I brought my 16 year old daughter and an old friend to Lau Sze Chaun a month ago. I dropped over $200, wanting to treat my party to a relaxing experience. We shared the Peking duck, the Singapore mei fun, the cold cucumber appetizer, and cocktails/mocktails. Pros: The presentation of the duck was beautiful. It came with various toppings and pancakes to wrap the duck in. Everything we ordered was good. My lychee martini was also very nice. Cons: Service was very slow and inattentive. (We are easy to please, all 3 of us having worked in the restaurant industry, and I still tipped well) The restaurant is very brightly lit - like a school cafeteria. Safety - this is where the evening fell apart.... While we were dining, we were seated close to the bar. A gentleman sat at the bar and ordered. Soon after, another man approached him and began to threaten him. He was using the N word repeatedly, cursing, and getting louder and more agitated as time went on. A couple of patrons at the bar tried to intervene, but as he continued to escalate, they returned to their seats. When the man threatened to shoot the other man, our group hastily left the restaurant. On our way out, I mentioned to the women at the hostess station that the situation by the bar was escalating , becoming dangerous, and that someone should contact the police. She said that the managers were monitoring and were aware. We will not be back. I am disappointed that this is how our evening abruptly ended, having to leave quickly and in fear for our safety. I know that the establishment cannot control a situation like this initiating, but to allow it to continue and continue and not do anything at all is unacceptable. I did call and leave a message for the manager the next day and also sent an email to the restaurant, but no one followed up with me. read more

Staying in Pinecrest area and we wanted to grab some dinner. Our friend suggested Lao Size Chaun. We let our friend order. We got a noodle dish, green beans soup dumplings and the 1/2 duck. Each of the dishes were great. The beans had a slight spicy kick. The noodles were excellent. The soup dumplings were tasty. The duck was pretty tasty too. Prices are a tad on the high side. Presentation and service were very good. The staff was helpful with the menu and kept our water glasses full. I attended a Yelp Elite event at Lao Sze Chuan a few months ago and finally returned for a full meal--and it did not disappoint! We celebrated my best friend's 30th with a group of 20 and rented out two private rooms. The experience was amazing from start to finish. Our server, Said, and his team were attentive, friendly, and made sure everything ran smoothly. The Lazy Susans on the tables made sharing super fun--we tried so many delicious dishes! Highlights included the Szechuan spicy wontons, soup dumplings (a crowd favorite), spicy cucumber salad, Mongolian beef, pork belly, shrimp fried rice, and General Tso's chicken. Ventured out to Lao Szechuan on a snowy afternoon and was met with such delicious food! I ordered the Dan Dan noodles that were delicious. The Szechuan peppercorns were very evident in this dish, and as much as I love the kick drinking water after is a weird feeling! My favorite was the 3-Cup chicken dish. Like wow was this probably my new favorite chicken dish! Sauce was light but the chicken was still nice and crunchy. The added basil made the dish fragrant, I was so good! Scheduled a dinner with my family to celebrate the new year. There were 8 of us. Grayson was our server and he did an amazing job. He was attentive and helpful. He explained the dishes and answered all our questions. We had a room with a large round table and lazy Susan that was very helpful for sharing. The cocktails ordered were the red dragon margarita, Tori old fashion, Lao Lychee, Pomegranate spritz, Plum Blossom, Sze Highball, and a pear martini. Everyone enjoyed their cocktails very much. The bartender made them look very fancy. For appetizers, we shared spring rolls, wontons with chili, Xiao long bao(soup dumplings), crabmeat and Fish belly soup, (shared), hot and sour soup, wonton soup. For dinner, we shared vegetable fried rice, Szechuan green beans, shredded duck lettuce wraps, sliced beef tenderloin in golden soup, sautéed chicken with garlic sauce, chefs special dry chicken, shishito pepper prime rib beef with peppercorns and a szechuan style peppercorn bass. (Note very large, full fish in skin). Collectively, everyone loved the meal and experience! The dry chili chicken was crispy and great heat! Some said the bass was the best, a few said the sliced beef tenderloin soup was the best. I mentioned to Fanny that I brought everyone after the great elite event on November 19. It was nice of them to have dim sum till 3:30, but these prices, sheesh. The food's good, but it's not something I'm willing pay that price for, I ordered half a duck, way too expensive, it was good, the waiter was great and so was the kitchen staff. After securing a reservation on OpenTable, I dined with a group of friends on a rainy Friday evening before going to see a movie at the Silverspot theater next door. The restaurant is bright and spacious with a section near the front with larger tables and booths for groups; this area can also be reserved for events, along with the more private rooms along the back of the restaurant. The main dining section in the middle takes up a majority of the space and has plenty of tables for smaller groups and pairs. They also have a small but full bar at the side of the main dining space. Overall, I liked the decor and aesthetic! We got a round of drinks, including the Whiskey Highball, Lychee martini, Golden Gate, and espresso martini. All the drinks were presented very well, but we did notice that the cocktails were very sweet - a bit too sweet for my liking. So I think next time, I'll go with a beer/wine/sake option. To eat, we ordered several items to share including a half order of the Peking Duck, cucumber salad, soup dumplings, string beans, eggplant, Tony's chicken, and prawns with crispy pepper. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed all the dishes, and my personal favorites were the prawns, Tony's chicken, and the string beans. The eggplant was cooked perfectly, but I thought there was just a little bit too much sauce drowning out the eggplant. Though, I will say all the dishes we got were a hit with the group. The dishes were all very flavorful and steaming hot on arrival. The prawns were large with lots of meat and had a lot of texture from the crispy pepper and crunchy peanuts -- this was particularly memorable. Our server Jonathan took great care of our group throughout the night and was attentive, funny, and friendly. He provided useful information about the menu items, which helped guide us in making our choices! Overall, we had a great evening at Lao Sze Chuan. Wow you MUST come for the weekend dumplings. We came around 12 on a Saturday and the place was empty. We received excellent service and the food came out quickly. Came back to Lao Sze Chuan for a family-style dinner and had a much better experience than their dim sum! This was a great choice for a big party because we were able to try several dishes, including the Peking duck which was a special treat. My favorite dishes were the eggplant with garlic sauce and mapo tofu. The menu is quite diverse with many options from authentic to Chinese-American cuisine. Most of the dishes we tried were authentic and tasty. I do still think some of the menu items are overpriced ($15 for a pot of tea is preposterous in Chinese cuisine!), so beware. Our table was located next to their karaoke room which was not fully soundproof, and I will say the soundtrack of other people's bad singing did dampen my dining experience, especially one that is trying to be upscale. read more

