We hired Darryl to design our front and back yards a year ago. I was particular about the design and work to be done, preferring an artistic design that flowed well using California native plants, and requiring quite a bit of hardscape revisions. Darryl's beautiful designs far exceeded our expectations. He was available throughout the project, working closely with the construction company to execute the designs we desired. The work was done efficiently, with excellent communication and periodic reviews. We now have two beautiful gardens that we really enjoy being in daily. We are very grateful for the help he gave us in bringing our dream gardens to life! read more

Landscape Nirvana - 12 years after implementation. - Landscape Architects or Designers Near Me

Darryl is a dedicated, knowledgeable and talented landscape designer. We have a large backyard (about 6k square feet) that was empty or just weeds before. Darryl gave us four beautiful concepts (that he hand draws), and after we chose one, he was detail-oriented in planning out all the plants, plus electrical, irrigation, hardscape, and lighting details. As a plus, he came up with the idea to convert our old worn shed into a gazebo that is now a highlight visual feature. All our visitors now comment on how beautiful our backyard is, and our whole family enjoys spending time there. read more

From start to finish, this was a five-star experience. Darryl and I connected right away during our first meeting. He brings a wealth of knowledge, professionalism, and genuine passion to his work. His design was outstanding--both visually impressive and clear for the landscaper to follow & implement. He patiently answered all of my questions throughout the process. In the end, he even hand-placed the dry creek himself, achieving stunning results. I would absolutely work with him again on future projects. read more

Our landscaping project has finally finished. We hired Darryl as the architect and he worked with a landscaping company to carry out the entire project. He collected our initial requirements and came back with three plans. We quickly decided on one of them and iterated through a couple of times. We have redone the front yard, side yard and backyard (kept the existing swimming pool.) We now have a sustainable front yard with huge rocks with artificial grass that our neighbors told me how great it looked. The backyard is extended with travertine tiles, added a new BBQ kitchen island, a water feature, a huge shade sail and two feature walls to create an intimate entertaining space. We enjoy the whole backyard and its cozy ambience. We are very happy with the result and would highly recommend Darryl for any landscaping projects. read more

Landscape Nirvana - a patio with a table and chairs - Landscape Architects or Designers Near Me

We hired Darryl, the owner of Landscape Nirvana, to perform a complete redo of our backyard. The flat lot is long and narrow and extends between a building on either end. Mature oak trees cover about half the area. We were looking for a couple of things: a plan for a long pathway to connect the living quarters at either end of the lot that would be visually appealing and practical, and a comprehensive plan for low maintenance drought tolerant plantings. Aside from the oak trees, all other plants were removed, so pretty much a blank slate. Our meetings with Darryl were very productive and fun The three alternate plans he presented were very helpful in coming up with a final concept. What Darryl brings to the table, among other things, is a clear concept of what the installed landscape will look like. It is hard for the average homeowner to look at a paper plan and visualize it. When the wonderful crew of installers were finished, we marveled at the way all the elements came together for a truly harmonious whole. This included pavers, flagstones, drip irrigation system, accent lighting, garden stones, a water feature, and of course a wide variety of trees, bushes, low plants, flowering specimens, etc. It truly transformed our backyard into a useful and mellow outdoor space. read more

His landscape team which he recommend was the best and implemented Darryl plans exactly . They have worked with Darryl many years and this relationship made a huge difference. I wanted to create a garden that would be a Zen like sanctuary as like so many of us, I find ourselves more at home. I interviewed a number of landscape designers and settled on Landscape Nirvana. I was so impressed with Darryl right off the bat. Within a short period of time he was able to understand my vision and take it to a whole new level. He is not only creative but highly knowledgeable on what plants will work in our climate and environment. He provided three renderings and nailed it the first time around. Super easy to work with, flexible and he takes enormous pride in his work which shows throughout my yard. The contractor he hired was equally impressive. They set expectations and met them all along the way and the foreman worked shoulder to shoulder with his workers vs showing up once and taking off. I highly recommend Landscape Nirvana for any landscape needs! read more

