I came here intentionally looking for shrimp burritos. I looked up shrimp burritos and Yelp lead me here however they do not make shrimp burritos and doesn't accommodate sadly. Normally when seafood is present on the menu the kitchen won't have a problem making the request but this establishment didn't have burritos at all. So we decided to try something else and I ordered a mango margarita. My husband enjoy his quesadilla and my shrimp empanadas were different from what I expected. They were nicely fried just not sure what kind of cheese they used since the texture reminded me more of cottage cheese. I love my mango margarita it was super fresh and I enjoyed the atmosphere. I would for sure come by for drinks and to try some other dishes. The only reason why I gave 4 stars and because I was mislead and really wanted a shrimp burrito :(. read more

Mariscos Las Islitas is an authentic Mexican seafood restaurant located in the Concord Corners strip mall near the corner of Concord Rd SE and S Cobb Dr in Smyrna. It's a straight shot (10 minutes) down Spring Rd SE (which later turns into Concord) from Cobb Pkwy, SunTrust Park, and the Cobb Cloverleaf (I-75 and I-285 interchange). You can find these types of restaurants on Buford Highway (e.g. Mariscos El Veneno, Mariscos El Malecon) and in Gwinnett County (e.g. Mariscos La Riviera Nayarit). There's actually another Mariscos Las Islitas location in Norcross. These restaurants are all very similar. They have big spaces that can accommodate large groups, casual and lively atmospheres with TVs and live music, and sizable color menus with helpful pictures of all the seafood and other dishes they offer. Las Islitas is on par with other Mexican seafood restaurants I've tried around town. It's A-OK. The restaurant is quite spacious and features an open kitchen, bar, TVs, a dining room that includes booths, tables, and high-tops, and a stage with huge speakers and party lights. It's definitely equipped to handle big bashes. The interior is clean and the business is relatively new having opened in 2016 (I believe). When we dined here, Mexican music was playing over the speakers and it was loud. The bar serves all sorts of tropical, fruity, icy, and fun-looking cocktails and other alcoholic beverages. They serve beer, margaritas, and tequila too, of course, along with cognac, rum, vodka, and whisky. The kitchen serves all sorts of seafood and seafood platters. Examples include raw oysters on the half shell, shrimp empanadas, ceviche, seafood cocktails, paella, whole lobster, whole fish and fish fillets, mussels, shrimp, crawfish, and seafood soups. Outside of seafood, they also offer chicken and steak skillets, surf and turf, and other Mexican cuisine like tacos, burritos, quesadillas, and even breakfast food. The food prices are comparable to the competition in the Atlanta area. Expect to spend about $15-30 if ordering a seafood or steak entree. We visited with a group of six on a Thursday night and we were the only customers in the building at 7:30pm. More customers showed up after 8:30-9:00pm. Seating was a bit awkward for us because we sat at two round tables that had been pushed together. I don't think this place has any square or rectangular tables except for the high-tops near the stage. On the house were some thick and crunchy tostadas, ceviche (this version was made with only fish and vegetables -- no shrimp or other type of seafood), and a very spicy tomatillo salsa. I'm pretty sure the tomatillo sauce had some fresh habanero and/or jalapeno in it. It brought the heat. There were also three or four different kinds of bottled Mexican hot sauce at each table. I went with a half dozen raw oysters for $7.95. You can also get a dozen for $14.95. The menu didn't specify where these oysters came from, but I'm guessing they were Gulf. Instead of coming with cocktail sauce and mignonette, these oysters came with a bunch of small lime wedges on top. The quality of the oysters was basic (expected) and fine for the price paid, but I've definitely had bigger Gulf oysters at several other places. It would have been nice if the oysters came with cocktail sauce and mignonette, but since they didn't, I used hot sauce to make up for it. For my entree, I ordered the huachinango (whole red snapper) al ajo (cooked with garlic) for $17.45. Along with snapper, Las Islitas also offers mojarra (whole tilapia). Both fish can be grilled "al natural" (plain), al ajo, or a la diabla (spicy). The snapper was delicious. If you order al ajo, they put a lot of minced garlic on one side of the fish. It almost