she was like, oh, so now you're going to try to bite? (Like the dog is telling you it's done or needs a break and you are not listening, what do you expect lady?). The bully is in a kennel in back scratching furiously at the door and throwing it's body against the door (maybe the dogs don't like being separated when they know the other one is close, or because he heard his house mate yelling?) and it's not like they can keep them together because it's one large room and everyone working is trying to do multiple tasks. Then as I'm washing my dog, once she was done with the poodle, they let the poodle and bully run around the shop. I almost stepped on the little poodle as I was trying to wash my dog and it kept jumping up on me and pawing at my legs. It's cold out now, so I had a long coat on, I was told I could throw it on the chair in the waiting area while I washed my dog, well, one the dogs peed on my coat several times in several places. At least it was a thrift store find and washable. The girl who helped with my dog's nails did apologize. At this point, the dogs were put away in a kennel in the back as they had peed and pooped everywhere (like maybe this is why the dogs were worked up as well?). Next a man came in and asked for a full wash for a black white doodle looking dog. This nervous dog had to wait in the tub for a bit while the groomer finished up other stuff, came and washed it, then the dog waited a while more soaking wet and still trembling while she had to take care of someone. Then a woman came in (also understand you can't control clients) to have her dog's nails done and use the self wash. The dog was literally screaming and an anxious mess as the groomer patiently did the dogs nails. My dog just keeps looking at me like what the hell and I'm trying to dry her as fast as possible and just get out. The woman (again, does not work there, just a client) then used self wash telling her dog she will beat it's ass if it doesn't act better. I could not wait to get out of there! Which also took some time as one of the groomers while busy doing multiple things had to find the time to run my card. Just a very chaotic experience overall. I understand that the dog's being groomed have multiple restraints, but having to constantly walk away leaving pet's on the grooming table with dogs running around (including a shop poodle who although nice enough would not leave my older girl alone and I couldn't give her a break from him because he was unleashed and roaming freely)....like I just wanted to self wash my dog, not deal with everyone else's dogs, you know? As a bonus I got to walk home in a coat smelling strongly of dog pee lol. I'm glad I used the self wash before scheduling a grooming appointment for my other dog, he will not be coming here.....most dogs already don't enjoy baths/grooming, but then to have it be chaos, hard pass. I feel the need to stress this bad review is not fully on the people working there, how the owner expects the groomers to be able to give the animals or the clients their full attention for any time period when they are supposed to do all the things is beyond me. read more

Had an excellent nail trim appointment here! My puppy was terrified when I tried to trim his nails at home and was upset for days after in that room, afraid I would do it again; he went in for 10 minutes at Lather and left with a huge smile (photo is AFTER if you can believe). The staff was kind and efficient even with the hubbub of lots of animals and drop offs. Biggest perks for me were 1) being able to make an appointment online, 2) dogs can play together in the waiting area (my puppy was infinitely comforted by one technician's big happy dogs that showed him he had nothing to be afraid of), and 3) sweet little bandanas as a free parting gift! Taco loves loves loves loves Lather bath house. They always take special care of him and he loves getting his bath there. Wide selection of products to use at the self-service dog bath stations, and we've never had to wait in line. Make sure you ask how to use the high velocity dryer, he gets a huge verify was a blowout every single time we go and looks just like a celebrity! We also go to Larry's Laundromutt up in Sewickley, but this is much closer to our house and just as competitively priced. AND a free bandana!!! Very nice vinyl waterproof aprons to wear, even with the most sudsy of baths you can leave without any water on your close if you're careful. It's very nice that they have the two door system at the front entryway, after tacos bath he likes to run around in the shop and it's nice to not have to worry about him running out onto liberty Avenue. I loved taking my senior dog to Lather! He was a hospice adoption and they were always incredibly gentle with him. I stayed the first few times to make sure it all went ok, as he wasn't used to being groomed, and after that I was confident dropping him off for his "spa day". He always smelled amazing afterwards and he didn't want to leave, he wanted to stay with the other dogs. The staff has always been friendly and polite, and you can tell everyone there really loves animals and takes great care of them. An all around great experience at Lather. My 6-month old Bernese mountain dog, Brody, was in desperate need of a clean-up and a nail trim before going to the Pittsburgh Pet Expo. After a bit of research we ended up at Lather. Brody isn't the biggest fan of bath time, but by the time I picked him up, he was excited as ever (and wearing a cute fall-themed bandana)! He was so soft and fluffy and smelled just like apple spice. For all of the services he got (full wash, de-shed treatment, and a sanitary trim) it was much more reasonable than I expected. They were also very accommodating; I didn't originally schedule a groom, but Brody really needed his paws trimmed up and they were able to add that onto his appointment. I love this place. Love the fact that I can take my dog for a nice walk and then take him for a little grooming time. I will say this is the best concept ever. It is devoted solely to dogs and people can rent out the tubs to bathe their dogs or your can make an appointment to have him bathed, groomed, and trimmed. I tend to drop him off since my dog hates baths and usually when I pick him up he looks incredibly handsome and with the cutest bandana around his neck! Another thing that I like is that they are completely open, there are no crates that the dogs are placed in with built in dryers like other places I have taken my pup to. This place uses hand held dryers, which to me is more humane and less scary for a dog that hates baths. Once the groomer is done with them, they are free to roam around the shop and make some doggy friends until Mom or Dad come. Lather is fantastic! I've taken my largest dog, a 65-pound Collie mix, there several times. He always looks and smells amazing and they do a great job trimming his very sturdy nails. Every time I come to pick him up he's running around playing with the other dogs and looks like he's having a grand time. I also took my 10 year-old rescue Min Pin there a few months ago to get his nails trimmed for the first time, and everyone was so sweet. He's a typical grumpy old man and it took three groomers to get his nails done - one to hold him, one to cut, and one to sweet-talk him. They were so great with him. read more

