Our landscaping project has finally finished. We hired Darryl as the architect and he worked with a landscaping company to carry out the entire project. He collected our initial requirements and came back with three plans. We quickly decided on one of them and iterated through a couple of times. We have redone the front yard, side yard and backyard (kept the existing swimming pool.) We now have a sustainable front yard with huge rocks with artificial grass that our neighbors told me how great it looked. The backyard is extended with travertine tiles, added a new BBQ kitchen island, a water feature, a huge shade sail and two feature walls to create an intimate entertaining space. We hired Darryl, the owner of Landscape Nirvana, to perform a complete redo of our backyard. The flat lot is long and narrow and extends between a building on either end. Mature oak trees cover about half the area. We were looking for a couple of things: a plan for a long pathway to connect the living quarters at either end of the lot that would be visually appealing and practical, and a comprehensive plan for low maintenance drought tolerant plantings. Aside from the oak trees, all other plants were removed, so pretty much a blank slate. Our meetings with Darryl were very productive and fun The three alternate plans he presented were very helpful in coming up with a final concept. What Darryl brings to the table, among other things, is a clear concept of what the installed landscape will look like. It is hard for the average homeowner to look at a paper plan and visualize it. When the wonderful crew of installers were finished, we marveled at the way all the elements came together for a truly harmonious whole. We have just completed our landscape remodel, Darryl did his magic and transformed our space to be much more functional. First we sit down and discuss what our vision is, then he came up with 3 drawings. We narrowed down to one. Then he helped us select a contractor, Gus. Gus, team and him work very well together. The yard and fence project was done over a year ago, but I was rather busy at the juncture of changing jobs so I didn't write a review until now. The craftsmanship is very disappointing. Upon completion, the fence door won't open and close properly and the fence wall is leaning outwards. The person who did the task had to come back twice to fix issues. For the door, he attached a string across the corners to tighten the door and that string has to remain there forever. He did charge me for that tool and his gas. For the fence, he argued that the fault is with the post (a long piece of wood bought from Home Depot) and it is likely that the piece of wood was not completely dry so it gave away with the pressure from the inside. And for this he has "no fix". During the process I had a couple email communication with the owner Darryl. He replied to the first couple email during "his vacation" and never followed up on my request to have a phone call and come over to the site and take a look. I tried to be very objective here. I didn't keep any close-up pictures but with these you can see the gaps and distortions clearly. I won't recommend working with Landscape Nirvana. read more

Then he got a a bid from a landscape construction company and I signed it. It took awhile before the work could be started but I am thrilled with the results. We just finished a pretty significant backyard redesign project with Darryl. It turned out amazing! From the beginning when I met Darryl, I could tell he is very thoughtful and detail oriented with his work. He showed us multiple options/designs based on our preferences, and did many iterations on the design as we went through the process. It was hard for us to visualize exactly how the yard would look, and Darryl helped walk us through that process very nicely. It included plant designs/locations, hardscape, irrigation and lighting. He took my request to add path lights to the seating area and extended it (with my approval) to encompass spotlights in the creek bed and on two trees. Our entire backyard renovation has just finished and we love our finished product! We can't wait to see it become even more beautiful over the coming years. When we first met with Darryl we had a general idea of what we wanted -- to add enhancements to our existing yard and also to create different looks with water conservation in mind. Darryl presented us with three great plans and we ended up combining two of them. The resulting design incorporated a curvilinear lawn area and a separate Zen garden. Darryl also added a rock river bed that we wanted and specified plants, trees and grass. Darryl supervised the construction and he even lifted and placed some stones himself personally to make them look just right in ideal spots. I am a visual and detailed person and I was always asking Darryl questions. I soon found out that Darryl had already thought out every facet of the installation and had taken care of all my questions. Darryl also introduced us to a great contractor. He and his crew worked hard, were conscientious, and cleaned up after each day's work. The quality of Darryl's work is exceptional. I hired Darryl last summer to help us design our entire landscape. He did the design and plans, gave us a couple of referrals to contact to do the actual physical work, and also helped oversee the project as needed. His prices were fair and were in the upper middle range of the people we talked to. Out of all the people we talked to, I liked Darryl's personality the best. He was respectful, calm, easy going, and friendly. His philosophies on water management were the same as mine as well. After the initial consultation, he quickly turned around a first draft of the overall plan and had a friend of his do a rough estimate on what the cost might be. That really helped us decide what we wanted to proceed with. (we decided to scale down the front yard and just concentrate on the back yard) The plans he drew up were very detailed and his turn-around time was very quick. All of the contractors that we talked to were impressed with the detail of the plans which helped them make an accurate bid. Once we decided to go with one of his referrals, the work proceeded at a good pace and Darryl's involvement was less as we expected. I think he took care of buying the plants and transporting them to the house, but I'm not 100% on that. The only area where I might deduct a half star was when it was time to lay out the plants before they were put into the ground. The contractors laid out the plants as they thought they should go, but I was concerned that they weren't following the plans as Darryl had drawn out. I called Darryl with my concerns and asked him to come by the house and double check their work (even though Darryl was scheduled to leave on vacation the next day). He did come by and sure enough, the majority of the plants weren't in the right locations. I expected Darryl to take care of that without me bugging him about it, so that was my only blip in an otherwise wonderful experience. Now that the landscape has grown into the space, we are enjoying our yards a lot more! Unfortunately, a few of the plants died due to my errors. :( I would definitely recommend Darryl for any landscape design needs. read more

It was a tough space but Daryl developed a number of different options for us including decking, small retaining walls, a rock river (we had a storm drain running down our property), and a comprehensive plan for new plants and trees in both the back and front of our house. Darryl Furuya knew about every aspect of planning and implementing my backyard renovation. He designed the entire layout. He gave me separate drawings for the lighting, the drainage, the hardscape and the plants. He knew what lighting fixtures to buy, what double bullnose bricks to buy to top off the walls, the specs for the gopher wire to put under the planting areas. He hand-selected the rocks to make the planting area more interesting. He even designed and produced custom accent tiles to be embedded in the stucco on the walls. Darryl was wonderful to work with. He was available through the whole 2 months it took to bring his designs into reality. He coordinated smoothly with the cement people, the masons, the electrician. Our back yard is next to a creek and had some nice trees, but the rest was just dead grass and dirt. It also had some challenging sloping and not a ton of room to do the work. It was definitely too much of a challenge for my husband and me, who are normally do-it-yourselfers. Darryl put together three very nice designs for us to choose from, each with a theme and price point, and he kept in mind that we wanted both a drought resistant and colorful yard. He did a beautiful job and we couldn't be happier with the subtle grade change and hardscaping he designed, along with a very nice palette of plants, many of which are flowering now. They really capture the coastal light subtlely but nicely. We now can enjoy our yard and have places to sit within the beautiful landscaping and enjoy it rather than being stuck on a concrete patio. I feel like my backyard is nice enough to show off to our friends during parties. We have regular dragonfly visitors now, but the best thing, really, is having a nice place to sit, cradled under the redwood tree, to look out over the creek and back toward the beautiful flowering but drought resistant plants closer to the house. read more

Darryl had designed our neighbor's yard and we were so impressed by his work that we hired him to tackle a major portion of our back yard. He faced two challenges; creating a drought tolerant landscape and integrating it into the remainder of our yard that has an eclectic planting. He sought out how we would use this area of the back yard and how the garden fits into our lifestyle. We were delighted with his ideas, the plants he chose and his use of color, texture and stone.