I've been wanting to have a Japanese style zen garden for a long time. Daryl helped to make my dream become true! He carefully took all my requests and made 3 proposals as wells plants recommendations. After finalizing the plan, he carefully picked the stone and set up a small rock fountain, which makes the garden looks more natural! Since the landscape was done, I've moved my working area next to the window to enjoy the view of my zen garden. It was a great experience working with Daryl and totally worth it! read more

Darryl designed a front/side/back yard remodel for us (Fall 2023). He delivered drawings & redesigns that helped us hone in on what we wanted. We have just completed our landscape remodel, Darryl did his magic and transformed our space to be much more functional. First we sit down and discuss what our vision is, then he came up with 3 drawings. We narrowed down to one. Then he helped us select a contractor, Gus. Gus, team and him work very well together. Throughout the process, they would meet and go over the project. Finally, when it came to planting and placing the rocks. Darryl came over several times to make sure everything is in order. The end result is beautiful! Thanks Darryl and Gus, now I can enjoy the zen garden, fireplace, beautiful rock fountain, and ample of spaces to entertain. read more

The yard and fence project was done over a year ago, but I was rather busy at the juncture of changing jobs so I didn't write a review until now. The craftsmanship is very disappointing. Upon completion, the fence door won't open and close properly and the fence wall is leaning outwards. The person who did the task had to come back twice to fix issues. For the door, he attached a string across the corners to tighten the door and that string has to remain there forever. He did charge me for that tool and his gas. For the fence, he argued that the fault is with the post (a long piece of wood bought from Home Depot) and it is likely that the piece of wood was not completely dry so it gave away with the pressure from the inside. And for this he has "no fix". During the process I had a couple email communication with the owner Darryl. He replied to the first couple email during "his vacation" and never followed up on my request to have a phone call and come over to the site and take a look. I tried to be very objective here. I didn't keep any close-up pictures but with these you can see the gaps and distortions clearly. I won't recommend working with Landscape Nirvana. read more

We are grateful to have found Darryl and Landscape Nirvana. Darryl was accessible, prompt, responsible and professional. He listened carefully to what we were hoping to achieve, provided thoughtful suggestions and ideas and expertly executed a landscape design for our backyard that was functional and beautiful. Darryl has a gift for landscape design and aesthetics and added several design flourishes that elevated our backyard landscaping beyond what we had initially conceptualized. Among other things, he built a rock fountain that was both natural and unique, and he designed a walkway of pavers that spanned an area of pea gravel in a subtle, artistic pattern that complemented the overall flow and feel of the backyard design. It's clear that Darryl takes pride in the quality of his work and cares that his customers are happy with the outcome. The end result of Darryl's work exceeded our expectations, and we highly recommend Landscape Nirvana. read more

Darryl met with me right be shelter in place. He asked me what I wanted. Then he came back with 3 designs to choose from. I picked one with minor alterations. Then he got a a bid from a landscape construction company and I signed it. It took awhile before the work could be started but I am thrilled with the results. It may look a little barren because I went with drought tolerant but wait until next year when the plants fill out! read more

We just finished a pretty significant backyard redesign project with Darryl. It turned out amazing! From the beginning when I met Darryl, I could tell he is very thoughtful and detail oriented with his work. He showed us multiple options/designs based on our preferences, and did many iterations on the design as we went through the process. It was hard for us to visualize exactly how the yard would look, and Darryl helped walk us through that process very nicely. It included plant designs/locations, hardscape, irrigation and lighting. Once we finalized designs, Darryl helped us select a contractor based on needing several rock walls built on a sloped yard. The one we ended up going with had worked with Darryl before so we were confident they would be a good choice. I was worried that Darryl's involvement would stop once we locked in designs, but he acted as the part time project manager for the job once work started, as we on site multiple times to help direct rock placement, plant locations, and building the small waterfall that he designed. About 2.5 months later, the job is done and we are so happy! We highly recommend Darryl's landscape design services. read more

