Have had two PT sessions here and have two more scheduled for next week. I don't have a lot of experience with PT (I saw one a couple decades ago for some hockey injuries) so I don't have a lot to compare with. I was kinda surprised how many people are involved with a treatment - I had one person take me to the room, another person who came to get details about symptoms I was having, one person who applied heat pack/and electrodes for the electrotherapy, and finally another who gave massage therapy and showed me stretches and exercises to do at home. With all the people involved I feel like maybe some details get lost or confused - both visits I had I kinda felt like they wen't 100% sure about what my problems were. The condition of the interior definitely needs some love (water stains on the ceiling, a little cluttered with equipment here and there) but I don't think anything is actually dirty - the rooms seemed clean to me! My first appointment there were a lot of people in the waiting room, and I waited about 30 mins after my appointment time, and so missed a work meeting which was frustrating, but the next appointment only one other person in the waiting room everything was on time. Everyone from reception to the therapists were all friendly and nice to talk to. Today I had to reschedule one of my appointments for next week and was quick and efficient to find a new day that worked for me. I actually think that after just two sessions and with the at-home stretches that they gave me I've already felt an improvement with my leg pain, and at the end of the day that's what is most important :) read more

The fact is that one never wants or even expects to have an injury especially at a young age. However, Larry Shapiro and his team of expert PTs did a great job and within a few session my leg injury felt better. PT is not a miracle - you actually need to do your own stretching too at home or alter your movements until you're fully healed. PROS: Larry and his team are nice, caring, and competent people. They will make you feel right at home. They are genuine and really care about the healing process. I've had to reschedule or cancel many times - I never got a complaint or a slap on the wrist. They are flexible for all people and lifestyles. CONS: The space may be smaller than bigger practices you might have been to in the outer boroughs. Face it this is Manhattan! I feel that the space is cozy and accommodating. BOTTOM LINE: Make that call to Larry Shapiro's office and have some peace of mind that you will be in good hands. I've been to many PT offices and Larry Shapiro is by far the best. His leadership is evident in all aspects of the business. His staff is professional, warm and friendly and made going back each time well worth it. Larry was always happy to discuss my treatment plan and was sensitive to my doctors wishes and made sure I got the care I needed. If Judge Judy were a male physical therapist, she would look like Larry Shapiro holding an ice pack instead of a gavel. I've been to many physical therapists, but Larry and his crew offer no-nonsense care and easy-to-understand instructions. If you're down about an injury, expect to laugh, especially on the days that Larry wears tie dyed scrubs, compliments of his school-aged daughter. When he's not asking you to stretch more and do your exercises, he puts you through your paces and provides free legal, dating, and career advice, whether you want it or not. I especially want to thank him and his team for helping me finish my first marathon. I wanted to kill him when he told me to stop running for two weeks in the beginning of my training, but he was right. My runner's knee needed to heal. And it did, thanks to him and the staff. He's worked with enough athletes to know we're a stubborn breed with a high tolerance for pain. But what athlete wants to go against Judge Judy/Larry Shapiro? Don't let the modest look of the waiting area distract you. Larry Shapiro is a very tuned in, energetic and professionally engaged physical therapist. He stays apprised of all your issues and touches base with you throughout your care when he is not the therapist working with you. He shared a helpful referral to a doctor that would be a good match to my husband's needs and reminded me often to see my general practitioner about facial numbness that I had mentioned to him. There definitely is a personal touch to the professionalism here that is above and beyond the typical PT. I was especially impressed that each of the therapists knew how to treat for the type of hip replacement that I had. The surgery is an innovative and new one. The Staff was GREAT, hence the two stars. My therapist was wonderful, delightful and knew his information. The place on the other hand was dirty, stale, desperately needs a good cleaning and some new equipment. Again, my therapist was amazing and I wish I could see him at another facility. When I was leaving there was a woman on a PT bike in the middle of the room that I had to walk through to get out to the reception area. It is a small space, but I felt in these Covid times, they did not take that into consideration and have her do her PT somewhere else in the facility. I went in for a foot problem. They sat me in a chair, put a gown over the chair, which I appreciated. (I did not ask for the gown to be put there but was happy they did.) The piece that was brought into my bay/room they rested my leg on was a plastic (dirty) milk crate with a pillow on top of it. I wonder when the last time the milk crate was washed. I know the other reviews are glowing, but I really cannot recommend this place. read more

I was so excited to start PT at Larry Shapiro Physical Therapy, a local business, but was shocked at the poor healing treatment I received there. First of all, the facility is overstuffed with too many examination rooms, all separated by shower curtain-like dividers. Each tiny, dirty room has an examination bed -- which is also the only place to do exercises -- and a chair for you and a stool for your therapist. The therapy consisted of ice packs, heat and TENS/EMS, all of which I already did at home, and a brief massage. Exercises? Only two were demonstrated. The first was done by a "nurse" who taught me incorrectly, and the therapist had to correct her and show me the right way the following week -- and after I had exacerbated my injury. The other, he demoed in 30 seconds. I repeatedly asked for help with exercises, but it did not happen. That's it, other than handing me a print out of exercises to do on my own. Now those print outs were great, but self-injury is possible if you aren't carefully shown how to do them the first time. I went to PT to get to work so that I could heal from an injury and then strengthen myself. This did not happen in 3 sessions, so I walked. I've had therapy for various injuries through the years, folks, and this is not how it is done. AVOID! read more

I have consistently had a great experience with Larry. Him and his team are thorough, friendly, and warm. Most importantly, they care about making you better and healing and will go the extra mile to make it happen. Lost one star because the facilities are small and cramped (welcome to New York). But in a way that's also what makes this place rock: No pretense, no BS, just focused, experienced therapy. These guys work hard with their patients and with the doctors and insurance companies like no PT provider I've seen (and I've worked with many). If you're all about stats and charts and progress measurements and all the other stuff that ISN'T moving muscles, these guys aren't for you. If you want a team of patient-focused coaches who focus on service, patient mobility and pain relief over paperwork, these guys are for you. Can not give enough compliments to Larry Shapiro and his compassionate staff. They are busy but somehow you always get what you need. Larry helps you with everything. I have never had a insurance hassle because his competent office staff make sure you don't. In addition, this practice is not just about the use of equipment like electrical stimulation or electric acupuncture or ultrasound, it's about hands-on healing through massage. Larry is always available to answer your questions and is always positive about your progress which really keeps me going. I recently in the middle of regular PT for aging muscles and joints, fell and really hurt my knee, neck and back. Larry called me at home several times to see how I was feeling. He even offered to pick up an electric heater for me because there was no heat in my apartment! Larry guided me through home care and told me to come back when I felt ready. How many people in medicine do that? None. He is gentle and sensitive to his patients' emotional needs, (even the weather) and how it could be affecting your progress. When I was at the Allen Pavillion, it was like being in Army, 10 minutes late, your appointment was cancelled but not the reverse if your PT was absent and they forgot to call you. Appointments strictly scheduled to end in 40 minutes or so, at Larry Shapiro's place you are there until they are satisfied that you are feeling better. It's not a fancy office and I like that because it means the money earned there isn't going towards expensive art - it's going to the practice. His hot and cold packs are amazing and the other technicians know just how to place them and will help you until it's right. I am amazed I have fallen into such a loving practice and I look forward to a full recovery. read more
