We had a great experience here, surprised at some past reviews, although it seems like ownership/management has shuffled a bit. Heard it's going to again transform into more of a "Irish pub" style in the future. Glad to see this historic space being rethought because it's an amazing place. We didn't get anything fancy, but really enjoyed our smash burgers, appetizer and dessert. Drinks were great too. Our server was super prompt and professional. Folks were kind, and we chatted with some of the staff and locals. We also walked around the first floor of the Inn, which was amazing, especially decorated for the holidays. Glorious place to visit and wander about. The tavern rooms are decorated according to period and theme, there are several niches where artifacts, collectibles and other memorabilia bring those historic eras to life. The bathrooms were pristine. Their gazpacho soup was delicious, but we had some unfortunate customer service issues. Besides no forewarning they would serve from a limited menu that night, there were a couple other issues that were probably because the staff were new hires or something. It's still a wonderful place. Just smile and talk about your concerns, if any. They did actually listen. read more

Mother's Day brunch was a disaster at Larrick's tavern. It was a pre-fixe menu only (even though the website stated that a la carte would be available. I over heard a few people very annoyed by this because they had children. We arrived at 11:30 and didn't leave until 1:30! One woman left her family bc she couldn't wait any longer to eat and wasn't feeling well. How can it take so long to serve 4 tables on a prefixe? The waitress even said things were made in advance and no substitutions. Our waitress was very nice I must say- but the food... the food was terrible. Hard boiled egg Benedict, broken hollandaise, salty potatoes and a tough lemon curd cake. Took forever to get service. Appetizer, a Brie pastry Came cold If there was ANY brie in or on it, it had to be applied with a small pointed brush. Main course also cold. Brussels sprouts seemed boiled to mush. Don't even know what to call other side. Dessert, bread pudding, cold and hard as a stone. In addition, if there is a "special event," be careful. What an interesting place! We stayed in one of the rooms and ate at Larrick's for Sunday brunch. This review will cover only the restaurant. The Tavern was quite empty today, perhaps 6-8 parties spread out in various rooms. We ate in the oldest room, a small rustic dining room with great exposed beams and decorations. We got very attentive service from Brittany, and I must say that the food was fantastic. I had the Breakfast Burger, which a generous ground beef patty topped with egg, cheese, and caramelized onions served over baby potatoes. Super good. My wife enjoyed her shrimp and grits as well. I would absolutely come back again and try lunch or dinner if we had time. read more

This was a great place. They had live music with an acoustic guitarist which was nice, the food was excellent. I had the fillet which was incredibly tender and had a great flavor. The staff was super friendly and everyone was welcoming. This place has a ton of history and the owner was happy to show us around and tell us all the fascinating stories. We absolutely loved it and highly recommend stopping here. You can even stay the night in one of the 22 hotel rooms on site. It's beautiful. read more