If you want someone to do exactly what you ask for and do it well, use Landscape Nirvana. And if you want to elicit an expert's opinion and have them work with you to turn your ideas into an even better solution, use Landscape Nirvana (aka Darryl Furuya). I called Darryl to help me refine a past landscaping job he did. I presented the new problem (dogs peeing on plants and generally wreaking havoc). He suggested I go more natural by augmenting the dry creek with large boulders and by planting hardier, larger plants and fewer fragile flowers. He took my request to add path lights to the seating area and extended it (with my approval) to encompass spotlights in the creek bed and on two trees. Darryl returned several times until I was satisfied with the softness and angle of the spotlights. Awesome! I most appreciate Darryl's considerateness, expertise, and, ultimately, the magic that he and his staff worked. read more

Our entire backyard renovation has just finished and we love our finished product! We can't wait to see it become even more beautiful over the coming years. When we first met with Darryl we had a general idea of what we wanted -- to add enhancements to our existing yard and also to create different looks with water conservation in mind. Darryl presented us with three great plans and we ended up combining two of them. The resulting design incorporated a curvilinear lawn area and a separate Zen garden. Darryl also added a rock river bed that we wanted and specified plants, trees and grass. Darryl supervised the construction and he even lifted and placed some stones himself personally to make them look just right in ideal spots. I am a visual and detailed person and I was always asking Darryl questions. I soon found out that Darryl had already thought out every facet of the installation and had taken care of all my questions. Darryl also introduced us to a great contractor. He and his crew worked hard, were conscientious, and cleaned up after each day's work. The quality of Darryl's work is exceptional. HIs designs reflect his professional design background with 10 years experience in the landscaping business. His projects are creative, intuitive and shows his vast knowledge of water conserving yet beautiful vegetations. He was prompt with his work but he also took a lot of time finding out what we wanted and was very patient when we weren't sure. He made suggestions that were always good. We can't say enough good things. A couple of my friends are already talking with his company to renovate their yards! We highly recommend Landscape Nirvana for any landscaping needs and I would not hesitate to call them with any work in the future. read more

A friend of ours had used Darryl for their backyard landscape remodel; my husband and I were so impressed with the results that we ended up using him for our own backyard. Darryl worked with us to develop just the right mix of design elements within our price range. He is very thoughtful in his design ideas, with a very appealing appreciation for natural beauty, balance of hardscape with landscape and making the most of spaces, both big and small. He takes great pride in his work and cares deeply for the environment as well, which we found helpful in creating a backyard that minimizes water usage. Darryl also understood that we have absolutely no green thumb, so maintenance for the landscaping is minimal. Even when there were issues with the contractor who implemented on the design (e.g. delays, not showing up as promised), Darryl served as diplomatic a mediator as possible and helped us work through the difficulties. If you're looking for a beautiful, well-balanced, sustainable landscape via a very thoughtful designer who is easy to work with, look no further than Darryl Furuya and Landscape Nirvana. read more

We recently completed landscaping a new build with Darryl, front/back/side yards, he was great. We feel so fortunate to have come across Darryl and Landscape Nirvana to redo our entire landscape. Darryl was extremely easy to work with and gave us excellent guidance to create a outdoor space we truly love and are proud to share with family and friends. We had an idea what we wanted but could not have dreamed of the beautiful final outcome without the vision and expertise of Darryl. From the beginning we felt he heard our desires and concerns and came up with several drawings that would make us happy. He suggested plants(showed me pictures), stones and structure designs that we never would have thought of but so glad he did! We were also lucky to have Darryl match us up with Martin and Landscape Pros who helped make the plans into reality. They worked really well with each other. It's been several months since completion and as the plants have grown and bloomed, we now have a resort in our own backyard! We truly love spending time outside relaxing in our beautiful new space! Darryl also transformed our front yard into a low maintenance space that is full of curb appeal. Darryl was involved from start to finish of the project making sure everything looked great and went according to the plans. We couldn't be happier with the work Darryl did for us and highly recommend him to everyone. read more

