It breaks my heart that Langenstein's has been bought out by Roberts Fresh Market. Langenstein's always had my hard to find items at all three locations. The people were always polite, friendly and helpful. I live across the highway from the River Ridge location, which will close entirely. It's quite a feat and amazing this store has been around for 100 years. Zapp's chips are my favorite. They are kettle cooked, super crunchy and so many folded chips, which is my favorite kind of chip, if at all. I would say 90% of the chips are folded in this bag. They have a shelf dedicated to all things Zapp's here. No flamin hot cheese purse for me this trip. They have the sweet Carolina Cheetos, which my husband wanted to try out. I might take a pass. Found some Sambal sauce down the Asian food aisle. Not a big assortment of items otherwise. read more

Wow! So this was my first time in the store and I must say, I really enjoyed the experience. Every store employee spoke to me and a few even asked me if they could help me. It has been a looooooong time since I've had that kind of attention while spending money. This store has lots of fresh produce, a bountiful deli section with sushi, salads and lots of prepared meals. I even purchased a shrimp and smoked salmon dip. There's a nice bakery with unique breads along with a meat and seafood section....live lobsters too! The store also has healthier junk food choices and items lol, (if that makes sense), for example, fried sweet potato chips, etc. If you spend over $100, your name goes into a raffle spinner and you can win $100 if your name is drawn. This is a very clean and neat grocery store. They have a variety of prepared food choices. I tried a piece of fish from the hot bar. It was ok. It hit the spot. They have a pretty good wine selection as well. The cashier that helped me was friendly. read more

Wow! This location of the local grocery chain is huge! I sort of had some deja vu when I walked in because I'm pretty sure I bought snacks here when it was a previous grocery... a few decades ago. There is a great selection of prepared food and a hot bar line. I just needed a few things and was able to find all the things. Plus a crab and mushroom quiche. Delicious Service was good and it was a spotless store with ample parking. read more

I'm struggling as I write this review. I love shopping at Langenstein's when I need a few quick items. Plus the fruit and vegetables always look great. The staff are friendly and helpful (except that one time I picked up a sandwich tray and the employee felt the need to let her frustrations out on me). She ended up apologizing, so I let it slide lol. My problem with Langenstein's is the meat department. Twice, I've purchased ground beef that was not the freshest. The first time, the ground beef totally turned bad and grey looking 2 days after my purchase. The second time, I opened the ground beef the day after purchasing. It looked great until I broke it up. Good meat had been mixed with bad meat! That leads me to believe I can't trust anything out of the meat department. I'll continue shopping at Langenstein's, but will no longer purchase any meat items. read more

Customer service is so awesome, yes, it's a bit pricey; however, they value their regular customers. This store is always clean, cashiers are always smiling and there is hardly ever a long wait because the staff are very attentive and quickly open another check out lane . The store managers are always smiling, the deli servers greet you even in the parking lot. I love how the sanitary wipes are always available as soon as you walk in because I'm a hypochondriac. I'm always running in at the last minute before they close (apologetically) and they never rush me and tell me to take my time. Great store and the cooked food is delicious too. read more

Langenstein's has come to River Ridge! If you are familiar with either of the family's two other grocery stores, then you know what to expect here. I like the quality and the quantity of their prepared foods section. When you want restaurant type food but don't feel like going to a restaurant, come visit and see what they have to offer. Or you can settle for their salads and soups. I always find something to take home. Don't expect midnight snacks as they close at 9 pm, except for the 8 pm closing on Sunday. Plenty of parking. Plenty of friendly staff to help you find what you are looking for. Definitely ups the game for grocery stores in the area. read more

Langenstein's is the nearest grocery to my house so it's my go to when I'm in a pinch and need something on the fly. The prices are a bit high so I tend to not do my major grocery haul there. The store is not huge so while it has all the essentials; it doesn't pack in a lot of options in terms of brands. I.e. they don't carry Ben and Jerry's pints, but stock plenty of blue bell. They carry plenty of local produce and products which is a plus. Where Langenstein's really shines is their prepared foods section. It tastes homemade like your mom and dem made it. The crab cakes are excellent and a go to when I need dinner, but don't feel like making a full on meal. I also love all the chicken salads for a quick lunch. The dips are great when you need to entertain people and short on time. Also, dips are an acceptable dinner. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise. The workers have always been very friendly and gotta love the short lines at check out. Something about being if you want paper or plastic is just really nice. PS. On Fridays they do 10% off wines. Wine prices are comparable to rouses and other local grocery stores. Sometimes cheaper if you catch a random sale. read more