Went for Mother's Day and was very disappointed. Was not busy when we arrived maybe 2 tables, waited wayyy to long to get our drinks and order taken. Waitress didn't write anything down which led to my parents not receiving what they ordered. The chef came out to greet us which is funny because I got to meet the guy that cooked me a bad meal. Lobster was the special and you didn't serve it with dipping butter....... That's such a standard thing with lobster. It was dry and tough without the dipping butter so probably wouldn't have helped. I ordered the steak with garlic Parmesan butter topping. Granted it's a New York strip but WOW was there a lot of fat and tough grizzle. Steak was not flavored at all very bland. I like my steak rare, shouldn't be hard to do, but the chef must have thrown it on the grill real hot and allowed it to flame because it was completely covered in crunchy black char. We had the opportunity to visit the Wayside Inn for Dinner this weekend for our Anniversary. It was an outstanding experience all the way around. Michael, the proprietor was the Consummate host. Mike was an excellent server and everything was delicious! This is an absolute gem for any historians in the VA area. Three of us went to dinner. The menu was not the same as posted on the website, so we were disappointed in the choices. Prices were very high. Portions were not generous, steak was gristly, "Bowl" of soup was small and did not come with any bread or crackers. Hamburger bun was a plain packaged grocery-store brand. We were expecting a much higher quality for the prices asked. Waitress was great, but too busy and having issues in the kitchen, lots of apologies. Enjoyed a great brunch here last Sunday. Our friends had made a reservation and they had a nice table waiting for us. There was a lot to choose from on the a la carte brunch menu. I think the sampler is probably the way to go if you are unsure. I had the omelet and it was prepared perfectly. (I don't like them when they are over cooked) I wish it was a little closer so we could come here more often. We love Chef Travis style of cooking. His Italian background comes through many of his dishes, I've sampled almost every dish and have not been disappointed. Had a party of 12 for St. Patrick's day celebration. The reservations were made a month in advance and I had a confirmation of the reservations but the restaurant bungled that! We should have left then! This place was Ill prepared to serve people. The food was horrible, The presentation was horrible! The waiter was trying his best but was overwhelmed and no one would help him. We did not get what we ordered in a timely manner. We were there 3.5 hours! I will not go back to this place! We stopped here last year and had a heck of a time getting served. There was no one else eating there at the time, which in hindsight we should have taken as a clue to back away and go elsewhere . When we finally did get a waiter, they were rude and unpleasant and abrupt. When the food finally arrived ages later, it was cold and unpalatable. The place might be historic, but the service and food is so bad. In future, given a choice I would go to McDonald's instead of wayside. ....And I utterly loathe fast food. Very disappointed in the Thanksgiving meal today. The food was ok, green beans were cold, gravy was cold and the sweet potatoes were out of a can. For $49 a person you would expect a much better quality and taste. Ran out of white meat, only dark meat left. For the cost of this meal it should have been so much better. Had Easter meal few years ago here which was phenomenal and cost less... Our waitress was great though. New owners need to work on serving a much better meal especially for the price! Also for $49 you would expect real mashed potatoes not from a box! Food was more cafeteria style then restaurant quality. Almost $300 for such lousy taste! read more

What a lovely surprise! We were googling for a nearby place for a getaway and found this lovely historical inn... They had just reopened after Covid shutdowns so we decided to eat in. You would not believe the colonial dining room - shock full of history and we nearly had the whole room to ourselves! The inn has actually multiple rooms and even private dining rooms. We had the special Prime Rib which was delightfully fragrant with thyme and generous portion. I went with Pot Pie which was good to. The next morning we had the breakfast that comes with the room and it was awesome...good job to everyone here...will be driving out one of these days just for brekkie!!! read more

Our experience was Waitstaff = 5 stars, Food = 5 Stars. The management (Angie) is why they are receiving a 1 Star rating! * At the time when everything described below happened we didn't know Angie and Rich were the owners/managers. We found this out after when we found a news article about them leasing the facility. So earlier in the week I made reservation for our group of 6 for dinner and to enjoy some live music they were having last evening. This was everyone in our group first visit to this establishment. We were greeted by staff and they were VERY friendly but didn't seem to know much about what was going on this evening. Multiple of the staff even said they had NO idea that this event was happening until they arrived at work and apologized. That's ALL on management for a lack of managing! When we got to our table there were two reserved seating cards. One for our group of 6 and another for a group of 2 people we didn't know. I let the staff know we weren't comfortable sitting with people we don't know due to COVID. They said they understood and I moved our group to a different table and the three groups of 2 from that table to our original table with the other party of two they already had assigned to that table. We also did this because the party of 2 assigned to our original table had a note on the reservation card that they wanted to be next to the table behind us. The staff said it was ok. A few minutes later a lady (Angie) came out and had a FIT!!! When she saw we were sitting at the table we moved to she raised her voice and starting yelling at us and her staff in front of other guest. I was going to explain what happened but she stormed off and start raising her voice at the staff again. She then came back and said "You all can't sit hear and have to move!" I asked her multiple times if it really made a difference and she didn't answer at first but then said these people are friends of the band and want to be close. I said the table they are assigned to now is closer than this one. She gave no response, picked up are reservation card and walked it back over to our original table and the left. So we again told the waitstaff that we weren't comfortable sitting with people we didn't know due to COVID. They again said they understood and brought out a table for two and sat it next to the table behind us as there reservation card requested to be near the group at that table behind us. Once again that's why we moved and didn't move them. Staff was VERY apologetic to all us for Angie's actions and even said how rude she acted! Staff came and asked for our drink order. One of the people in are group asked what type of wine they had? Staff said red and white. We then asked what type of red and white and they apologized and said they didn't know. But they went and asked and told us. Then we asked how much a glass was vs. a bottle? They again said we have no idea but would find out. This ALL again goes back to a lack of managing your staff and not giving them the info they need to be successful and for the establishment to be successful. Then Angie came back to our table and said VERY rudely "I found out you all moved your table and not my staff" and then again, just walked away. What was the point of that if she wasn't going to ask us why or allow us to explain!? About 30 minutes later as more people arrived we saw someone ask Angie about the smaller table and Angie pointed at are table and started complaining to them about us! We could see her and hear her. VERY unprofessional!!! We placed are dinner order and again the food was 5 stars and the waitstaff worked there butts off! Also, the music was great! At one point we saw Rich going around to select tables and talking with people. Obviously he knew the people but never made it around to talk with everyone. One would think if Angie and Rich are trying to take this establishment "back to what it once was" they would be welcoming to everyone not just people they know. A business can only grow and be successful if you expand your clientele! Our group is always looking for new, local Mom and Pop locations to support. We may come back again in the future but only because the staff worked so hard and the food was so good! Management needs to do a WAY better job of managing, training the staff and treating the staff with respect. They also need to treat patrons much better or they will NEVER succeed!!! read more

