Butter chicken plate with brown rice
Anna B.

Next stop on my brother's and my Indian Food trial was Lasoon! It was so fun for us to be back on the UH campus!! We didn't have as much time today so a plate-lunch style, no formal dining service was perfect. We absolutely loved the flavor of everything we ordered. So fresh and flavorful, every dish was unique and rich. They don't have naan but they did have roti which was delicious. The portion size was perfect for a lunch but I imagine for someone looking for a slightly bigger meal it might be a bit small. I really want to come back on a day where they have the boiled egg curry as that is one of my favorite dishes. I'm not sure when they have that but, I would love it! I did notice that the prices have gone up since the last menu photos I saw on this Yelp page so I've added the ones I took while I was there. I loved the variety of selections and the servers were so nice and happy! For a quick, delicious meal I will definitely be back.

It's cool when you have colleagues who are foodies. You see, I work in a large office where you get to witness and smell the various foods that colleagues have during lunch time. Several weeks ago, a colleague mentioned Indian curry which piqued my interest as I do enjoy Indian food. The mentioning of eggplant and boiled egg curry really got my attention and I just had to investigate. Luckily, several colleagues were going to Lasoon, that specializes in Indian and Nepali cuisine, so I jumped on the bandwagon and ordered what was well liked amongst my colleagues. I have never been to Lasoon but found out they are located inside the University of Hawaii inside the Paradise Palms Food Court. They opened in Aug 2018 that also offers vegetarian options. One of my colleagues just raves over the boiled egg curry which I've never had before. To be frank, I've never heard of boiled eggs in curry dishes before, so I just had to give this a try. Follow them on IG for their daily specials, which lists their proteins and sides options. After submitting my order, I waited patiently for my colleague to return. THE VERDICT: I do understand the "Curry in a hurry." concept as this business is in the university and this grab-and-go carryout food exceeded my expectations. I'm no expert in Indian cuisine but I do appreciate the various spices used for their curries. Although this dish sounded odd to me, the boiled egg curry (Thursday special) works. Your mouth is familiar with the texture of boiled eggs, which are sliced in half lengthwise and cooked in a powerful curry sauce. For my palate, I didn't find the heat powerful, and this dish was just right for me. For those who know me, I'm not a fan of long grain rice but do like Basmati rice with curries. Solid dish. I also ordered the butter chicken which was okay but nothing to write home about. Chicken thighs are cut in large chunks and cooked prior before adding them into the curry sauce. I did appreciate the amount of food served but the flavors didn't really seep into the chicken. For the sides I sampled the cabbage, chickpea, and okra (also Thursday special) and I enjoyed both the cabbage and okra. Food was tasty and good volume served here. I also got their samosas, and I reheated them in the toaster oven and work and it was pretty good for fast food. I also got extra plates to surprise my family and they really enjoyed the food. Favorite niece by default and favorite nephew by default both commented on the tasty food from Lasoon and gave thumbs up. I did another attempt with Lasoon and sure didn't disappoint. This round we tried the lamb curry that was a winner. Most pieces were tender and flavorful. Loved the okra so it's a plus to order on Thursdays. I also got the spicy boiled egg curry that satisfied my tummy. Tip: reheat the roti and samosa for optimal quality. Absolutely satisfying. Overall, pleasant experiences at Lasoon where I'm game on getting their food again. I don't go to the University but luckily work with colleagues who appreciate good food and patronize Lasoon regularly where I get to submit my food order and have it delivered to my desk.

Spicy egg (boiled). It was too spicy for me...

I tried this place through a friend several days ago. It was very reasonable price and and the volume of food was amazingly large. We bought 3 boxes and ended up eating it for another meal. I enjoyed the curry lamb more than the chicken. The flavor was good. I also loved the side vegetables. They also have this pancake that goes well with the curry. For the price of $10+ it was very satisfying.

Lasoon has finally reopened after the pandemic have hit them really hard. Surprisingly they are still offering around the same prices when they last opened. It is located on UH Manoa campus at Paradise Palms. A must to get from their menu is the butter chicken plate and I can guarantee that you will buy another butter chicken plate for later AND the prices are amazing and relatively cheap which is great for college students and those who are on a budget like I am

Went back this week to try their Buttered veggies and Chicken Curry this time.

Omg I had to go again this week. The craving is bad for Indian/Nepalese food. This time, I went to try their Chicken curry. I tried a sample of their Spicy fish, and lets just say that I wouldn't be able to eat it at Pearlridge, but probably take my time at home with an antacid. It was good, but my stomach would kill me. Thank you for letting me try it though . Is there a list of what the daily specials will be for each day? I saw someone post boiled eggs and I want to try it. I did buy my usual 2 samosas tried their buttered veggies. But they ran out of the momos but that's a good thing cuz when we went today, there was a line, which shows that the food is gooooooooddddd

Spicy squeeze sauce to enhance the heat level!

What fresh, high quality and tasty Nepalese dishes to choose from. Got the lamb curry plate w/2 sides. Got the cabbage and spinach selections and they were flavorful. There were beautiful bite sized no-fat lamb morsels in the curry. Its flavorful and not spicy. There is a spicy squeeze sauce at the counter that I squirted that made the heat factor perfect for me. Also, it comes with a crispy and wonderfully moist naan/roti bread. Its located in the Paradise Palms food court on the UH Campus. Its air-conditioned with lots of tables. The staff are super friendly and helpful. They take credit cards. Want to try the much talked about butter chix next time.