Another small, locally owned chain of stores. Stopped in last night AFTER a bourbon tasting at a different store. The inside is laid out well and their hot and cold deli area is square and nicely set-up. They also had a very nice man being Santa who greeted everyone at the door and did the Santa's Lap thing for the kid. Once again, a bit more expensive than Rouses but I do like the layout. On the way out, poor Santa looked longingly at the 6 pack of Guinness we bought. read more

If been watching, since fall, as they renovated this place. Their opening was announced with a postcard in the mail to River Ridge and Harahan addresses. It felt smaller than I expected for being in such a huge building. The prices are rather high, but the prepared foods are what I would go back for. I tried their artichoke-feta balls which I liked. They had both flavor of artichokes and feta, I bought their cole slaw which is sweet, the "better cheddar" which I used to love, but this didn't taste as good as I remember from the Metarie location (huge chunks of cheese, nuts, instead of the smoother blend I remember). I also tried the mushroom spread which was good ( mushrooms, cream cheese, sour cream, spices) which I've never seen elsewhere. There were a wide variety of soups and other prepared foods. The rest of the standard grocery offerings were rather limited and expensive, so I likely won't go there except for the prepared/deli items. I am not a local, but I work in the River Ridge area. A colleague of mine introduced me to this store about 6 months ago, and I've been in there almost every day since. I never, ever, walk out of there without purchasing something. I frequent the prepared food for lunch. THE LIVER is my favorite. OMG! So very good. I have purchased food to take home to the Northshore with me for dinner. I purchase all of my work snacks there. The atmosphere is fantastic. I've never entered that store without a "Hello, how are you". Amazing, I tell you, simply amazing. read more

All of their locations are great but my favorite is the one in Old Metairie. The store is beautiful and the prepared foods are very good. The staff are helpful, but I did have a bad experience with a cashier. Not only was she rude, but she had on so much perfume that I had to use my emergency asthma inhaler. When I got home I had to "wash" my groceries, cans and all, because she had handled them and I could still smell her perfume. I will continue to go there because I like the store, but will try to avoid this employee! read more

Langenstein's is a lovely little grocery store. This location is pretty small, but they managed to pack loads of stuff in here. There is a large prepared food section which is extremely convenient. There is a smaller vegetable section than other places, but I have noticed what they carry is fresh and I'd never hesitate to buy produce here. The meat selection is amazing for such a small store, I'd make the trip to the store just for this. The wine/beer section is also well stocked on the cold selection as well as room temperature. Be aware it's going to cost you a little more than some other stores, but it's not that big of a difference to where you will gasp at the prices. Plus, on Fridays wine is discounted! I've taken advantage of this a couple times. Overall this is a great little grocery. Keep in mind it's on the small side so they don't have as wide a variety as some other stores, but that's no reason to pass it up. Very friendly atmosphere and very fresh produce. The prepared foods will knock your socks off. (My wife goes nuts for the salmon dip.) When I have gone and they didn't have something I was looking for, I let someone in customer service know, and the next time I went, it was there. I have two small girls, and the employees (particularly the man behind the seafood counter) are always very sweet to them. (My oldest saw a lobster fight there once, and now makes a beeline to the seafood counter whenever we go to see if it will happen again.) Did not honor add in paper. Cashier acted rude. No way to treat a customer when paper has a add you should honor it. After all we sometimes go out of our way to get that special add. Store atmosphere is great, food selection is fine, and there are no qualms about the quality of the goods; but they are very pricey. The prepared food is well below restaurant grade, but edible; although greatly overpriced. I do not see that it is any better than the offerings at Winn-Dixie or Breaux Mart. It's the customer relations that is the real problem; the cashier was as friendly as a cold rain; the grocery bagger packed my styrofoam food container in the bag sideways, so the lasagna, mashed potatoes and cheese /broccoli became a single entre.' On top of that, I got a Scott towel from the guy behind the service desk, to try to salvage the mess that was my $15.00 meal, and their the three of them were, ignoring me without so much as a word. I am the type who if someone apologizes to me about something, I'll say, "forget about it." But the mindless zombies only ignored me, probably just waiting for me to go away. Since it was a store employee that ruined my meal, I expected someone to take it from me and offer me to make another one; that wasn't going to happen, so I left. I usually call manager in these instances but, you know, I just hate to have to do it. There is nothing so exclusive offered at Langenstein's (except higher prices) that I ever have to go back there again. After all the time and expense of putting up that store, you would think that they might endeavor to promote positive customer relations with the surrounding community.