Had New Years Eve dinner here since the 'Boogie Man ' did not feel like taking a chance on a strange band, venue and distance. Here we had a local folk group and a local Elvis impersonation. These really exceeded expectations! Grandma loved the Elvis Act and the dude was really sharp, soft spoken and kind even though he got it that for me, you can keep him. Ordered the surf and turf N.Y.E. specials; shrimp for me and crab cake for grandma. The prime rib was perfect, plenty of suet to take home for our woodpecker friends, cream type horseradish though. The crab was the real thing (! I've lived on The Shore for 15 years!) , the shrimp equally good, not too much Old Bay. (Told the owners so.) Lovely presentation, good beer on tap, free sip of champagne. VERY old buildings, don't forget to duck through the remodeled beams, great vibes, antiques everywhere. Quiet, classy, charming; nice people, a Rockefeller reservation telegram on the wall etc. A good elementary school field trip spot. Out of my working-class comfort zone, but not too dear for real class! Don't recall the names of our desserts but grandma's cream pie sort of thing was unusual and very good; my death by chocolate sort of thing equally so. One caveat, this Valentines Day I saw a banner here for the brunch, later, after being released from babysitting, grandma and I headed out. I called ahead to see what was up, (not easy in these hills) when I got through no sooner did the word brunch pass my lips than I got back "only till three, sorry." I stopped for lunch and had the fish & chips. Having lived for some time in Wisconsin where the Friday fish fry is a tradition, I was surprised by the meal. The fillet was 10+" long and very tasty. The waitresses were extremely friendly and fun and made the meal that much more enjoyable. The restaurant (& hotel) is a restored late 1700's Inn. The hostess (& I am guessing, the owner) gave me a quick tour before seating me. The ambience is great. A must see for anyone traveling in the area. read more

The Winchester City Council of Beta Sigma Phi had the pleasure to hold its yearly Spring Ritual at the Wayside Inn today. It was wonderful. We had a group of 33 ladies in attendance and all I heard from them were positive comments. They went out of their way to do a little research and create a welcome sign using our Greek letters and colors. They even used our colors in their tablecloth choices. Not much to say- bad food and slow service. I ordered the blackened steak bites, medium, they came out well done, and not blackened. Salad was a few minutes away from being totally wilted. Ranch dressing was awesome and the fries were good...so I paid $27 for good fries and dressing. read more