Very interesting joint. Upscale Asian fare. Kinda like PF Changs, only better. The three that were with me all ordered traditional Chinese dishes and all were very, very good. In particular, my wife had the lemon crispy shrimp which were delicious. I went off the reservation and tried something new, the Extremely Spicy Szechuan Boiled Fish Fillet. I didn't want the fish looking at me, as they do have a whole sea bass, too, but this was delicious, and could have fed the whole table for $28. Now typically when I get something out that is 'spicy', it's a joke of a spice. Not this sonofabitch! It was delicious and had a great spicy flavor. If you bit into one for the floating red peppers, it's lights out! I must have had 3 or 4 pieces and was done. The waiter laughed and said yeah, he should have told me they were really hot. Regarding the service, our server was very friendly and attentive at first. Took our order quickly and brought the drinks. Took a bit longer than it should have to get the food, and even longer to get the check. First Ohio branch of a popular upscale Chinese restaurant based in Chicago. Definitely recommend reservations, as there has been a significant wait (even for two people!) on weekends. Outdoor seating not yet open, but the verdant patio is definitely a vibe. A great place for special occasions, but the price point is above what I'd be willing to pay for takeout (now available). Parking is free in the various Pinecrest parking areas, subject to availability on weekends when events are occurring in the shopping district. The decor is a sleek blend of modern design with traditional Chinese accents, with every piece shipped from China. Despite being relatively new, everything was operating very smoothly even during our visit on week two of opening. The staff is about half Chinese-fluent and half non-Chinese, with a similar clientele. Making for a very fun people-watching experience. The ambiance is definitely on the swankier side of Chinese dining, with hefty chopsticks, charger plates, and napkin rings - incorporating a little bit of Western design. The decor even extends to the bathrooms, located behind an opaque glass wall. Soothing earthy colors, solid wooden doors, and no-touch wave-to-flush toilets are thus far still in pristine condition. The only two things that seemed out of place were the music (a blend of pop and light EDM) and the paper tablecloths (layered to make it easy to rip away for the next customers). Although, to be honest the paper table covering is a classic Chinese restaurant quirk. For large parties, there are several private rooms available to reserve. Our waiter was super attentive, giving us recommendations and some time to look over the (hefty Chinese-English) menu, and suggesting that we place an order for the Peking duck first if we planned to order it since it takes a while to prepare. They don't have many liquors, but several beer and wine options and soft drinks are up for grabs. Presentation of dishes is intricate, particularly the Peking Duck. The Chef's Special Duck Soup was comforting and light, and Wonton Soup loaded with two fat, juicy wontons. We very much enjoyed the Chef's Special Dry Chili Chicken and Half Set of the Peking Duck. The duck is cooked to tender perfection and served with a traditional set of plum sauce, rice wrappers, and cucumbers, with a side of fried duck skin with brown sugar. If you've never had roast duck before and like fattier meats, this is certainly a showstopper piece for the table. I was also pleasantly surprised by the Crab Soup Dumplings, a different spin on the traditional pork filling, which were perfectly soup-y and had a generous proportion of filing to wrapper. Though I found the Chengdu Mapo Tofu too salty for my taste, this was the SO's favorite, and this will definitely raise the heat. read more

