We were in the Wheeling area on vacation for the first time a few weeks ago. We happened to choose this restaurant for dinner one evening. The staff was excellent and helpful, and our food was excellent. Their outdoor backyard is delightful on a nice day. Thanks, all, for an enjoyable evening, and greetings from Baltimore, Maryland! Ps: we split the Mac & Rib panini, and the Crepes. read more

What a fun experience! The actual paper menu is entertaining with clever titles, the food selections are varied (there is an entire section devoted to crepes!), the food quality is superb. I had a very fresh apple peanut spinach salad with chicken and topped with a curry dressing - delicious. Hot drinks including French press coffee and chai tea-- yum. We sat outside on a back patio during lunchtime and enjoyed the warmth of outdoor space heaters. It was our first time dining there and we are already looking for an occasion to return. read more

Great food, excellent service, lovely outdoor dining area!! Reasonable prices as well. Very interesting things to look at inside.

We love Later Alligator! The decor and building itself is such a fun vintage laid back atmosphere. They have the best crepes. However, I really recommend getting the Bluesfest BBQ Pork Kettle Chips. They are to die for! Although inside is fun, I really commend sitting in the courtyard. Out back is such a quaint little sitting area. read more

Crepes are so delicious and environment is clean and welcoming! You won't be disappointed!

Been wanting to come here for a while. Finally, I made it. Enjoyed the strawberry freeze, with turkey, sandwich. It's a great mixture of flavors that I would would order again and not hesitate to recommend. The environment doesn't need tv's as there are many things in the walls to keep one entertained. Open until 10pm - bonus!!! read more

What can I say, the food was delicious, the service was top notch, the decor was cute and kitschy... I have grown up with relatives in Wheeling and visited my entire life. This was seriously my favorite restaurant ever. Side note, I am a picky, quirky, artsy type vegetarian, but my husband is none of these things and also loved his food as well. read more

Everything about this place is inviting! The food is so good, service is always friendly and atmosphere is great! Definitely recommend trying a crepe while you're there, they're all delicious!! read more

Hub and I stopped in for dinner Friday evening after a long drive from Greater Boston. We pass through Wheeling often when traveling to visit friends in Kentucky, so we are familiar with Later Alligator having dined here before in 2015. I'm going on record stating Later Alligator will be our go-to place in Wheeling henceforth! It is a swell joint with great food--amazing crepes, a wonderful staff, eclectic design aesthetic, excellent beer and wine choices, and all for a reasonable cost. Really, it's an ideal choice for a meal. The menu offers inventive fare from soup to nuts. Appetizers, sandwiches, traditional entrees, and the aforementioned crepes. Crepes are LA's calling card, and it's an option not to be missed! There were several fantastic choices (including vegetarian options). I opted for the Alligator Rock crepe: tomatoes, ricotta cheese, roasted red peppers, avocado and basil pesto. The crepe was beautiful, super light and perfectly made. The ingredients filling the crepe blended so flavorfully. I savored every delightful bite! It paired well with the Harpoon UFO Hefeweizen craft beer. Hub had a caprese press sandwich and a glass of Pinot noir. He was very pleased. Our server Rebecca was wonderful, a total pro, but also warm and friendly. We were seated shortly after arriving, without a reservation. I'd definitely make a reservation next time, as we arrived just after 7:30 and the place was filled with diners. I think if we had arrived earlier there would have been a bit of a wait. After dinner we split a fabulous warm Brie, walnut, maple syrup, and whipped cream crepe that vanished from the plate in what felt like seconds! Amazing! If you're in or around Wheeling, do yourself a favor and be sure to dine at Later Alligator! read more

This is a nice little restaurant. It's not a burger shop though. They have more eclectic menu items and a very wide range of options. My wife and I go here 2-3 times a year and have never had a bad experience. read more

Great find! Check out the wine specials! Nice outdoor patio. Nice stop after the West Spa.

Wonderful stopover on our road trip. Food was delicious and innovative, while also staying pretty cheap. Great service and nice staff. Can't wait to stop over on future visits. read more

Stop in here if you want to try something new and different or traditional comfort food offerings. Depending when you get there you may have a small wait. Not a very big place so it can get a little cramped if you're waiting for a table. We got there around 6:00 and waited about 20 mins. I ordered a half-crock size tomato basil soup. I liked it but didn't love it. My favorite part was the puff pastry alligator floating on top! Looking to try something new, I went with the Strawberry Briezze sandwich (freshly sliced strawberries, basil, jam and sliced Brie). The strawberry-jalapeño jam was super yummy! Wouldn't mind purchasing a jar of that! The only thing that would have made the panini even better is if the Brie was melted or at least softer. The clear winner at our table was The Mac-n-Rib sandwich! Messy bbq pulled pork topped with Mac n cheese! My son gave it two thumbs up! Our waitress was fun, friendly and full of energy! Wish I could remember her name. She was fantastic! Loved all of the antique Wheeling Steel decor on the walls and the hammered metal tile ceiling. Glad I saw this place on Yelp! read more

