China Gate is Chinese restaurant in South Euclid. You'll find it at Cedar Center North Plaza. It's a convenient stop if you're shopping nearby. Also, a central destination if you're tracking from South Euclid, Cleveland Heights, or Beachwood. I was craving Chinese food for dinner and stopped here for takeout. It won't be by regular takeout destination. AMBIANCE: China Gate is a takeout only place. The restaurant is very small and not so clean. Half of the restaurant and seating is obstructed by random boxes and storage. There are three tiny tables inside. The chairs and tables are affixed to each other with little room between the two. It's impossible to sit comfortably. It was very uncomfortable to even sit and wait for takeout. Dining in is not a good option. FOOD: The menu is multi-page containing options like combo plates, soups, fried rice, lo mein, and other familiar favorites. Spicy dishes are clearly denoted in the menu. There is a pink sheet with up charges for items - oil, soy sauce, fortune cookies, and others. I ordered Sesame Seed Chicken Combo Plate ($14) and Wonton Soup ($6.50). There were plenty of problems with my order. The main one being it wasn't quite my order. Sesame Seed Chicken Combo Plate comes with pork fried rice and egg roll. My order came with small white rice, no egg roll. There was a generous portion of chicken (container full) but it was awful. It was not a cohesive dish. Some pieces were very dry, others too soggy. Some were sweet, others a bit sour. The chicken was not evenly coated in sesame seed and honey sauce. So it was essentially half sauced. The sauce tasted like honey from honey bear container that was extremely diluted. The sesame seeds tasted slightly burned. The entire dish was bland - not sweet, not salty, nothing. Won Ton soup was not good. The broth was considerably darker than similar soup at other places. There was too much onion. The won tons had a lot of dough and teeny tiny meat pieces inside. Single pieces of meat were nice but they were too fatty. Overall, the soup was too concentrated/dark soup base but also lacking flavor. SERVICE: Service was chaotic. I walked in to place an order in person. The employee took orders of multiple people calling in before acknowledging me. I was standing right in front of her. She was raising her voice at customers on the phone and almost arguing about what the orders contained. I will say that there were lots of questions asked to ensure that the orders were right on the phone. Average wait time provided was 10-15 minutes. My order was up very quickly. Overall, I found service to be very unwelcoming and too animated. SOUVENIRS: Cute glass and ceramic Chinese horoscope figurines are available at the counter. It is unclear if they are for sale, no prices are listed on them. PARKING: Large parking lot is available at this plaza. Plenty of places to park. I was pretty disappointed with my visit. I didn't get the right order. My order was not tasty at all. I'll sound silly, but after tasting my meal, I strongly considered immediately going to another Chinese restaurant for another takeout. I will not be returning because no part of my visit was satisfying. read more

Not the same as the old China Gate. It was always dependable for great Chinese Food. The $15 ribs /6 ribs were days old or overcooked and soaked in sauce to cover the old ribs. They were chewy and dry. The Shrimp Egg Foo Young $12/ 3 patties was plentiful but lacked seasoning, overcooked or burnt, gravy was spot on. Ive been there 3 times in the last few years and have been disappointed before. and this was my last. I skipped Ho Wah due to much higher prices, but regretted it later. I ordered take out on a Sunday late afternoon. I'm willing to concede that maybe that isn't the best time to expect fresh food. I got vegetable egg foo young and beef with peppers and onions. It was the family dinner which comes with a variety of other things. I usually love egg foo young, but I have to say this was the worst egg foo young I have ever eaten. It was a soggy mess mostly comprised of mushy bean sprouts and almost nothing else. There was no crunch to it at all. Hardly any egg or any other vegetable, just horrible soggy bean sprouts. The beef with peppers and onions was too salty and the meat was fatty. The pork fried rice was dry and just tasted like old grease, like it was reheated on a dirty griddle. The whole meal tasted like it was not fresh, just old and reheated. I threw almost all of the family sized meal away. It came with two BBQ ribs which were edible, but not great. If this was typical of the food at China Gate now, I would not recommend. I will never go there again. read more

While their food is good, I have to say that I witnessed Angel the owner, be extremely extremely loud and rude to her customers specifically her black customers. I thought this was a one off because I'm only in the Cleveland area about once every three or four months. But when I had a problem with my order, the same, Angel began yelling and screaming through the phone at myself. Her lack of respect, and honoring that the customer is always right, is a huge cultural. Divide for her. Whenever I come here from Washington DC, I like to stop at this restaurant but now I know she exhibits racist tendencies, and her disrespect for the very customers that helped build their livelihood. In my case, there was a discrepancy in my order as well as the price, and she yelled at me. You need to look at the menu. The person that took your order was new they didn't know so you should've looked at the menu. That's only part of the level of her voice And her lack of listening to the person that has paid their money is enough for her business to go under if it keeps happening. If her behavior doesn't change, she will not find success, and if her racist attitudes doesn't change, she will lose the majority of her customers if they value their dignity. I ordered a large amount of food last week, and my family and I became very ill. My children threw up and had the runs for several days.

Every time I come to Cleveland my family and I must stop at China Gate. Great food at a reasonable price.