So much so that there are Peking Duck Groupons in the area but this is a first for Ohio and Cleveland. This location took over a large and open patio bar building for the largest Lao Sze I have ever seen with a full bar, open concept dining room seating and several private rooms for celebrations including karaoke! It is like they brought a main city Chinatown feel to the area and I am here for it. Glad to get in before the New year rush, our waiter was great and answered all of my questions before we ordered. It was good to get in before the rush around 4-5pm though it is the downtime for the staff too. The food was soooo good as well and no we did not finish all of it. Our whole fish, noodles, and duck fried rice entrees lasted four days later and were well worth the price. The fish was about $30, the noodles $12, and the fried rice special was $24. Next time we are in Cleveland, I will think about going here for a family dinner and introducing his family to how we do it in Chicago Chinatown! read more

I've been to this Lao Sze Chuan twice now, once for brunch and once for dinner: Brunch-we got their dim sum menu obviously, including their soup dumplings which were actually quite flavorful. Dinner-we got the classic Sze Chuan fish in chili oil stew, in addition to their Yu Xiang eggplant and their cold chicken. The fish and chicken were very good, but egg plant could have used less sugar and a little bit more spice. Overall a very solid, clean spot. This place was super over priced and bland at best. You can get better service and better tasting food at half the cost elsewhere. There were 5 of us. We ordered 4 different entrees, each one was worse than the next. We ordered veggie dumplings that tasted like a mush-of-nothing and spicy cucumber appetizer and that was the most basic but semi-tasty thing on the menu. We ordered two diet cokes, that came when the check came - even though we asked people walking by if we could have them. We ordered GF chicken fried rice, which was below average taste. Garlic chicken which was bland, chewy, and had ZERO garlic flavor. Sesame chicken which was so breaded that there seemed to be no chicken inside of it and had a taste of pure sweetness rather than complex flavor. The beef dish was spicy Mongolian beef, which has no spice. was so chewy I wouldn't have given it to a dog, and it has slivers of veggies in it that were so overcooked they were disintegrating. The waitress never came over to check on us. When we were ready for the check and she asked us about our experience, and we told her, the manager came over. She thought she was doing us a favor by removing the dumplings from the check. What a complete and total discontent from the service to the food. Avoid this place. read more

The service is the part that was hard for us. We had a very nice server but we had 6 people and every time we ordered anything - drinks, appetizer or entrees there were always 2 people who didn't get what they ordered until we were onto the next course. Made it awkward for all of us as we tried to wait and share and be polite but at some point we just had to start drinking or eating. Finally drinks came and finally entrees came but it nearly ruined our experience. We had to ask about the status of each of these - it would be one thing if we're told up front about them straggling behind but that wasn't the case. I was really disappointed about this. We had 6 people not 16... it can't be that hard to get things to come out at once. In my experience, this establishment appears to be poorly managed, and in my opinion, it is operated by individuals who lack a fundamental understanding of running a restaurant. I placed a takeout order two hours in advance and confirmed a pickup time over the phone. When I arrived at the scheduled time, the hostess said she would check on my order. After waiting for about 20 minutes, a man took over at the host stand. I explained the situation to him, and he curtly informed me that the restaurant was overwhelmed with orders and I'd have to wait, despite my advanced call. Less than a minute later, my food was brought to the host stand, and the man--who turned out to be the manager--handed it to me. The receipt was stapled to the bag, indicating they had charged my card. Over the following weeks, while I was in the middle of moving, renovating, and dealing with the holiday season, I began receiving calls from the restaurant. The manager and owners repeatedly contacted me to tell me I hadn't paid. I explained each time that I was moving and would check my statement when I could. Once my move was complete, I reviewed my card statement and confirmed that the charge had not gone through. I called back and paid the amount owed. The manager thanked me for my "integrity" but offered no apology for the repeated calls despite my prior explanations. As a thank you for calling and paying, they gave me a gift card worth about 9% of my meal's total value. While I accepted it, I doubt I'll use it, as I don't plan to return. To recap: they mishandled the timeliness of my pickup order, failed to process my payment, badgered me with calls despite my situation, and offered a token gift card as an apology. Meanwhile, RED Steakhouse across the street is a fantastic restaurant I frequent that offers a vastly superior experience in every way. I see no reason to come back. read more