Vibrant butter chicken with side of lentil and spinach. Sample of beans in middle.
Jim W.

What a vibrant display of color and flavor. Lots of meat pieces in their curries and chicken stews. I got the butter chicken plate with spinach and lentil sides, wonderful. Not overly spicy and easy to eat. There is a liquid spice bottle you can add to your meal to make it hotter, but the heat overall was good for me. Nothing overly spiced, oily or salty, felt good after I ate my meal. Meal came with roti, a crispy flat bread, so flaky, crispy, so toasted and so satisfying. Had their refreshing watermelon drink made out of real fruit with my meal and a sweet creamy mango lassi for dessert. Its located on the UH campus in the Paradise Palms food court. They take credit cards. They serve their meals in compostable containers and forks. Good place for a quick hot meal. Food worthy to be served on a family table.

They dont do fancy-schmancy stuff with a shaving of onion over the top of half an entrees worth of food then drizzle the plate with a design and smear it before charging you an arm and a leg. No sir. This place feeds tou and feeds you well. The serving size is enough to have you waddle down the steps and out to your vehicle. I ALWAYS fill the table with food, even when it is just me dining in. Freezing the leftovers has become a magical part of the experience. From the Samosas to the Momos (dumplings) to the tikka masala. I had a BBQ chicken on the bone (tandori) and it came on a hot griddle with onions carrots, green squash and tomatoes. The garlic naan is so delicious, but dip it in that sauce that coats the tikka masala and you will thank me later. The mango smoothie (Lassi) is amazing everything. They have 4 areas to sit in: Main dining area, balcony seating. An area that I will call the inner courtyard and a brightly lit room right off the courtyard (which is where I like to sit so my photos come out better lit). There really isn't a bad choice. Parking is abundant right outside in the pay lot, but we have found parking nearby for free. The service here has never been less than as amazing as the flavors upon the table. Local or tourist, I highly recommend this place to all.

Spice Up your life!…read more Yeah.....sorry no Spice Girls at this restaurant (though my mom did tell me there are a variety of Indian restaurants in London). NOTES 1. BYOB. The restaurant does provide a wine opener (if you haven't brought your own) and glasses. 2. Parking available in the lot behind the restaurant. The "entrance" to the lot very nondescript....its kind of like going thru a large "portal". Signage is great, but there is a sign for parking.....just be aware when traveling East on King St. 3. The restaurant is cozy, not too small, but not large. There were two parties of 5 and 6 people, respectively, that were accommodated fairly easily while we were dining. 4. I was in a group of 4 that ventured for dinner last month. After perusing the menu (we didn't take very long since we were hungry), we ordered for the table: Garlic Cheese Naan Vegetable Samosas Chicken Momo Lamb Boti Kabab Tandoori Chicken Wings Butter Chicken Chicken Tikka Masala The food was incredibly good....or, since we were so hungry anything tasted great at the moment for dinner. Nah, it's the former. The dish that disappeared and was completely devoured was the Butter Chicken. I absolutely loved this! So good. It paired well with the garlic cheese naan. We also enjoyed the Chicken Tikka Masala, Lamb Kabab, Vegetable Samosa. We all thought the Chicken Momo was just "ok". We'd probably skip this and try something else on the next visit. SERVICE The staff is friendly and patient. They checked on us regularly throughout the meal. I appreciated that they loaned us their wine opener (since we had forgotten to bring one). BOTTOM LINE A satisfying first time experience. We'll be ordering the garlic cheese naan and the butter chicken on the next visit for sure. Recommended.

Every dish delivered layers of flavor rather than just heat, with spices like turmeric, cardamom, and tamarind working together instead of competing. The curries were rich and silky without feeling heavy, with tender pieces of meat and vegetables soaking up sauces that ranged from gently creamy to bright and tangy. All dishes were comforting, slow-cooked depth you only get when it's been simmering for hours, and the garlic naan came to the table warm from the tandoor, slightly blistered on the outside and soft inside, perfect for scooping up every last bit of sauce. Definitely returning customer's!

We requested that our dishes be prepared with a milder spice level, which turned out to be a great choice because we were able to fully appreciate all the wonderful spices and flavors. We also ordered the fish tandoori, which came in a flavorful curry sauce that my family absolutely loved. As a special treat, the chef prepared another fish dish for us in a coconut curry style. The taste was immaculate--rich, savory, and incredibly satisfying. We couldn't stop dipping our stuffed cheesy naan into the curry sauce. None of us wanted that dish to end--we wished we had ordered more! A nice bonus is that many of these special dishes can be made upon request. Just contact the restaurant ahead of time, and they will gladly prepare them for your visit. Our servers were fantastic as well. They constantly made sure we were taken care of, refilling water, bringing extra napkins, and providing boxes when needed. With the new décor in place, the restaurant feels bright, welcoming, and inviting. It is a smaller space, so tables are fairly close together, but that only adds to the cozy atmosphere--you might even make friends with fellow diners. Overall, Cafe Maharani continues to be my go-to spot for authentic Indian cuisine!

It's a small restaurant that has the maximum capacity of 15-20 people guests. Each appetizer's portion can be shared with about 2 people (if you don't want to eat too little of each serving).
