Some context before the disappointment: I'm from Los Angeles, which means I have opinions about chili dogs that were formed in the crucible of Pink's lines and late-night Carney's runs and every chili-slicked paper boat handed through a window on Western Avenue at 1am. An LA chili cheese dog has oomph. It has a snappy dog under chili that means something, a structural crisis in your hands, a napkin emergency. This is my heritage and my bias, declared upfront. And the chili dog itself has a real history, which is worth knowing because it explains what the dish is supposed to be. The American chili dog tradition largely traces back to Greek and Macedonian immigrants in the early twentieth century, who took the New York hot dog and topped it with a spiced, Mediterranean-inflected meat sauce -- and then spread the gospel through the industrial Midwest. Detroit's coney islands -- American and Lafayette, side by side downtown, feuding for a century -- built the canonical version: a natural-casing frank with snap, a loose all-meat beanless chili, yellow mustard, chopped onion. You have to stop. That's the whole contract of the American road trip: the sign says world famous, you pull over. I ordered the chili dog. It arrived open-faced. With a fork. The hot dog was chopped into sections, pre-solved, the entire delicious problem of how to eat a chili dog eliminated before I could even confront it. Chili with beans, chopped onion, cheddar, sour cream -- a composition that reads fine on paper. And then I took a bite and encountered the central mystery of the Langlois frankfurter: it has no snap, because the frankfurters are peeled. On purpose. This is apparently part of the legend. The result is a smooth, soft, casing-free dog that offers no resistance and, to my palate, not much else. The chili was bland. The sour cream, which I'd assumed was there to cool some spice, had nothing to cool -- milquetoast offsetting milquetoast. And everything arrived at room temperature. The chili, the dog, the sour cream, all of it occupying the same tepid middle ground, a chili dog with no thermal narrative whatsoever. I had this same experience at Casper's in Oakland, and I'll ask the same question I asked then: what is the point of a bland chili cheese dog? The entire dish is an argument for excess. A hundred years of immigrant sauce-makers and midnight counters didn't build this tradition so we could eat it lukewarm with a fork. Now, fairness requires me to note: the famous order at Langlois is not the chili dog. It's the mustard dog -- the frankfurter with Muriel Sweet's homemade sweet mustard, a recipe dating to 1981 when the market started feeding sawmill workers and truckers. That's the dog that built the legend. I didn't order it. Maybe the mustard redeems the peeled frank. Maybe the whole thing only makes sense as a unit. But a chili dog on the menu is a promise, and this one wasn't kept. read more

Based on the recommendation of a coworker, I recently stopped at this place on my way north on 101. Much to my surprise, the classic dog he told me to get was one of the most unique, and BEST hot dogs I've ever had! First off, they're short and fat, so if you have an appetite you might want to order two. Second, they're served with pickles, onions, and a house made sauce that is amazing. The dog itself has a texture which is slightly on the softer side, and the flavor is amazing! Finally, in spite of the fact that it was my first time ever in Langlois, everyone at the market treated me like I was a long-awaited friend. I loved it! They have so many things on the menu I want to try, that I'm glad my new job will bring me by this place on a regular basis from now on. We live in San Francisco and love to travel up and down the CA and Oregon coast. We were recently told of Langlois Market by a friend who moved here and decided to visit. Of all the places in Oregon we've been through along the 101, the 5, and the 97, I have found no where else has staff as friendly as Langlois Market. Everyone who helped us with our hot food orders and the cashiers were just super nice, and they were very patient with our children as well. Our boys loved the hot dogs (without toppings), and we loved our fully loaded hot dogs especially the house mustard. I had to get another hot dog for the road. The road dog was messy but worth it. There are bunch of picnic tables on a grassy field behind the market to enjoy your lunch and the kids/dogs can stretch their legs. We found there was a plethora of other local goodies including hot sauces, wines, jerky, and jams. Unlike some other markets, Langlois is Apple Pay friendly and we had no issues with our several transactions, so don't worry about cash. Coming back down south from the Columbia River, we stopped by Langlois Market again to load up on some goodies. My only knock was the t-shirts didn't come in size M - only XL and 2XL, but I can understand that I'm not the target clientele. See you in 6 months! read more

Saw the sign for their hot dogs and had to stop and see and taste for ourselves if what the Yelp reviews said were true. Verdict: YES! We got a chili dog (minus onions) and two plain dogs (thought about adding a slice of bacon to go with). The chili dog came with finely shredded cheese and topped with sour cream. It was also nice that they sliced the hot dog to make it easy to eat in individual portions (they provide you with a fork and knife wrapped in napkins). I would suggest buying a small bag of corn chips to scoop up the chili dog and mound of toppings to stretch out the meal. Didn't think of taking a picture, but believe me, it was tasty! read more

Made my first trip to the Langlois Market 12/4/23 from Florence about 88 miles. Bought 2 hot dogs, a chilli dog with extra onions and no cheese, and plain hot dog with their excellent mustard, pickles and onions. The chilli was very good, but both the chilli and the hot dog were lukewarm warm at best, it was approximately 11:00 am so it seems that everything should have been up to a better temperature. The hot dog had a good flavour but not being up to a better heat took away from the quality. The plain dog was not up to a good eating temperature and not even close to enough mustard or onions, pickles were ok. Overall the taste was ok on both but the temperature took away from the overall quality , I might go back for another visit but will ask that the product be better prepared. read more

I love how unique this hot dog is with the use of the special mustard, which tastes absolutely incredible, and the homemade pickles are to die for. The portion size and price are appropriate, and this hot dog is not one that you would expect to get from a market in the middle of nowhere. My family traveled over 80 miles round trip for these hot dogs, and we would travel over 80,000 miles for these delicious bundles of joys. Not to mention, the staff of this little establishment is also worth the travel. Their friendliness and efficiency makes you feel at home. I got a regular hot dog and my wife got the super dog. The regular hot dog was great for under $5. Tasted better than what i've had at other places at a higher price.