Great food and ambiance . Love all of the fun things on the walls. Service a bit slow but worth the wait

I am sure I have no idea why people are lined up at the door to get in. It's charming, friendly and i like the menu but that's where it ended for me. I had the hocus pocus sandwich. It was anemic and under seasoned. Brown avocado, flavorless cheese, grey button mushrooms and a bit of roasted red pepper. Bland and sad. It came with a quarter pickle that someone had stepped on and a few corn chips. I said something to the hostess and she said it was a house favorite. There must not be any other places to eat in Wheeling. I did like the tomato basil soup and the nice crouton that came with it. I tried Miriam's Greek salad. It was pretty good. The oil vinegar was heavy on the oil and the salad needed salt and pepper just like my "sandwich". I need a do over. I wasted an hour and am hungry. read more

Bit of a let down the second time around. We went out of our way to re-visit Later Alligator more than 2 years after our maiden voyage.... Perhaps it was me building this place into a shrine in my mind, or perhaps their service levels have slid, but either way I was dissapointed. While the food was still decent (they even made the kids sandwiches in little fish shapes), the service was ABISMAL, I mean really bad. I will give credit to our server, who was pregnant and working, but as a patron, please don't make me wait 20 minutes for a drink refill. We ordered our lunch, it was not busy, there is no reason our food should have taken more than 30 minutes to prepare and yet it did. Please Alligator, if you're reading, improve your service levels - your food quality and imagination is there, but your wait staff clearly isn't. read more

We were driving cross country and found this place on the Yelp app and thought it would be worth a shot. Wow, what a great find that was. This was probably one of the best sandwiches I've ever had. We found our way off the interstate and found some street parking. The inside of the restaurant was eclectic and really kind of cheeky. The decor was kind of random, but it created a nice atmosphere and sort of appealed to my no nonsense roots. I enjoyed their background music as well. We were promptly seated and offered the menu, where I was able to find about 10 things that would suit my sometimes picky palate. I ended up with the Strawberry Brie-Zze, a sammy with grilled (!) strawberries, brie, basil, turkey, and some strawberry/jalapeno jam. This sandwich was DELICIOUS. The bread was grilled perfectly, the ratio of meat to toppings was perfect, and the sandwich was constructed perfectly. I was sort of in awe of how good it was. I couldn't believe this sandwich was less than $10. My hubby got the Cheesy Mac & Rib, and he cleaned his plate too. Both sandwiches were served with a dill pickle and blue tortilla chips, which I could've done without, but to each his own. We split the Snapper crepe (nutella, carmel, pecans, whipped cream) for dessert, and I actually asked my husband out loud if I could lick the plate. For about $30, this was an incredible lunch. When we take this route to visit family, we will absolutely stop here again. The town of Wheeling is pretty cute too! read more

Food was surprisingly good considering this place was in Wheeling, West Virginia. My wife and I stopped while heading to Pittsburgh to do a show. They had crepes out the ass. Crepes stuffed with crepes and then some pretty funky cold medina ass sandwich offerings. We enjoyed what we ate, mine was a crepe with cheese and pesto. Review would have been 5 stars but the food took a long time and the server did not come back to check on us once. She seemed like someone that had waited tables there because the place is run by her family but she really would rather be a roadie for Melissa Etheridge or some shit. read more

We have always received good service here and the food is delicious! The waitress even remembered where we liked to sit. We enjoyed sitting in a spot so we could watch the people making the food:) yummy and delicious read more

We came in on a Friday night around 7pm. We were worried it might be busy, but luckily it was mostly empty. We were seated fairly quickly in the back section where just one other table was occupied. The waitress was at the table, so she had to see that we sat down in her section. We looked at our menus and decided on our food & drink orders. This usually takes me a long time, so it seemed weird no one had come to our table by the time I made up my mind. Then we realized that no one was coming. We waited approximately fifteen minutes for someone to come and take our drink orders. Or to explain a reason for the delay. But nothing happened. We finally gave up and left without eating or drinking anything. I looked for someone to talk to on our way out, but I couldn't spot anyone who seemed to work there. Not sure where they all disappeared to. Only giving two stars instead of one because the menu sounded good and I liked the interior. No idea how the food is and I am certain the service is lacking. Will not be back. read more