I've given this place a few tries but would not recommend it. First, it's a bit of a cluster with no front desk staff. Booked an appointment online for a Sunday, then receive a call to reschedule because they are "never open on Sundays." Then, arriving for the rescheduled appointment there is no record of it. I can look past this kind of stuff, especially to support a small local business, but I can't get past the way they treat the animals. Witnessed the owner physically bear-hug restraining two medium sized dogs while repeatedly YELLING "no" and "stop." Didn't try to call them down with treats or by being calm and gentle. If you take you dog here I strongly encourage you to stay in the lobby and watch them work. The only reason I'd give two stars is because the end results are good, you could also go and do the nice self-service baths if that's all you need done. My dog Kova is notoriously awful at having her nails trimmed. I have taken her to a couple other places to have them done and they have been really rough with her in the past. I had been fearful to try this place just based on my past experiences, however I was incredibly happy with the way they treated her! I walked in not realizing that they closed in 15 minutes, and they were super helpful and welcoming. They asked what I was hoping to get and were more than accommodating to trim her nails for me. They asked if she was good with other dogs, as they had others off leash there. Being the wild child that she is, I opted to keep her on leash so that she did not barrel over other dogs and furniture. They took her back and had her finished in less than 10 minutes. The great part about this place is that you can see what they are doing, unlike some other places where the dogs were taken in the back or out of sight, which makes me really uncomfortable. As expected, Kova struggled but they were very patient and talked to her the whole time. I will absolutely be back to have her taken care of again! I have been bringing my dog(s) here for years, and am absolutely appalled by the rudeness of the owner. We missed one appointment today, due to the weather and illness, and he implied that my husband and I were lying about having an issue with trying to reach them on their listed number. The irony of all of this is that I can count at least 5 separate occasions where they actually canceled our appointments, some even on the day of the appointment, and only ever got a thanks for understanding. When I expressed concern about the email response that my husband and I received from one of his employees, the owner basically told me it was a non-issue because it was an automated message and yelled and repeated himself over and over and over. He also hung up on me twice. I called the second time to reschedule the appointment, and he simply repeated that it's a non-issue, and that he doesn't understand why I'm so upset, and that it's an automated email. We will not be bringing our dog back here, or giving this place anymore of our money. We don't recommend that anyone else does either, because the customer service is terrible, especially from the owner. We have taken our dog(s) here to get groomed every 6-8 weeks for the last 5 years or more, and just like that the owner made it clear that he does not value our business. My husband and I really thought we had an excellent relationship with this groomer, until the owner ruined all of that, by telling me that he didn't want to hear my concerns, and that he didn't understand why I was making an issue out of the threatening email that we received, which also stated that we would have to pay a deposit to schedule any appointments moving forward. With the number of times they'd canceled our scheduled appointments , you'd think that they'd be more understanding of one last minute cancellation during a global pandemic, and that an owner would actually value his long-time customers. Our handsome pupper boy was in desperate need of a nail trim and gland expression, and I decided to give this place a try after seeing all of the stellar reviews on Yelp. It's a very cool space. It's different from typical groomers in that it's just one large open area, so dogs can roam around freely (assuming they get along with other dogs), and you can keep an eye on your dog being groomed (which is a nice option to have if you're a Type A dog mom like I am). They had comfortable seating in the front, and at one point a super friendly man (possibly the owner?) came by and offered us soda or water while we waited (which we declined, but that just added to the warm, relaxed, and welcoming vibe of this place!) Our dog's grooming was done quickly, and they did a good job. We did notice on the car ride home that he had some gland odor (probably a bit of the fluid got on his fur when they were expressed), so we had to rinse his back area when we got home to get rid of the smell (easy enough, but definitely not something that usually happens when he has had his glands expressed in the past). I'm sure it was just an oversight and they would've rinsed it there if they had noticed, but I did take off one star for this reason. Appointments can be made online, which is really convenient. I also like that you're able to schedule a'la cart services (like we did) if your pup doesn't need a full bath or groom. If your pup does need a full bath though, I love that they have a DIY option (they'll set you up with a tub and necessary supplies)....no more messy home baths! The prices are competitive with other groomers in the area as well. My handsome doggie and I will be back! read more

