It's been a while since we've eaten at La Paz. The menu has been updated but my favorites were still available. Had a Texas Margarita and it was amazing. Still made from scratch. The fish taco platter was fresh and delicious. Our server, Jimmie was great, super friendly, attentive. So refreshing these days. One thing I always pay attention to when I eat out is the cleanliness of the dining area. I will not revisit an establishment if the dining area is filthy (Sumo - yuck!) La Paz has a clean dining room and I even saw a person wiping down window sills, chair backs and seats. I love this place! read more

Although their tacos are a little higher than some other restaurants' tacos on Taco Tuesdays (used to pat3ing $2 but theirs are $4), their $4 tacos are filling and seasoned exceptionally well. My favorite is Chicken Arranchera (there are steak, and pork options as well). Along with your selected meat it comes with bacon, onions, mild chiles and melted jack cheese folded into soft flour tortillas. The taco is so filling that it feels like you have eaten 2 tacos. We used the La Paz catering for our daughter's wedding reception. 300 guests. The LaPaz team worked with us to get the just the right amount without overselling. Very little waste and leftovers. They provide EVERYTHING!! We saved so much money and time not having to rent or buy serving utensils, chafing dishes, etc. It made our event so much less stressful. Went for an early dinner for a second shot at the Tex-Mex. It wasn't very busy seeing as it was around 5:15 for dinner. It seemed like there was only one server for about 4 or so tables, she seemed flustered and not incredibly warm or friendly. You get free chips and salsa as per usual for mexican restaurants. The chips were salted nicely and salsa was decent, (on the chunky side with a little bit of a kick). I ordered the burrito asada with steak and my husband ordered the blue and black quesadilla. The food came out fairly quick. My meal was a large portion of black beans with Mexican rice and a large flour tortilla filled with small diced onions and peppers and steak (cooked well done) with cheddar cheese. It was pretty good, just not quite what I was expecting as far as the diced vegetables, (which didn't give the burrito much flavor) My husband said his quesadilla was good, just a little underwhelming for the $14.00 cost. Overall, not a great dining experience, just average. Food was decent, service was lack luster and price is on the higher side for the quality of food. read more

We arrived about 4:45 on a Friday and the place was almost empty. The hostess wanted to sit us at the bench seating against the wall but we asked for for a booth that was empty. The table needed whipping off but was otherwise clean. She told us the table was not available as it had not been cleaned. We asked if we could wait. She was obviously annoyed and said very dismissively "You can wait as long as it takes". (She had a towel and could have easily wiped it down). We waited and eventually got seated. While we were eating the place was filling up and almost all the customers were with kids and the place where she wanted to seat us was surrounded by couples with young children, just as we suspected it would. We love children but we wanted a quite afternoon with some privacy. We did get that but no thanks to the hostess. The food and service were great, as always. When it came time to leave we walked by the hostess and wanting to end the evening pleasantly we planned to thank the hostess and say good evening. She would not meet our eye and ignored us, acting still pissed off. Other than her attitude it was a pleasant meal. Employees like that don't reflect well on any business. read more

I have been a regular at la Paz for the past 16 years. And today a new waitress who I have never seen before. Comes in with attitude and this sense of arrogance about her that she shouldn't have. I did not catch her name but she was the short haired and on the plus sized. Today was my first time I had dissatisfaction with la paz. They did not let me get a kid menu item yet I have been getting it for 16 years. Plus I do not see a big deal sense I am the one paying for food. And even if I cannot order she does not need to be rude about the situation. Lastly she would not split our checks between our group. Which I felt bad for because I was on the expensive side with my child who also ordered a meal and we both got drinks and queso. So while we had a 30$ plus meal. Others at the table had 10 dollar meals. And we were all paying the same price. I just think la paz is heading down a wrong path with the new wait staff. read more

La Paz was very much on point. Based on some of the other reviews I wasn't expecting much but I was definitely proven wrong. We started with the Queso which was amazing, along with the chips. We also had the house margaritas which I thought were very fairly priced and very good. Finally, for our entree we had the fish tacos based on recommendations from others. They were out of this world. I'm actually craving some right now. I'm new to the area and haven't had a chance to try many other Mexican/Texmex places but this will definitely stay at the top of my list. Can't wait to go back to La Paz! read more

This was my second time at La Paz. It's a very authentic restaurant with great food and good service. The fajitas were delish! The meat was grilled perfectly alongside a spread of veggies - some of which I've never had in my fajitas before (like zucchini and squash). It's a shame I was travelling when I visited because there was so much food leftover and my hotel fridge wasn't big enough to store a to-go box in. =( read more