Wheeling desperately needs Later Alligator. This little cafe has the most extensive list of crepes I have ever seen, from the sweetest to the most savory. They're one of the few places in Wheeling you can find a decent cup of coffee, and you can get it in a french press! Oh, the glory. Don't forget to try the tomato soup with puff pastry! read more

A Yelp victory! We were driving back from Ohio to Pittsburgh and knew we would be hungry somewhere around Wheeling. A quick search later, we drove a minute or two off 70 and walked in from the cold rain to this adorably decorated, welcoming spot! The space is bright and kitschy, adorned with Wheeling Steel and other down-home, nostalgic goods. Divided into rooms, the restaurant manages to feel rather homey in spite of its size. We had a big variety of food - I had a sandwich (turkey with brie and apple butter - mmm), and my friends had a crepe (with a starter of the tomato basil soup topped with puff pastry) and steak salad respectively. We all enjoyed what we got quite a bit, and delcious craft brews for $3.25 only sweetened the deal. There was a bit of a wait that Saturday night. There was a film premiere at the theater across the street that night and the staff was, by their own admission, overwhelmed by all the customers. As we were not in a hurry, we were glad to see such a great little spot humming with activity -- and I'm sure that, on any normal night, service is likely fine. They were all in good spirits and checked on us several times, once we were seated. I can't wait to stop here again, to rest and fortify myself on another long drive. read more

Very good food straight from their own garden! Yes, that is right.. the vegetables and tomatoes were so rich and tasty, I knew they weren't store bought. I asked them if they had a garden.. and they do. To me that is an extra, big bonus star. My wife and I accidently stumbled in here on our road trip to Boston and both of us were happily surprised with a really tasty lunch. We had fresh garden vegetables, hummus, and chicken sandwich on a buttery croissant. To be honest, this food was better than most of what we found in Boston. So helpful hint: Eat here during the summer harvest and get those garden veggies. read more

This is a great place to eat in a uniquely Wheeling atmosphere. Escape the chain food options off the highways and enter a real neighborhood vibrant with locally owned businesses. Step into the future of wholesome food while enjoying a nostalgic trip down Wheeling's memory lane. Young (family friendly) and old, hipster, circle, or square- everyone will find something to love. The food details: fresh and plentiful food. Friendly service with many menu options including lots of cafe style drinks to get your coffee, chai, Italian soda, or beer fantasies on. Stop by for a bite to eat and it's worth waiting if a small crowd of like minded people have gathered for food just like you. Local businesses dream of lots of customers. Great menu - lots of options and variety. Rueben sandwich very tasty. Highly recommend.

Have been meaning to try this place since my family still lives in Wheeling and everyone talks about it... What a let down. The food was HORRENDOUS. Like someone previously already stated, my avocado/guacamole was BROWN...and so was my sister's...so it wasn't just a fluke. Why in the world would you serve an obviously bad/old thing of guacamole to a customer? The crepe was also overdone and there appeared (and tasted) to be Velveeta cheese or Kraft singles in it. It was really not good and I'm not a picky eater. I mentioned how disappointed I was to some friends and they said things have gone down hill which is a shame because Wheeling is really lacking in the "buy local" department. The service was very nice and friendly though - which is why I'm giving two stars instead of just one. read more

Random stop in WV was a terrific lunch. Our server Amelia was wonderful. Creative sandwich and crepe options.

I love this place! Notable: - I'm pretty sure it's the only place in town you're finding a crepe. - Dog Friendly (!!) so important to me when the weather is nice and this is the only establishment in Wheeling I've found that lets you bring your pooch to sit with you outside (insert side-eye to Uncle Pete's here.) - Mondays and Tuesdays they have wine specials - Super cute decor. I will update more as needed. I've probably been to this place 4 times and I really liked their spinach salad (although I'm surprised to see it on the menu in the middle of winter?) and their Wilbur Goes to Venice crepe, also good! read more

We were in town for a conference and stopped by. Service was friendly and quick. The food was amazing! I ordered a croque madam- let me tell you it reminded me so much of the ones I had in Paris. Please support EXCELLENT small business like this. Great food, very friendly service. All of the produce is fresh from local farms- this restaurants likes to promote and support other local small businesses. I am a big tea drinker, they had a great selection of Republic of Tea options. Get crowded so might have a wait at lunch / dinner times. They have a small bar with a few stools. I ordered the See Sam Run crepe with alaskan salmon, spinach, feta, cream cheese. It was so delicious. Food came out quick, the check was not bad. My crepe was about $10. This is a great little gem in Wheeling, WV. I would frequent this place if it was in my home town. read more

