I just don't get what the hype is about. We stopped here before going to the beach. Got two hot Lobster Rolls and an order of Lobster Mac and cheese. The Lobster rolls were just OK. If anything, was disappointed and the bottom of the buns were soggy before even putting on some melted butter. The Lobster mac and cheese was just awful. I would not call that mac and cheese. While I did not order anything from the fresh fish side, it did look very fresh and nice and clean. I don't get some of these negative reviews. We tried the oysters, mussels and lobster rolls. Delish!!! The oysters are plump and juicy. The mussels are steamed to perfection and the saltiness and butter just elevates it. And the rolls were filling enough to be perfection. The service...it's a fish market. They are busy and that's a testament to how fresh the food is. So if anyone is complaining about that, talk less please!!! And the ambiance is literally the sunset view. Unfortunately this beloved Chilmark institution hasn't survived the onslaught of tourists. You've never seen seasonal staff so confused and slow moving. On a given day, there will be one or two "real" employees who know what they're doing and the rest clueless students who have no hope of keeping up with the rush--especially not the cashiers and the kids struggling to make lobster rolls. 10/10 my favorite place we visited in Martha's Vineyard. While I know that people will be like "a fish market?" YES. Absolutely YES. We dragged my in-laws across the island to visit Aquinnah Cliffs and shortly after, we realized that we were hungry. We had a friend tell us to ensure that we stopped over at Larsen's afterward. We drove toward Chillmark, which was not far from Aquinnah Cliffs and was greeted with the cutest little coastal area. There was minimal parking and even someone directing traffic, as apparently it's not so much of a hidden secret. My father in law and husband took a seat outside on the crab traps awaiting for us to come out with the food. My mother-in-law and I embarked on the mission of the line inside. The place was packed! The line was moving relatively quickly for as many people that were in there. We walked into a cute coastal ambiance with Cape Code decorations and fridges on the right side of the line for those that wanted to take things home. We decided to order hot and cold lobster rolls, oysters, and clam chowder - the New Englanders dream. When I tell you I dream about this place and the food, I'm not kidding. This place was so hyped up that we had to try it. Well, we now wish we went to Menemsha's instead. We got the lobster roll which was just blah. It was also tiny. It didnt really have any flavor. We also ordered the Chowder which was watery and had a ton of potatoes and not that many clams. The lobster Bisque was good even though it didnt really have that much Lobster in it. It was a very good buttery, soup with a hint of Lobster flavor and crumbles of Lobster meat. The sitting area overlooks the Harbor and that was beautiful. The fish in the inside case looked fresh. In most or all of their crab products they use a mixture of crab and imitation crab. Not a fan of imitation crab and seems unfitting to use such an ingredient in a dock area- especially without clarifying this is used . Their raw oysters and clams are what you come here for. The clam chowder was wonderful. The scenery is nice. Seems like a good market for locals for fresh seafood but for prepared is more mixed. The stuffed items use a lot of the stuffing and more is not always better. Ordering raw items is separate from other items. So make sure you do 2 pickups if doing so. There are no drink offerings here besides water but maybe they don't want to compete with the gas station next door that does offer a variety. If I was here again. I would totally try Menemsha Fish Market next door. They may not offer as much or have as big a name as Larsen's but I might enjoy my experience more. read more

This place is super popular and seems to be the place to go in Menemsha. I like the stuffed scallop the best with huge chunks of scallop. Then the stuffed qualog or clam..which had bits of clam inside. Then the lobster Mac and cheese which I prob have better in the Bay Area and lately the lobster bisque which was more like a butter soup base and some pieces of lobster. Although the food prob wasn't my most favorite, I appreciated the small town vibe the hard workers and supporting the local markets. Tons of people were having the steamed whole lobster..so maybe I would try that next time or the raw oysters. read more

