I was visiting Miami for less than 24 hours, and I made it my mission to try a Cubano sandwich on my trip. I did some research, and Las Olas Cafe came up in multiple recommendations. Located a couple of blocks off a major road (Washington Ave.), Las Olas Cafe felt like a hole-in-the wall neighborhood joint - a team of off-duty police officers were enjoying their dinner inside the restaurant, and families were eagerly lined up at the to-go window outside the restaurant. As I waited in line to order, I perused the menu, which included breakfast items, coffee, and a variety of sandwiches. Even though there were only a couple of customers ahead of me in line, each meal was made-to-order before the next order was taken. This meant that the staff prepared about half a dozen coffees, a couple of smoothies, and several meals before it was my turn to order. When I finally placed my order for a Cubano sandwich, I waited about 20 minutes for my food to be prepared. My sandwich was served piping hot, and I eagerly took my food to go so I could enjoy it at the beach nearby. Despite the wait (about an hour from the time I arrived at the cafe despite the short line), my food was delicious. Quite a few friends had told me to check out this place for breakfast. I already eaten elsewhere, but my group of friends want to check out the spot and maybe grab a snack or two. It was definitely worth the visit, even if for a moment. You can either order at an outside window or at the register inside where there are several dining tables. They were full when we went, so depending on when you go, you might want to prepare for a takeout experience. As I had said, I had already eaten, but I was delighted to see a mango creme brulee on their menu. It came in an adorable cup, so when everyone had gotten something and we decided walking, I was excited to dive in. It was scrumptious. Initially it was a bit confusing why this is extra, but it made sense when thinking about Cuban food which generally doesn't have this kind of veggies. And it comes with coffee by which they mean espresso, but I changed it to Cortadito because I love me some Smokey bold Cuban Cortadito! It was strong in the best way, and fragrant. Add un poco de azúcar and you're off to the races! Wife commented her croissant was much better than more expensive bakery we went to the prior day, and iced coffee wasn't too watered down (ask for little ice and sugar) like most iced coffees we've had in Latino cafes so far. Outside seating was pleasant though you may have local uncles smoking a pack at the next table but wasn't bad w/ the breeze & shade. Best Cubano sandwich ever! So fresh & perfectly toasted. Their green sauce is so good too. The ladies at the front were pleasant and took orders quickly. There is actually two spots to order from, there is a window and you can walk inside as well. There were tables and chairs set up to eat inside and outside. I also ordered a pan con lechon which had so much fresh meat in it. The meat was very moist and tasty. Prices were very good for the size of the sandwiches! We were hoping to get some local food while in Miami and quickly found that most of the restaurants around Ocean Drive and the more walked areas were heavily "catered" to tourists, meaning that they were simply mass produced and not very authentic, so when we found this place, albeit a bit of a walk, it turned out to be exactly what we were looking for. It's a small cafe with an extern counter for ordering, or inside with seating; They are clearly frequented by locals and have a menu great for lunch, breakfast, or snacking. We ordered a Cuban sandwich to try, some tequenos, an empanada - we really enjoyed everything; it came with a few sauces, which had a ton of flavor and nicely complemented the combination of bread and meat. We just wish there were more places like this around the area as it seems to more accurately represent what people in the area actually prefer to eat. read more