Bad! Prices are high, but food quality low. Worst egg rolls I have ever eaten, never had egg rolls that were mush on the inside and all I could taste was strong seasoning of black pepper, took one bite and threw the rest away, ham fried rice had plenty of ham but rice was hard. I've lived in the Heights since 1987 and yesterday was my first visit! I'd always assumed it was a cheap, fast-food place, and was prepared for thick, sticky sauces and mediocre quality. I was amazed & so happy to discover instead very tasty, fresh ingredients! The fried tofu & veggies used delicate soft tofu (rather than the usual firm, rubbery stuff), the outside had a thin, tender crust. Shrimp & broccoli had LOTS of large shrimp. And most delighted to find the veggie egg foo young full of fresh, large chunks of mushrooms, red peppers and other veggies and fried to tender perfection. And the sauce had a thinner consistency than the often over-thickened, gummy variety at many Chinese restaurants. The vegetables were plentiful, mostly broccoli and carrots with a few baby corns, pea pod and bok choy. My only wish is that the broccoli be left a little crisper. Although the overcooking may have just been from sitting in the container, as we were a little late picking it up and waited a bit in line. An earlier review complained that they use MSG, but I did not have any adverse reaction, so maybe no longer use it? I hope they do not! There was a line to the door of the small, takeout-only place. Easily the worst Chinese place I have ever had. I couldn't tell if the General Tso was Sweet & Sour or General Tso. I do not recommend this restaurant. The chicken was legitimate mystery meat and had little to no crisp in every bite. As you can see in the picture, every piece of chicken is almost as long as an adolescent's hand. The egg rolls were old I had a late order. They were soggy not crispy and had a slight smell to them and the wax paper bag you couldn't tell that it had 3 egg rolls they were stuck together. End of business leftover food no good at all. I called to express my concerns on hold 15 minutes and then they hung up. I am not pleased with the way they handled this issue. I had been a well satisfied customer for over 40 years, but won't go to China Gate anymore. Not only did they refuse to give me a receipt, but when I called in a complaint, they ran me off the phone without caring about my issue! This is NOT the way they used to be, restaurant lovers of Chinese cuisine! The Dinner for Two is well-priced, they rest of the food was good, but the Orange Chicken was very hard and appeared to have been pre-cooked, which ruined its taste. I ate there quite a bit because the food is good, plentiful and inexpensive. HOWEVER, the counter staff and cook staff do not wear masks and the waiting customers do not social distance which the owners ignore. Great food Kung pow chicken was very flavorful so we're the pot stickers and the shrimp fried rice had really big shrimp. Roommate had Orange chicken. Only bad thing was the cashier. She had a bad attitude. When we got our food she yelled at us, you can't eat hear only takeout. So we took our our food and went across the street and had a picnic. Alright. They aren't too busy for us anymore, so we've tried the food here twice, now updating my review. It's okay. It's your typical Americanized Chinese fare, with some good dishes and some not so good. The lo mein noodles are fairly standard and tasted decent enough. The happy family combination was also cooked well. On the other hand, the orange chicken was overbreaded and the pieces of chicken were way too large, so it did not soak in the orange flavor properly. The egg rolls were supposed to have pork and shrimp in them but there was so little meat that they tasted like vegetarian egg rolls. So yes, sort of hit and miss, but I don't expect much from Americanized Chinese food, so I'll probably order from here again. As long as they don't shoo me away again. read more

A great little gem tucked away in university heights area. Their food is very tasty! My wife and I are a huge fan of their general tso's chicken. And we all love their dumplings. Want to tell the people this is the best take out Chinese in the area. Wonton soup is loaded with noodles, pork and is very tasty!! Sweet and Sour Pork was tasty and light on the breading tasting mostly chicken bites and sweet and sour sauce. We asked them not to include green peppers in order. We also ordered beef and broccoli. Very good!! The fried rice is good when reheating suggest to add little water cause it gets dry. The egg rolls and ribs with the combination dinner for 2 filled us up but still had room for our meal. Have tried the Lo Mien which is okay have had better but mostly everything else is very good. We had leftovers for a couple days. High recommend and call up cause your dinner will be ready in less then 30 mins. read more

Incredibly generous portions at a reasonable price. An entree with a side of rice will feed you for the better part of a week. They are fast and reliable even when they are busy. The food is good with all of the usuals that you would expect for Chinese takeout. I usually order the crab rangoon, sesame chicken which is sweet and savory, and vegetable lo mein. This used to be my favorite Chinese spot, until yesterday. I used to come here as a child when their Pegi al location was a dine in restaurant. The original owners cared about the food quality and their customers. It's now under new ownership and to say the least....a lot has changed. I ordered 3 egg rolls (which they no longer carry shrimp or pork, just a mixture of both) and a large hot and sour soup. My eggrolls were good as usual, but my hot and sour soup had an extra ingredient in it (large mosquito) that I almost thought was a piece of ear wood fungus. Outside of the appetizers and fried rice, just avoid eating here. I really miss the previous owners and the quality of the food. read more

After all these years....tonight's meal was a "0" on all accounts and management could care less....the ribs were solid fat and the sauce blah at best...the fried rice and egg roll were obviously cooked in a rancid oil because the swill was un-edible....the best part of the meal was tossing most of it in the garbage and swearing not to return...managements response was to order something else next time...hey...there is no next time read more

Easily one of the best Chinese spots in Cleveland. I only had there lunch and it was at very nice price with huge portions of food. Everything was made fresh which is a good thing. But, tonight my daughter found a Plastic Zip Tie in her egg roll!!