looks like a coating or batter. The fish was nicely grilled, meaty, and flavorful, mostly thanks to all that garlic. Sides on the plate included a simple salad (iceberg lettuce, cucumber, tomato), an orange slice, a buttered and toasted roll slice, and a serving of Mexican rice that contained veggies like carrots and corn. If you're going to order fish, I recommend ordering a whole fish with bones as opposed to a fish fillet with no bones. It tastes better. One of my friends ordered a fish fillet and the difference was night and day. My snapper was way more flavorful. The only downside to ordering a whole fish is having to pick through all the bones, but the tastier meat is worth it. Service was good. Our bill (party of six) included automatic gratuity. read more

Las Islitas is a Cobb gem. I love their large portions and drinks. They're also my go-to place for ceviche. I usually get the camarones or the mojarra frita. If you're looking for the best fried red snapper you've ever tasted, look no further! This is our go to location for fresh, fried fish. They make it to order and it can come in three ways - plain, garlic or spicy. It's full of flavor! The only problem is wishing it came with more of the side of rice. We add on another serving. We also enjoy the ceviche as an appetizer. When we use to dine-in, the service was great. Took me a while to find this place on Yelp, I guess the named changed to Las Islitas. I had a blast here last night with my family. They have a very large and bar plus a state where they must do live music on weekends. They offer a wide array of alcoholic drinks. My dad got a beer and I got a cantarrito. It's a drink served in a clay pot with tequila,orange juice, freshly grapefruit juice (or soda), lime juice, salt. They do start you off with tostadas and chopped mixed ceviche (raw fish and shrimp cooked in lime juice and spices). It's a little bowl but you have plenty to get an idea of what to expect in terms of the flavors of the restaurant. Once you consume that they'll keep bringing tostadas to go with your meal (these are baked tortillas that you can break into chips with your meal). We got oysters on the half shell and they were great. We also tried the ceviche on a tostada which is raw seafood (shrimp) cooked in lime and spices. My sister loved the shrimp ceviche but I thought it was too spicy. My sister got a cocktel de camaron y pulpo which is a shrimp and octopus cocktail served in a large chalice with tomato juice and lime juice. She thought it was made just right. Tasted very fresh. My dad got the caldo 7 mares which is a seafood soup with everything but the kitchen sink: fish, octopus, crawfish, shrimp, crab legs, muscles, and scallops. He ate every last bite. I got the paella which is a seafood stew cooked with rice along with all the seafood choices you could ask for: shrimp, crab legs, muscles, clams, scallops, octopus, and fish. It was just the way I like it, not soupy but rather well seasoned chunky rice. Overall we liked every plate we ordered. FYI, service is very very slow. If you can get past this, you like this place. "It's national Paella day, lets go get paella" Thats how our visit to Las Islitas started. Easy to locate, plenty of parking, lots of seating. WHAT AN EXTENSIVE MENU!!! I really had to stay focused on the mission....PAELLA! So first a sangria to help me focus! It was perfect, not too sweet, not too tart. Then I was able to order the paella. Soooo glad I did. It was LOADED....I mean loaded with seafood and the cluster of crab legs placed on top was a welcome bonus. I ordered the small and it was such a large portion, 2 people could easily split. We love seafood and always scout out places to get fresh, tasty shrimp, oysters, crab, etc. Mariscos has an interesting exterior with a cartoon lobster and a huge banner for chicken. It's in a quiet shopping Plaza behind the Wells Fargo Bank. You'll miss it if you're driving too fast! When we arrived the live mariachi band was playing. It was like we (Black Americans) had intruded on a private party! I think the staff was surprised to see non-Hispanic patrons. I'm from NYC so eating at Latino places is common. Money is green last time I checked!! Either way we were seated - after they found an English speaking server. Sort of odd - it's 2016 in Smyrna, Georgia but I digress. This is another of those "How did I not know this was here and how good it is?" Moment. Admittedly, the Buford Highway area can be considered the most interesting and diverse concentration of authentic ethnic eats. When you find something this