I recently had A-Top come out to repoint the outside chimney which absolutely needed it. The mortar i between the bricks was eroding. In an attempt to resolve a water leak…read morein my basement, Saint Nick's sealed one of my two chimney flues using two bricks and sealant. One flue went to my stove in my front room, the other to my furnace. Neither it appears, was a solid choice. I've never had anyone else work on my chimney. While the intent was to stop water entry, sealing a flue is a safety concern that I had to have addressed after a second professional inspection identified the issue. Blocking a ventilation source with masonry and sealant is not a standard solution for a drainage problem and created a hazard I was not expecting. I am sharing this so other homeowners know to verify that any repairs to their chimney or flues maintain proper safety and ventilation. I would recommend getting a second opinion on any structural "fixes" involving your flues to ensure the home remains safe.