Third visit over past decade, third set of owners. Arrived at 5PM Saturday night. Great atmosphere, friendly waitress saddled with a very sadly mismanaged inn. Limited menu got even more limited when after ordering, 10 minutes later, we were informed they had "run out of hamburgers" (a featured item on the menu!!). Little hint, it's a Saturday night, check your inventory. Our order arrived 50 minutes after ordering. Yet the table next to ours got their order in 10 minutes. Ended up with a grill cheese and fries which were both mediocre (not much cheese and lukewarm fries). Spouse just got risotto (she ended up passing on the four entries remaining). It was dried on top from sitting under the warming light. Wine pour was skimpy and beer selection was limited also. Never again. PS, two entrances to the parking lot, one is in scandalous condition and could easily damage the front end of cars with limited ground clearance--saw it just in time thankfully. read more

We were passing through town after a visit to Belle Grove Plantation and were attracted by the Wayside Inn. It was 1:15pm on a Friday and we decided to stop for lunch. We received a warm welcome, were invited to take a seat and "our waitress will be with you". We loved the ambiance. However, after waiting 15 minutes and never seeing an employee we left. The service was horrible we were the only ones here on a Sunday she took your order and repeated back to us and then we waited forever for our food finally we got our food my mom got her food my cousins wife got her food I got my food and my cousin got his fish and corn pudding but didn't get his second side and neither did my dad all my dad got was his salad and one of his sides he didn't get his fish and his second side sad thing is they should have given us the two meals for free WE WERE THE ONLY ONES IN THERE TO the bathrooms were not up to code either it was like they just jammed a bathroom in a small hole the restroom doors barley opened and when it did open you had to shuffle to the side so that the door could close and then when you went into the stall the door it was like the toilet jammed in and there was no space between you and the stall door also they had two sinks and you couldn't get to the second sink because there was a shelf right in front of the sink read more

I went here about two years ago for lunch and it's a neat place to visit since it's been around since 1797. We ate at the bar and had their famous peanut soup and some liquor drinks which was a good combination. It's also a great place to refuel yourself after some antique shopping in Middletown. If you are looking to splurge on a romantic dinner, they have an extensive menu in the antique dining rooms. read more

My wife and I visited this restaurant for the first time this afternoon. Our waitress was efficient and friendly. The food (sandwiches) was tasty and came fairly quickly. The only negative comment goes to the onion rings that tasted of fish rather than onions. Definitely will return to this restaurant again. read more

Their Facebook page and website both advertised a Mothers Day "real country breakfast" for $15/person. According to the menu on their website the real country breakfast should have included "two eggs any style", french toast, pancakes, ham, bacon or sausage, etc. It was advertised for Sunday, May 10th from 9am-11am. I called and made reservations for 10am and specifically asked if reservations were needed for the Mother's Day breakfast and was told "yes". We arrived this morning and were told to just sit anywhere. Most Mothers Day brunches/breakfasts were completely sold out/booked in Winchester an surrounding areas. The fact that this place was practically deserted should have been red flag #1. We sat there for quite a while with no service. Finally my husband asked one of the servers how the Mothers Day brunch worked (because we never got any menus and noticed a few people going up to a buffet on the other side of the restaurant). The waitress looked completely confused and said she would go ask. She came back and said the buffet was "it" and that the Mothers Day dinner started at noon. What??? I spoke up and said the website advertised a Mothers Day breakfast and that's what I requested when I made the reservations for 10am. If there was no actual Mothers Day breakfast specially planned, they should have let me know that when I called! I obviously wasn't expecting my family to eat dinner at 10am.... The waitress apologized profusely and tried her best to take care of us, but ultimately the breakfast buffet was very disappointing. The eggs were scrambled, overcooked and turning green from sitting in the chafing dish too long (that's definitely not the 2 eggs "any style" as advertised on the website). The pancakes and french toast were soggy (also from sitting too long). We were never offered any coffee, we had to finally ask for it when we couldn't find any coffee at the buffet ourselves. We got cups delivered to the table, but nobody ever came around refilling the coffee cups. We were offered free desserts due to the "confusion" about what the Mothers Day breakfast really was - but even that wasn't very satisfying. Bottom line, for $15/person we expected something much different and left feeling very disappointed. This was not the Mothers Day breakfast we were hoping for. read more