different and authentic OBW(tm) (Off Buford Highway) it's fairly noteworthy. Atlanta and in particular OTP are rife with decent basic family Mexican restaurants. In some ways those restaurants are a bit like the army of allegedly different Chinese take out/delivery places. The menu's are all basically the same and the food is all the same. Sure some have a work or grill guy or gal that's a little better at this, or a little worse at that. In the Mexican world the refried beans all look and taste the same. The rice is all the same, everything comes with a server holding your plate with an Iron Workers teflon mit because somehow screaming, ridiculously hot plates is an indicator of authentic (read: non-gringo) Mexican food. Long live the enchilada and the Texas margarita. Nothing wrong with this, by the way, but it's chalked up by many to be "real" Mexican. It ain't. It's about as real Mexican as Domino's is real Italian Pizza. Las Islitas is located on the northeast corner of S. Cobb Drive and Concord Road SE in Smyrna in a nondescript mini-strip mall. It's incredibly easy to miss this space, so look carefully. The parking lot is tight and at busy times it can be difficult... but preservers. You will be rewarded. You enter the restaurant to high ceilings, a little bright and definitely clean but with that vibe of an ethnic restaurant. There is a 10-12 seat bar in the back, but didn't check that out this time as we could get right to a table. There is a stage at the far end that they use for a wide range of live entertainment - Mexican Karaoke the night we were there. Sounds horrible, I know, but it actually wasn't bad at all. The most important thing here is the food (duh!). It's a seafood focused menu... Mariscos if you will. While the seafood/shellfish choices are confined to those things I suspect they can reliably get via purveyors in Atlanta, what they feature is impeccably fresh and well prepared. Start with a Mexican version of a Shrimp Cocktail... or, Cocktel. A combination of seafood (shrimp, octopus, clams, crab, etc.) mixed with fresh avocado, celery and other ingredients. Think a mix between gazpacho, Bloody Mary and fresh, clean seafood flavors. Yeah, a bit hard to imagine, but trust me. It's good. Rul good. A large is way more than enough to split between 2-4 people depending on if it's an entree or component of a multi-item feast. But try it. It's good. Molchajeteada is declared as the house specialty, but you've got to dig into the multi page menu to find it. A molchajete is a stone mortar and pestle historically used in Mexico to make salsas, grind spices, etc. In this dish, they head the molchajete up to a nuclear hot temperature. Unlike the gringo Mexican places above, in this case hot is important. They stuff it with some beef, nopales, marinated chicken, avocado, hang some well seasoned and perfectly cooked 16/20 count shrimp, grilled onions and all slathered with a bubbling sauce that carmelizes on the molchajete. This is a ton of food - best shared with another and is a bit messy... but all fresh, freshly cooked and terrifically presented. Now, a few words of advice. This isn't one of those gringo Mexican places that we all have been to on Friday night. Las Islitas caters to the Latino community primarily and as such their staff is often a bit more limited in their English. So bring your google translate, or do a little homework in advance and you'll have a great time. The menu is in Spanish with English translations. The staff was efficient and extremely friendly and while not at the price point of the Friday night places, for the quality and fresh preparation, a fair price. Looking for a more interesting Friday night Mexican food experience - try this. Order ceviche (was super fresh and really flavorful), get a margarita and try some well prepared food that will shake up your rice and beans routine. read more

I would understand if we were a big party(more than6) but it was just me and my boyfriend and automatically billed with the 18%gratuity. My comment is not the service or the food. Both are great. I am writing this because you need to watch your bills here. I am giving this three stars instead of one because this is the maybe 10th time I've come and the first Ive had reason to make a comment that's not excellent. But I am so angry. My complaint is the fine print noted in this photo. According to the staff who ran the card--this 18% service charge was implemented by management. Per him, the servers only get a small portion of this. yeah, right. Aside from the fact I was charged $14 for a watered