All fresh seafood is at Market price or they have special for oysters, usually dozen for $30. We had half dozen of Katana Bays and Menemsha Spearpoint oysters, both were great but I did prefer Spearpoint. They were so good we decided to order another dozen, this time just Spearpoint. AMAZING raw bar. Got a dozen raw cherrystone clams for $21 and they were amazing - some of the best I have ever had. The steamed lobster was fresh and high quality lobster but over cooked. The lobster roll was a pathetic soggy piece of bread, but the lobster meat was good. No tables but there are a few wood blocks to sit on that you can use as tables. Was literally on my way into Menemsha's Fish Market when I passed by Larsen's. My first impression was that I liked that the inside looked finished and clean, and because I paused at the front door and looked to one of the people in my party and said what do you think should we try this place and a woman coming out said oh yeah this one's the best. We tried it. But I'll also add that. The only reason I was willing to try it was because I know that I'm coming back tomorrow to have Menemsha's. I don't care how nice the place is, the staff were not welcoming at all. I don't know what judgment they were passing nor do I care, all I know is that I didn't appreciate it. -Clam chowder is runny and full of potatoes. -Crab Cake is mostly breading. -Lobster Bisque was great. The best fish market in Menemsha, and probably on Martha's Vineyard. Betsy and most of her employees are friendly and knowledgeable. The fish and shellfish are so fresh, and the takeaway food & raw bar are spectacular. Now that they have remodeled it is much easier to navigate, and the location can't be beat. There is nothing like eating fresh clams on the half shell, while watching fishermen unload their catches of the day. I took a bite of the lobster roll before I remembered to take a photo!! Definitely one of the freshest lobster rolls on the island. They're also the cheapest I've seen ($27-29) but also one of the smallest rolls I've seen, HOWEVER, the amount of lobster they give makes up for it. The sandwich is full of huge chunks of lobster. They also came with a bag of chips on the side. I will say if you get the cold lobster, it's in the fridge. If you get the hot lobster, you get that freshly given to you. Just an fyi to keep in mind. The clam chowder was good but was not anything special. The Lobster Mac and Cheese was good but kinda looked and had the mouthfeel of microwaved Mac and Cheese. There was not a lot of outdoor seating so if it's crowded you would have to walk away from the store to find a bench. If you were planning on taking public transportation from the other side of the island (Oak Bluffs/Edgartown) just to try this, save yourself the trip and get something closer. It was not worth the 2 hour trek from Oak Bluffs to visit this location. The location is amazing, right on the dock, but the lobsters rolls are not very good, and for the price, you would expect better. Cold lobster rolls: these are squished up and straight from the fridge. They won't make you a fresh one, and the whole mix is completely under seasoned. The bread is squished. The hot lobster roll with butter was better, but we didn't love their choice of bread and for $30: get some better bread. The dozen oysters were lovely, but they don't make the takeout situation easy. We also got some crudite and a tuna dip from the fridge that we liked. Service was curt and unwelcoming, so pretty much the only joy about this experience was being able to eat the oysters by the water with the snacky stuff. Very cool fish market located at the far end of Menemsha, right by the pier. You know that fishermen are dropping off their daily catches the morning of, and the display case is very impressive. Even have a small menu for fresh food, but the real appeal here is the take and go daily selection. You can order ahead of time via phone and they will give you a pick up time. I suggest you do that. We shared a lobster roll, steamers and clam chowder. It was my first lobster roll on this vacation and I was a little disappointed. It was kind of small. Don't get me wrong, it was warm, buttery and flavorful, but I expected something bigger. The clam chowder was creamy and warm. It went well with the oyster crackers. The steamers were new to us and we didn't know how to eat them. We didn't realized we had to dip them in the broth. Please be advised when jumping out and ordering the $30 lobster roll, you're getting a very fresh tasting lobster BUT it's a microscopic roll! I asked them to split the roll in half so my wife and I could share. When we got the roll it was on a small size plate covered in foil. I said this is the wrong order, we ordered the lobster roll, they said, yes! That's the roll cut in half. We peeled back the foil to find this microscopic roll cut in two. My half was maybe a two biter and it was gone! Again, very fresh tasting, but this should be called a lobster "tootsie" roll. I promise you, if Larsen's would display the roll out in front and people would be able to see what the roll looked like for $30 before they ordered, many would walk away including myself. read more

We tried the crab cakes, stuffed clams, stuffed scallops, clam chowder, and warm lobster rolls (warm ones are made to order, and cold ones are available for grab-and-go from the refrigerator in the waiting area), and all the food was delicious and reasonably priced for the area. The stuffed scallops and stuffed clams were very large (they use large shells to stuff) and tasty, but you don't need to get both if you're torn about which one to go for because they taste very similar. The clam chowder was very light yet flavorful. The lobster rolls were very simple but had all the elements for a delicious lobster roll. Overall, the food made for a delicious last meal on the island. There's an outdoor area with picnic tables for people to enjoy their food. Tips: Call ahead to order. My order took about 40 minutes Areas for improvement: - I realllyyyy wish the waiting area was larger because standing space is limited and hard to tell - upon entry - whether someone is waiting in line to order or whether they're just waiting for their name to be called to pick up their food. I know the place just underwent a renovation and that this suggestion is not feasible - At one point, I was next in line but the 5 or so people packing up orders took forever to notice me. It seemed a little disorganized because nobody had any specific task (labeling, calling out names, packing orders, etc.); instead, the employees seemed to be doing a little bit of everything all at once.