Instead, she was sent back to me soaking wet in her carrier fully traumatized. They never mentioned that they had injured/cut her, only that she wouldn't allow them to blow dry her. I got her home and she refused to come out of her carrier and hid. When she finally did come out, I noticed a big patch of missing fur and a 3/4 inch laceration on her skin. I will be calling the manager to find out what the hell happened and why I wasn't informed of her injury. NEVER AGAIN. read more

In my experience this place doesn't even deserve one star!!! I took my dog here regularly for almost a year however things started looking bad half way through when I noticed that there were always new faces then one day it happened to me my groomer quit very suddenly. We quickly fell in love with our new groomer though she was perfect and caring with our dog. Then on his last appt there 2 groomers quit unexpectedly and caused my groomer and the other groomer to have to pick up all the dogs for the day on top of there's and stay even later. The final nail in the coffin was when my groomer quit. I had had enough and reached out to the owner to inquire as to what was going on!!! I was left with extremely rude and defensive comments. Telling me it wasn't my business when someone left I explained it is my business when I want to know who is caring for my dog. He didn't get it whatsoever. Nothing but rude and condescending. Don't waste your money Jeff is the dog grooming owner equivalent of a slum lord. Now I need to get the word out bc a few days ago a poor miniature poodle went in for a grooming perfectly healthy and was picked up by her dog mom unable to stand due to a torn ACL in her back leg. It's so bad that she might need to be amputated. The owner of the dog simply inquired as to what had happened and asked for the very very high vet bill to be taken care of by Jeff the owner. She was left with nothing but his aggressive condescending womanizing attitude! He even laughed when she asked him to pay. The weens (my dachshunds )were smelling and looking raggy they clearly needed a good bath and a trim apparently so do the rest of Pittsburgh dogs because I called a few places and no one had an appointment for a week then I saw lather ...OH boy what a fantastic concept if you want a bath NOW I was so excited as soon as I hung up the phone I was on the way I was warmly greeted with a come on in and they lent me a leash in my haste I left with out one big free standing tubs you can walk the dog right in Jeff set me up there is a whole selection of shampoos and conditioners to pick from I chose smelly dog ... donned an apron they had and I was scrubbing those weens down easy peasy I said "can I borrow a thinning shear" instead I was handed a whole kit with scissors shears comb etc because I had two dogs I was offered two grooming tables Their high speed hand dryers had the boys dry in no time super sharp shears and I was off n running trimming and fixin their hair Jeff was so super nice he helped me dry they offer nail clipping my dogs are like kids they behave better for other people so Jeff did the clipping clean weens are good weens the shop also offers full on grooms with a month out appointment wise There are toys and bones for sale actually the bones are awesome all natural if your dog needs a bone this place is worth the ride. I am also impressed there were no upsales like flea products just advice on where to go buy cheaper WOW this is my new place for the weens do your self a favor why struggle to bath at home you will thank yourself and your back later and you will have a nice fresh pup. read more

Lather is truly as good as it gets! I was puppy-sitting and there was an accident that required a bath. I attempted to wash him at home, but knew right away that I should just go for a DIY bath at Lather. I was able to walk right in and get set up with a tub. The gentleman that set everything up for me did an excellent job explaining how to use the tub and sprayer, as well as all the soaps and such. Aprons and towels are provided, as well as dog treats. I like that the space is completely open and the staff is always helpful. Once the bath was complete, I was set up at a drying station and was able to hand dry my little buddy. Again, full detailed explanations on how to use the dryer was so helpful. The pup was even given a tiny (he's v tiny!) towel sling to wear around his ears, to keep his face from getting blown. And of course, no bath is complete without a new bandana. I'm not sure how the price compares to other options, but I believe my total was around $16. Well worth it for this experience, his comfort and me not having a wet bathroom to clean after! read more