down paloma simply because I wanted another house tequila that is different from the normal one ($6 extra and I didn't even get extra tequila!). Then the young man who was billing us got upset because we questioned the "service charge". The service was great. The food was great. But NOWHERE charges an 18% service charge ($52 for us) and expects another 18% (another $52 on top?) for tip. I don't know if it's just that server with our server, or the restaurant -- but that's no better than highway robbery. You need to stop and that was the last straw for me. Since covid, most places charge a tip automatically in the bill which is totally fine. This place is an absolute find! It is family owned the food is fantastic and the service could not be better we met numerous members of the family and could not have had better food! There is a live mariachi band some nights their menu is mostly seafood and fish and it is definitely one of the favorite restaurants we have tried in a long time. Food was ok. Our dish had imitation Krab meat. Atmosphere felt just like you were in Cancun. But the up selling is over the top and uncomfortable. I found this place on Grubhub. They are about the only place I've found that serves fish soup. Their soup and tacos that I ordered for delivery were delicious. I decided to take the hubby by to actually eat in and we are hooked. The red snapper with garlic was so delicious and cooked to perfection. The ceviche here is incredible and that is all I can comment on because it has been the only thing I have ordered aside from the shrimp empanadas, which had an unusual taste but were pretty good also. On the service, they panic when they see gringos or someone who they feel might not speak Spanish. A simple "puedo hablar" calms everything down usually. Terrible service from the moment we walked in. Waiter was annoyed from the minute we sat down. We ordered water, he didn't tell us they only do a bottle of water and charge for each one. As first timers, he didn't tell us what any of the three dips he brought to the table were, he left for over 20 minutes before taking our order, never came to check on us. My chicken was overcooked and tough. we finally had to get up and walk to the bar to get our check to leave. My companion and I returned to the restaurant last week on Thursday. We were starving and were ready to order 10 minuets after being seated. We made our selections and the waiter returned to our table and told us to order something else because our meals would take too long to prepare. We got there at 8:15pm and they weren't closing till 9pm. We were shocked but complied but should have took this as a sign to leave at that moment. As the waiter brought the chips, ceviche and salsa, we noticed there was an excessive number of gnats that hovered over the plates.The food wasn't fresh as the shrimp tasted as if it were breaking down (ammonia like/rancid) and the oysters were lackluster at best. At the end of the meal, they increased the cost of the food when it was time to pay the bill, showing us the fine print on the menu where prices were "subject to change". We will not be returning to a restaurant with chefs who portrayed poor customer service through their waiters and with managers who engaged in shady price gouging practices. They charged $4.50 EACH for a small mug of ordinary lemonade, which did not include refills. It is the only restaurant in the South which did not serve sweet tea. This is a seafood restaurant that specializes in ceviche and cocteles, so let's just get that out of the way. The ceviche is phenomenal. I got a medium order of the mixto with pulpo (octopus), which was incredibly tender, well marinated, and a huge serving. It is true, traditional, Mexican ceviche with all the fixings (so happy to live so close). The fish tacos were also quite good and even the chips and salsa were excellent (as were the beans). Marcos (the owner and operator) is unbelievably nice and went out of his way to make our dining experience a joy. He brought us extra salsas for the ceviche (delicious) and told us about his family and their restaurants in Mexico. The employees are incredible and anyone who has complained about service either didn't try to bridge the language gap or wasn't being courteous themselves. We walked in and had to stand there for like 30 seconds before one of the hostesses decided who should handle us. From the outside it looks like any traditional hole in the wall Mexican taco place. Me and my girl stumbled across this place on yelp and almost didn't even get out when we drove by.
