When Richmond Mall was in decline, and then closed, and then the Pandemic hit, a lot of stores in that neighborhood also closed or barely hung on. That included a once thriving Chinese restaurant on Richmond Road right across of the Mall, Hunan East. Since 2020, it was limited to take out only. Hunan East is back as a full service restaurant for the first time since the beginning of the Pandemic! It has new very experienced ownership, and the food is OUTSTANDING! If it's not on the menu they will make it by request. For example, they made me the best Hot and Sour Soup I've ever had. Because I don't eat pork, they made steamed pot stickers stuffed with chicken and vegetables. On the menu, a first for us, Chicken with Chinese Egg Plant was delicious. We plan to eat our way through this new menu!

Here's my gripe with Hunan East.. The food is average, at best. These recent 4 and 5 star reviews are fake! Trust me on that. The issue I have is when I use my debit card, the owners tell me that I must be charged a fee to use my card. They explain this to me EVERY TIME- that they get charged a fee, so they must charge me as a result. But isn't that the cost of owning a business?! The fee also depends on the amount of the order and these fees are never posted. They peek behind the counter and come up with some random number. So that random fee turns into their tip! I won't be returning.

I LOVE Hunan East!!! They are one of my favorite restaurants to eat at and it's great for dine in or takeout! I really enjoy the tea they serve when dining in. :) I'm vegan and they have options for everyone! I love their eggplant tofu from the Chinese menu. My photo is from a recent takeout order. The staff is really friendly too. Anyway, I would highly recommend Hunan East for your next meal out, so check them out! :)

Not bad; huge serving sizes and cheap enough but rather bland. The kung Palo chicken had almost no spice to it.

Unlike most other cuisines, with which I am extremely adventurous and not only willing, but look forward to trying new things and experimenting. I am a bit timid with Asian cuisine. I find it a bit challenging to navigate their typically extensive menus. Based on a recommendation from a foodie I hold in high regard, we went to "Han Chinese Kabob & Grill" last night. I was informed it is a small establishment so we called for reservations. We were told they do not take them and to be assured of a table we should arrive early. So we showed up before 6pm to a basically empty restaurant. We were seated quickly by a pleasant young woman that spoke no English at all. When we ask a question she went off right away to find our server for help. Within the next 15 minutes the dining room went from empty to full like someone had thrown a switch. It remained that way the entire time we were there. Very soon a wonderful young woman arrived at our table. She provided water, answered several questions, and took our orders. She was very pleasant and professional. I ordered an excellent brown sugar milk tea along with a great cucumber salad and marvelous lamb chops. Some of the meatiest chops I have ever had. Just about everything is available with any level of heat you desire. I am typically very reserved when it comes to spicy foods. I find it hides the true flavors of the ingredients so I always order with no heat. My entire meal was prepared perfectly. My wife and our guests felt the same way about their selections. There was plenty of food to take home for another meal. Our final surprise was when we received our bill and discovered how affordable it was to eat so well. We had an excellent experience and enjoyed our stay very much. We will definitely return.

I have been coming to this restaurant in many variations, owners and names, but it still remains consistently delicious and authentic. The decor is so moms, non existent really, there are menu pictures on the wall, Payne Avenue is always under construction or lacking enough storefronts but I will always come home to eat. The egg drop soup, I know it's simple, but it's full of yolk and large pieces of egg, especially if you hit it with white pepper for an extra punch. The beef with spicy green beans are full of flavor, tender and the best I town. The pan fried noodles, tonight we ordered 2 different variations, veggie full of s variety of mushrooms and the seafood full of Chinese broccoli l, shrimp, scallops and garlic, the perfect consistency of crunchy with a little bit of saucy noodles. A visit is never complete without dim sum, shrimp rice roll will always be my all time favorite. I never remember to take pictures, we are too busy laughing and eating to have our phones out.

Seeing beef throat and intestines mentioned was a cue this place was legit. And it was. Tried a bunch of different things. Fried string beans (green beans) were fire. I didn't think I'd get excited about green beans, but these were excellent. The crispy fish was also really good. Loved the slightly chewy texture. Very flavorful. Garlic dumplings were steamed, which I love. Garlic chicken was good although I prefer larger pieces of chicken (they come in small bits). No negative though, just my personal pref. The double fried pork rice was good, although not as flavorful as the other dishes. Honestly, a touch of salt was probably all it needed. Highly recommend this place. Very solid.

Fried fish pieces in chili oil with ginger, celery, and onion. It's not too spicy except when you get a big piece of ginger. You can tell they use good quality fish. I also ordered an iced tea and was happily surprised to get a delicious and unique Asian brand iced tea and not a generic US brand. It was the perfect complement for the spicy fish. Even the white rice was special. You can tell when rice has been sitting for a long time, and this was not. It was cooked perfectly, was a little sticky and moist. The only downside is that door dash has me select 2 crab Rangoon or 1 egg roll to go with it, and the rangoons didn't come along with my order. That could have been user error. I would definitely come back if ever visiting Cleveland again.

If you're looking for cheap Chinese just outside of Ohio City, there's nowhere better to go. While…read morethe building may not be the prettiest, the neighborhood not the world's safest late at night, and the interior decor not the prettiest, that doesn't change the fact that they offer KILLER Americanized Chinese food. It was around 10pm on a Sunday and I hadn't eaten since lunchtime. I was back in my hometown of CLE for work, so I figured why not try out a spot from my old stomping grounds on the west side. General Tso's was piping hot (I always get mine super spicy) and was quite flavorful, especially with their homemade sauce. The egg roll was straight up massive and one of the biggest that I've been given in years. All in all, if you're looking for gourmet food and candlelit tables, this ain't the spot. However, if you're looking for near elite level cheap Chinese, this is undoubtedly worth checking out.

Laughable. Absolutely laughable…read more I genuinely cannot remember the last time I had to try this hard to GIVE a business my money. My friend and I stood at the front of this establishment on a Saturday night, staring at a glowing OPEN sign, practically begging for someone to acknowledge our existence so we could place an order. Apparently, that was too much to ask. There appeared to be one person working (I think?), who somehow managed to completely ignore both the front of the business AND the ringing phone. No greeting, no acknowledgment, no explanation. Nothing. Just two potential paying customers standing around like idiots, wondering if we had accidentally walked into an abandoned building. Here's the truly astonishing part: We actually WANTED to support this small business. We went out of our way to give them our money, and they seemingly went out of their way to make sure that didn't happen. I've seen businesses struggle to attract customers, but this might be the first I've encountered that actively seems to avoid them. If you're not interested in serving customers, turn off the OPEN sign. At least spare people the embarrassment of standing around waiting to spend money at a business that apparently couldn't care less. An absolutely embarrassing display of customer service. And the funniest part? We never even got far enough to order anything.