Whenever I travel on a cruise these days, I try to get to the city of embarkation the night before so I don't have any undue pressure the day of the sailing. Seems most ships I travel on these days pull out of the Port of Miami, and so several times I have flown in the day prior to. This time I was leaving on the Norwegian Cruise line's Breakaway, and so my friend, Michael and I decided to stay the night before in the Avalon Hotel in South Beach. South Beach cracks me up. When I was a young boy, my grandparents used to go there for the Jewish holidays and celebrate Rosh Hashanah or Yom Kippur at one of the many, many fancy hotels that used to be down in that area. Everybody there was Jewish! Then suddenly in the '70s, everybody took flight from that area and it became a ghost town. You could not give those old hotels away. Now you walk along the beach and it is one gorgeous Deco hotel after the other. Where you could buy a whole hotel for $10,000, now would cost $250 to stay for just one night in a room. The Avalon is a cool Deco hotel right there on the strip. While I was waiting for him to arrive from LA, I decided to take a recommendation and go get some lunch nearby. I asked my receptionist at the Avalon where would be a place I could go that is walking distance and not a tourist trap and he recommended Las Olas. He said it's the real deal and I needed to order a Cuban sandwich, which I have never had! The walk from the hotel was less than 5 minutes and there was Las Olas, sitting on one corner. When you step inside, you could swear you were in another country. Not a word of English is spoken and everything on the menu and all the signs are in Spanish. Even when I asked one of workers a question in English she was not able to understand me. It had a a charm to it, as if I were in Spain or Cuba or a Spanish-speaking country. Sometimes it's fun to be the minority. Gives you a whole different perspective! Anyway, although they had really nice looking trays of hot cooked food, I decided since it was lunch and based on the recommendation of my hotel receptionist, I ordered their Cuban sandwich. That sandwich had everything in it that I should not be eating. Pork, cheese, lots of fat and bread and absolutely delicious! LOL The Cuban sandwich was quite large and at first I thought I might only eat half and take the back to my room, but as I continued to bite into this delicious concoction, I suddenly realized that I had eaten the whole thing. I did notice that Las Olas is also very popular for coffee and snacks. Besides their inside restaurant, I noticed they had an open area where one could walk up and order a hot cup of coffee. It's it seems they are known for their espresso and people were lining up for it. After my tasty but fattening lunch, I walked back to my hotel for a nice afternoon nap. When I woke up with my full belly, I sat down in front of the hotel and did my infamous guessing game as people of all types and ethnicities and ages strolled by. You will marry the 5th person that walks by, the 10th person that walks by is a murderer, the 4th person that walks by Is in love with you, etc. It kept me busy until Michael arrived that evening and we enjoyed our dinner. South Beach is certainly different than it was when I was a young Jewish boy. Instead of the sounds of Yiddish and the smells of matzo ball soup, now you hear the sounds of Spanish and the smell of Las Olas' Cuban sandwich. Do yourself a favor, and next time you are in the area, stop by and enjoy this local establishment that seems to be the real deal! read more

We ordered the cubano bowl and the pork belly bowl. They were not exactly cheap, on par if not a little bit more than the 'tourist' spot. The bowls were like $16-17 ea. The Cubano bowl was tasty with quite a bit of meat. The pork belly bowl tho was a major disappointment. Basically is 2 pieces deep fried pork belly and slices of avocado over white rice. The pork belly was so crispy fried that it could not be cut thru with the plastic knife provided. One could not bite thru the skin. The pork belly was definitely in need of a sauce or any kind seasoning. The ingredients on the bowl did not go well together. Based on the price and food, i probably won't go back. read more

I've been coming to this restaurant for years and have always enjoyed it -- it's a well-known spot that's been around since 1995. Unfortunately, today's experience was terrible. I arrived around 9 a.m. on November 11, 2025, and was assisted by a young lady with a nose ring. I ordered eggs, bacon, potatoes, and an orange juice. After I paid and waited for my food, she came back to tell me they didn't have bacon -- and she said it in a rude way, like she really didn't care. She offered me ham or sausage instead, but I don't like either of those options. When the food finally came, I received two very small pieces of sausage even though I never agreed to that substitution. On top of that, they forgot my orange juice. I went to the bar to ask about it, and the staff just said "okay." I went back to my seat to wait, but no one ever brought it to me or even called me to let me know it was ready. Throughout the entire experience, the lady never apologized or offered any kind of refund. She just repeated, "no bacon, you can choose ham or sausage." The lack of courtesy and professionalism was very disappointing. In the end, I left the food and walked out. It was a disrespectful and frustrating experience, and sadly, I don't think I'll be coming back. read more