After hearing about one of West Virginia "101 most unique places to eat" from a friend who's been there a handful of times, we decided to make a day trip to Wheeling - 1 hour and 15 minutes away from where we live - and included Later Alligator as part of it. Great experience - very cozy, somewhat kitschy atmosphere; friendly customer service; and above all, delicious food! The three of us stuck with the entree crepes and an organic beer, with tomato bisque soup to start. Every dish we had was wonderful. Definitely will return. read more

Note: I did this review on 12/29/12 and accidently posted on my husband's Yelp page. We discussed the restaurant as we sat there and agreed it had lovely service, very good food and really good booze and we found it warm and cozy. What puzzled us was the name of the restaurant (saw no ties to alligators), the choice of menu options (why crepes?) and the massive quantities of "Wheeling Steel" stuff - it makes zero sense thrown all together. On the other hand, we had a lively conversation about it while we ate - maybe that is the idea? So, here is my original review: We just walked in on a snowy night, hoping it didn't suck. WELL. It surpassed all expectations. It was a terrific little gem of a place, as a matter of fact. We were greeted promptly and smilingly and given a great booth by the faux fire. Drinks were delivered quickly and they had two of my husband's favorite beers, Chimay and Flying Dog Raging Bitch, for those who want to know. I had a lovely Pinot noir. Dinner was crepes, delicate and delicious. Mandalyn (our waitperson) said they'd bring anything we wanted for the kids, even if it wasn't on the menu. Amazing!! Son ordered from the kid's menu and was perfectly happy. Daughter ordered an open face salmon with avocado and was happy too. Both had the "Pretty Please" dessert with 2 cherries and were delighted. It was a beautiful place with great service (thank you, Mandalyn, you are AWESOME!!) terrific food and drinks at a fair price. If you are a local, support them. If you are visiting, go for a terrific local experience. read more

I found this place using Yelp while on a road trip with my family (husband and 2 year-old son). We tend to eat local organic foods and prefer non-chain restaurants when we go out. I found this place during a search because they have one organic beer available. The crepe I had was ok--it was just a bit bland. I think I'd try something else next time (and yes, I'd give this place another try). My husband seemed to like his crepe--it was one of the many chicken crepes offered. I don't eat chicken so I had a lot less to choose from even though the crepe list was long. A vegetarian might have a hard time, but we didn't try asking for a custom crepe. The service was awesome! They were so nice and super kid friendly. They brought out little orange slices for my son (I think they might have been canned which I'm not crazy about, but it was great none the less). They also had a little cup with a lid and curly straw for him and fun little plastic animal-shaped utensils that we got to keep. They were so attentive to my son's needs and had a fairly good children's menu to choose from. read more

I wrote this review on Google 4 years back... If you are ever visiting Wheeling, give this place a try. The ambiance is great, outdoor settings are nice and the owners are super friendly. I was *surprised* to visit a place like this in Wheeling. As for food, first try the tomato basil soup ( a must ). Just awesome. Try one of their wraps, they are unique and very tasty. Their desserts are good too. read more

Love this place. Love the atmosphere, the decorations, and the food. Menu has some great selections you won't even find in bigger cities. Service is always great, food is always spot on. Booths are a little cramped but every building in Centre Market is lacking space. read more

It was my first time in Wheeling so I wanted to try some of the local favorites. Everyone I talked to recommended Later Alligator! When I initially saw them on Yelp, I was drawn to the cute name and a picture of tomato basil soup with an alligator puff pastry - needless to say, I decided to check them out! I'm sad to say my soup didn't have the alligator...LOL, but it was delicious! I'm a sucker for sandwiches with mac and cheese on them (I've only had a few, but if it's on the menu, it's what I get). I'd say that my sandwich was one of the best sandwiches I've ever had! I tried a strawberry mojito and it really was awesome (tasted just right!). One of the other diners that was seated close to me suggested the Earl Grey Martini, so I tried that too, since it seemed like one of their specialty drinks...yum! I'm not usually a big mixed drink person, but I fell in love with mine here. Staff was great; prompt and super nice. I thought the decor inside was fun, and the outside dining area was cozy and sweet. read more

There are not a lot of fantastic local restaurants in Wheeling, a victim of two shopping centers to the west and east that suck the life out of the city. But this little sandwich and panini joint, which happens to serve some great brews, is tucked into a historic commercial building next to Center Market. The interior is great as well. I like a place with some ambiance, and looking up and finding a wall full of Wheeling Steel trash cans is just great. Come here for the local charm and food. read more

Went in because of the reviews in Yelp. It was a Thursday night around 7:30 pm and felt like they were pushing us out as they started getting ready to close at around 8:30. While the server was attentive the food was ok. I ordered a cup of French onion soup that came out so cold that the cheese wasn't even melted. Probably could be a 4 star any other time of the day. Cold soup on a 50 degree day it's just unacceptable. read more