Amazing experience!! We had a hard time finding a reliable, practical, and reasonable landscape designer for our backyard, but Darryl was exceptional to work with. He listened to what we wanted, provided us several options, and created a design that has turned out even more beautiful and functional than we had hoped. We worked with Darryl's contractor, Gus, who also went above and beyond our expectations...reliable, friendly, hard working, and had an eye for detail. We absolutely love working with Darryl! Our second project was a downward hill with multiple retaining walls. I couldn't imagine not having his design expertise. After years of trees, the backyard touted as no maintenance (because it's so thick with trees and brush you can't access) to a wonderful space with multiple areas for family fun with a garden that is drought tolerant, bird and pollinator friendly, meandering staircase, and more than we asked for! From my husband's perspective, Darryl is the go to man on the job if there are any questions and is top notch on customer service. My husband was in construction for 38 years and he has pretty high standards. Everyone in our family loves the project. My neighbors have come by to tell us how nice. It really is a joy, especially now...we feel so fortunate to have this beautiful sanctuary. Darryl really is 5 stars and creates the space YOU want. Landscape Nirvana has worked with us at not one but two houses! We hired Daryl a second time when we moved after the great job he did with our tiny yard in Menlo Park. We have a large yard now and he did a great job with that as well! I especially appreciated Daryl's questions about us and how we liked to use our house and yard. It led to a wonderful design that really complemented our desire to entertain and our need for a good space for young kids. We receive SO MANY compliments on our yard and I have referred Landscape Nirvana many times. Darryl is very good at understanding what you want even without specific details or pictures coming from the home owner. By simply supplying information the problem areas of your current layout, what you would like to use your space for, general price range, and general style, he was able to address all of our issues and come up with a plan that was not only aesthetically pleasing but also that matched our surroundings. He is very clear that he is a designer, not a contractor so if you're planning a "do-it-yourself" project some issues may come up with the design that a contractor would have been able to address. But from a concept standpoint he was right on. read more

Darryl has a real talent and enthusiasm for landscape design. His knowledge is vast and his ability to be innovative and flexible is ever present. He is an excellent listener and very patient in helping you explore what you want. He made the evolution of our design - from a spoken idea to a beautifully rendered plan on paper to a fully executed landscape - a joy to experience and behold. Besides accomplishing a gorgeous hillside of azaleas, rhododendrons and Japanese maples set amongst huge lava rocks which he personally helped put in place, he executed a meandering, authentic dry creek, a peaceful and natural waterfall/pond, two natural and winding lava rock stairways, and several tranquil spots to sit and enjoy a special feature or nature and beauty at large. His selection of plants ensures perpetual focal points. In other words, he has created for us a personal paradise which dynamically changes with the seasons . His intuitive values about nature and sustainability were integral to the overall success of the design. We are proud when everyone who visits exclaims how his design is so beautiful yet fitting to the environment. Jim Boyce and Kris Otis Novato CA. read more

I hired Darryl last summer to help us design our entire landscape. He did the design and plans, gave us a couple of referrals to contact to do the actual physical work, and also helped oversee the project as needed. His prices were fair and were in the upper middle range of the people we talked to. Out of all the people we talked to, I liked Darryl's personality the best. He was respectful, calm, easy going, and friendly. His philosophies on water management were the same as mine as well. After the initial consultation, he quickly turned around a first draft of the overall plan and had a friend of his do a rough estimate on what the cost might be. That really helped us decide what we wanted to proceed with. (we decided to scale down the front yard and just concentrate on the back yard) The plans he drew up were very detailed and his turn-around time was very quick. All of the contractors that we talked to were impressed with the detail of the plans which helped them make an accurate bid. Once we decided to go with one of his referrals, the work proceeded at a good pace and Darryl's involvement was less as we expected. I think he took care of buying the plants and transporting them to the house, but I'm not 100% on that. The only area where I might deduct a half star was when it was time to lay out the plants before they were put into the ground. The contractors laid out the plants as they thought they should go, but I was concerned that they weren't following the plans as Darryl had drawn out. I called Darryl with my concerns and asked him to come by the house and double check their work (even though Darryl was scheduled to leave on vacation the next day). He did come by and sure enough, the majority of the plants weren't in the right locations. I expected Darryl to take care of that without me bugging him about it, so that was my only blip in an otherwise wonderful experience. Now that the landscape has grown into the space, we are enjoying our yards a lot more! Unfortunately, a few of the plants died due to my errors. :( I would definitely recommend Darryl for any landscape design needs. read more