I will have to agree with the other on this one. The quality of the food here seems to be getting worse. La Paz used to be the place to go in Birmingham for good Mexican food, I feel like it's gotten significantly worse or our tastebuds have just gotten a lot better with restaurants like El Barrio etc setting the bar really high. I've gotten the Texas BBQ quesadilla and fish tacos in the past (a few years ago) and both have always been really good. I went back yesterday - the chips and salsa were great. I got the street tacos combo - the carne asada taco and chicken taco were great but the pork left something to be desired. It came out to be about $12 and all I could think was "I could have gotten 6 ridiculously tasty tacos for the price at the taco truck." read more

I've eaten at La Paz many times. Unfortunately it just keeps getting worse and worse. Last night the food was poorly prepared and too expensive for what you get. The margaritas were almost undrinkable. Service was slow and not friendly. The building is looking rundown and the bathrooms were gross. We won't be back. Went to sit at the bar and have dinner with my wife tonight. Bar manager was in a foul mood and was yelling and throwing things around. Service was very slow and our order was incorrect twice. Once the tab came we were billed for the entire meal despite the orders being incorrect multiple times. We didn't even receive and apology until we asked that one entree to be removed since we didn't eat it. The bar manager never apologized and had to speak to a front of house manager. I do not recommend this place. Worst experience I've had in years. Terrible service, mediocre food and "Texas" margaritas came premixed out of what looked like an oversized bleach bottle. read more

4 out of 5 because of price. High class for a Mexican place, but good overall and a must try. The cheese dip is the best around. The chunks of onions and peppers set it apart from regular white cheese dips that you find at most places. As far as the main courses, this place is like most Mexican restaurants. The same 7 or 8 ingredients are in everything, just rearranged and named something different- but good. I highly recommend the fried ice cream. I did a catering service with La Paz and must say the food was fantastic! When I went in to pick up the order at the bar the bartender was extremely rude and cut me off in the middle of my sentence. I have never eaten here before but was told how great the food was. First impressions count and I will use the one in Hoover not the Mt Brook location again. Worse than awful now! This used to be the best Mexican food around but after two bad trips -- NO MORE! Most restaurants shred their chicken for their chicken dishes -- they cube theirs into tasteless chunks of "mystery meat." The sauce tasted like dried up tomato paste with little flavor. The service was absolutely awful. We had to go back to the receptionist just to get soft drinks refilled. They brought the cheese dip long before they brought the chips and it had become cold. We had two of our small grandchildren and the restaurant provides ABSOLUTELY NOTHING for small children to do. Try keeping a 2 & 4 year old occupied for 45 minutes while you are waiting for food to come out. This last two times were undoubtedly one of the worst meals I've ever been served in any restaurant anywhere. Why did we go back? We hoped they were just having a bad night the first time. I went on a sunny afternoon with my husband and infant son and we sat outside. The staff we encountered were all super friendly. The hostess was young and smiley and adorable and our waiter was patient and efficient. I wish I knew his name so I could credit him here because the service and his attitude are worth mentioning. The hostess was great about us bringing our tiny baby in there, some restaurants aren't so warm and welcoming about it, and she immediately brought us a little stand for his car set carrier that he was sleeping in. We got a couple of beers and diet cokes and the drinks were never empty. I ordered the Santa Fe Enchilada with the fried egg on top and I thought it was so delicious. The food arrived quickly, our orders were exactly as we placed them and it was hot and fresh. I will be going back here. And I recommend the Santa Fe Enchilada with fried egg. The end! read more

Queso is delicious but our waitress is a bitch. Like an actual bitch. I told her that I received 2 sprites instead of a sprite and a water, and she proceeded to pour water into my sprite. When we asked for a drink menu, she was extremely hostile. She then spilled a Diet Coke on us and I'm pretty sure it was on purpose. What can I say if you want a good margarita this place has them. I enjoy going to La Paz and sitting in the bar. While the entire restaurant is constantly busy and that always amazes me. Hanging out in the bar area you get great service and a fun atmosphere. The quesadilla(green one) is very good. So is the guac and queso and corn dip. Very affordable food and super cheap kids menu. I've experienced cold, mushy food and stale chips around dinner. A year or so ago, I would be raving about La Paz and their fantastic fish tacos, but for some reason, the past few times I've been back, the quality of the entrees have been sub-par. Even after my friend had a plate where the chicken that was still raw on one end, I came back, because I thought the tacos were that good. The food here is fresh and the service is really good. We had chips and salsa and a bowl of queso within 2 minutes. Our server was very friendly but did not hover. She checked on us periodically and it was just right. Did I mention the food is fresh. I can taste the lime and the cilantro in my quesadilla. The lettuce is crisp, and the tomatoes are fresh. The tortilla chips are good and salty. And the salsa verde is really the best I've had anywhere. I give La Paz 5 stars. Oh, and my wife said the diet coke is mixed just right. She would know...
