    Train tour!

This tour is a must for anyone who's never done it before! Not only was this tour super informational regarding the history of Montana, but it was fun and entertaining! All of the staff working at Last Chance Tours are very friendly and accommodating. My friends and I thoroughly enjoyed our tour and would recommend it to anyone in the area!

Tour train in the Mansion District

On a warm summer day, how can you beat a one-hour outdoor ride around Helena? The tour train is a perfect way to get oriented to the city and to see where you want to go back and visit. The excellent experience started as soon as we settled into our self-selected seats when our driver/conductor/guide, Liz, came by to punch our tickets. She spent time finding out where we were from, but then really got into it with one of our party, a Power of the Helena Power Family. It turns out that our friend's family home is a spot talked about on the standard tour, so Liz and our friend chatted about local details. The three-car open train is packed with a diverse collection of riders: lots of families with young children visiting local grandparents. The open-air seating gives everyone enough space so that the kids can squeal and squirm without dominating the trip through town. It was a friendly, happy grouping. The narration is excellent, full of facts, fun facts, and probably some pure stories. We started off in the capital area, went though the ritzy areas, old-time miner/mining areas, and circuited back to the start. Liz was talking all the time, but her comments were interesting and never intrusive. The trip is inexpensive, too ($7.50 for adults. $7.00 for seniors). My personal perfect tour would be longer, although I realize children might not hold out for the 2 (or whatever) hours I would have enjoyed. And, my reservations are: 1) Liz was perfect, I don't know how the experience would be with another guide, and 2) our weather was sunny in the 70's -- also perfect. Hotter or colder might have made experience less wonderful.

(Crocs not included, I don't know why) They also have above ground tours. Part of the property is set up like a western town. Something that would grow up around a mine. Post office, apothecary, carpenter, blacksmith, etc, etc. All these buildings are set up with window displays but most are not open to the public. You just peer thru the windows. There is a memorial garden to miners. A mine yard with pieces of heavy equipment. The motorized lift, miners locker room, light room, information and equipment used in dry and wet boring, 3D representations of mines and more with information posted on the displays. You can walk up into the mine head if you are so inclined to see how the ore chutes operated. We spent about two hours here without realizing it. Very interesting museum. Staff are very personable, answered questions and suggested reading material for more on the subject. Very good, family friendly stop.

The guide was very (overly?) enthusiastic with some exaggerated "facts" (didn't seem quite right to me, so I researched a few things afterwards). Indeed Butte was a very important, crowded and rough place in the early part of the 20th century and the stories you will hear on this tour give a good flavor of that time, just know that it's more like watching a movie "based on a true story", than a documentary.

I decided to just rate my experience here and I must say it was a good one. In all honesty, I've never heard of the place until today. I have lived in Montana for 14 years now but for some reason or another, this place never crossed my radar. While taking a road trip to explore Butte today, my husband insisted we stop here. After a quick Google search on my phone, I saw we were only about a mile away but had less than 20 minutes before it closed (4pm on a Sunday). The younger man at the desk inside was very helpful and told us we didn't need to rush and could take our time. It was $10 for my husband, myself, and our two kids to enter. After paying, you walk through a short tunnel to the viewing area. Unfortunately the wind was insane today so we did end up rushing, but it was still a very unique experience and I am glad we decided to go. The color of the water is deceiving. You wouldn't guess it is full of toxic chemicals. The Berkeley Pit used to be an open pit copper mine. It has a depth of over 1,600 feet and is filled with over 900 feet of water. It is said to have the acidity of Coca Cola or lemon juice. The pit is filled with a combination of various chemicals, which help give it that greenish-blue color. It was interesting to stand there and imagine how it looked years ago. My kids really enjoyed reading about the history of the pit. We do plan on making another trip back there when the weather is better so we can fully fake advantage of that piece of Butte's history. I would definitely recommend!