Darryl was very patient and responsive in designing our backyard. I had LOTS of questions and comments about this plant selections and watering requirements, particularly in light of the drought watering restrictions and he took the time to fully explain and discuss the answers. Unlike other landscape designers I had interviewed, he is not pushy. He really takes the time to listen to what you want, and is very professional yet mellow. It's evident that he cares about his designs and customer satisfaction. When we bought our house we had a sloped back yard covered with ivy. It was a tough space but Daryl developed a number of different options for us including decking, small retaining walls, a rock river (we had a storm drain running down our property), and a comprehensive plan for new plants and trees in both the back and front of our house. He was very patient working with us and with the contractors to make sure we were absolutely delighted in the end. Its obvious that Daryl is very passionate about what he does and it shows in his designs and how he works with clients. He spends the time to understand your goals and doesn't push his own agenda. Thanks to Daryl we now have a little piece of paradise in our own back yard. read more

Darryl has been great to work with. He is most thorough and understands very well the key facets of all things landscaping and the best choice for and positioning of plants, shrubs, trees etc... Darryl's suggestions regarding our rear yard project involved building a new deck to maximize Ocean views, adding a flowing pathway, all whilst changing and mproving the look and layout of our rear area, both aesthetically and for practical purposes were the correct choices for sure. His plans were detailed. His follow up was above and beyond . When the shovel ready work began on our home, Rafael and his team executed Darryl's plans with great results and their hard work, often in tough and wet conditions have been exemplary and we are beyond pleased with their efforts and the results are outstanding. Without reservation I would fully recommend Darryl and Rafael for any and all landscaping expertise. read more

Darryl Furuya knew about every aspect of planning and implementing my backyard renovation. He designed the entire layout. He gave me separate drawings for the lighting, the drainage, the hardscape and the plants. He knew what lighting fixtures to buy, what double bullnose bricks to buy to top off the walls, the specs for the gopher wire to put under the planting areas. He hand-selected the rocks to make the planting area more interesting. He even designed and produced custom accent tiles to be embedded in the stucco on the walls. Darryl was wonderful to work with. He was available through the whole 2 months it took to bring his designs into reality. He coordinated smoothly with the cement people, the masons, the electrician. He installed the drip system himself and planted all the plants. The result is spectacularly beautiful and just the way I imagined it. I couldn't be happier. I heartily recommend Landscape Nirvana. read more

Our back yard is next to a creek and had some nice trees, but the rest was just dead grass and dirt. It also had some challenging sloping and not a ton of room to do the work. It was definitely too much of a challenge for my husband and me, who are normally do-it-yourselfers. Darryl put together three very nice designs for us to choose from, each with a theme and price point, and he kept in mind that we wanted both a drought resistant and colorful yard. He did a beautiful job and we couldn't be happier with the subtle grade change and hardscaping he designed, along with a very nice palette of plants, many of which are flowering now. They really capture the coastal light subtlely but nicely. We now can enjoy our yard and have places to sit within the beautiful landscaping and enjoy it rather than being stuck on a concrete patio. I feel like my backyard is nice enough to show off to our friends during parties. We have regular dragonfly visitors now, but the best thing, really, is having a nice place to sit, cradled under the redwood tree, to look out over the creek and back toward the beautiful flowering but drought resistant plants closer to the house. read more

Darryl had designed our neighbor's yard and we were so impressed by his work that we hired him to tackle a major portion of our back yard. He faced two challenges; creating a drought tolerant landscape and integrating it into the remainder of our yard that has an eclectic planting. He sought out how we would use this area of the back yard and how the garden fits into our lifestyle. We were delighted with his ideas, the plants he chose and his use of color, texture and stone. He is very aware of the environment he is working in and his gift is his ability to make the garden fit perfectly in with our house, the other portions of the yard and with our neighbors' yards as well. The large new section is really beautiful and the three areas of our back yard now have one continuous flow while preserving their individual characters. The yard, with its new seating areas, encourages us to spend more time out there while requiring much less maintenance. Even though, at this writing, the garden is still brand new, we're already receiving lots of compliments. Darryl is a team player, prompt in responding to our questions and requests, and working with us to include some prized plants from the old garden into the new. He is a pleasure to work with and we highly recommend him. read more
