We had the initial idea to put wood flooring down on the 1st floor of the new house with tile in…read morethe kitchen. I kept coming back to stained concrete though. I just liked the look of one solid piece. Finally after much convincing and showing her that the price would be less, my wife went for the idea too. My wife and I went to Modern Crete's showroom and looked over many colors and etchings with Stacy. We discussed doing a Yin Yang symbol in the entryway but ultimately decided against it. But it you wanted one, or anything else, Modern Crete can do it! They can even stain your floor blue! Looked beautiful. Like water! But we came away thinking we'd go for something more on the brownish side of the spectrum. We also learned there are different types of stains, but generally the acid stains work the best. The general consensus was that an overlay would work best of all to cover up our carpet tack holes (many people do leave these and stain different color borders), imperfections and such. Dan, the owner, and his top concrete specialist, Ben, came out personally to trowel on the overlay over 1400 sq ft. That was interesting to watch and a little tricky with the way our house is designed. It's very open, but the kitchen has two openings and the wall forms a sort of island. So two people have to be troweling at one time always keeping their edge of concrete wet. Finally they meet and pull it out the front door. By the end of the day it was dry! These guys are pros and pulled it off. Because of the way the stains react to overlays vs the original concrete, Ben recommended doing color test samples in the area where the stove would eventually sit after the overlay was complete. That's where we chose our final color out of a choice of four. Ben then sprayed the whole floor with the stain. Now my mistake was, after he did this, I brought my wife over to look at it. It's really not complete and doesn't look right until it's sealed. She sorta flipped out. Dan had to come over and try to explain the process again which he patiently did, I tried explaining, she just wasn't getting it. Finally I just begged her to look at it again after it was sealed. So that's the caveat here. Don't look at your floor until it is sealed! So Ben sealed it maybe up to four times in places where the overlay was completely absorbing the sealant. Each time the stain got a deeper and richer look. Oh by the way, there is a glossy seal and a satin seal. We went with glossy, but if you have pets and high traffic you may want satin. And is that seal ever stinky. It fumigated the house of bugs! Don't breathe it lest you be fumigated as well! The whole process took about a week to complete. And now the wife loves it. So does everyone who sees it. It needs to be waxed again and we haven't even moved in yet. That's pretty normal to do every month. And just an FYI, there is a waiting list typically for Modern Crete. We had to get on the schedule and it was about a 3 week wait. Even after we were pencilled in, people were calling wanting our spot! These guys are popular (they even did a certain celebrity's home recently) and well worth it. You don't want just anyone doing your floors! Can't believe I am the first to Yelp about this crew!

I contracted Jorge for an over $4000 job and had MANY issues with Jorge. Beware!…read more Prior to contracting Jorge, I was very unfortunate to miss the following preparation steps: 1. ENJOY THE WORST POSSIBLE RESULTS Check the pictures of the final results of the contractor's sodding work. Make sure you want the same. When Jorge did the sodding in February the sod looked dead (cause most likely it was). Jorge assured me it is "hibernated" and will recover shortly. Obviously, it never happened and, two months later, most of the grass is just as dead as it was at the moment of sodding (see the pics). It's remarkable that Jorge calls it a good work! 2. PREPARE TO GET DAMAGED AND WORK INCOMPLETE He was resodding my front yard. He didn't finish his job, left garbage and damaged the front yard appearance of my neighbor's property so I got a reasonable complaint from the neighbor demanding me to fix it. Quoting my neighbor: "The landscape crew that re-sodded your front yard left a strip of plowed up soil/mud between your property and mine. It looks terrible, for both properties." On my request to finish the job and fix the damage, Jorge stated that he "miscalculated" the costs and now wouldn't fix the damage without extra payment of $400. (See the snapshot) Unfortunataly, I have already paid Jorge in full by that time since he pressed me a lot asking to be considerate and enable him to pay his people. GET READY TO BE PRESSED FOR FULL PRE-PAYMENT Further, he ignored my messages and only agreed to do it after multiple calls and messages and after I promised to remove a negative review. 3. GET READY TO SEE UNEXPLAINED CHARGES ON THE ESTIMATE Jorge added items on the estimate that were just meant to increase the bill without discussion and explanation. Thus, I got $300 "Overhead" added to the estimate (see the picture). He "clarified" it was added because my project was bigger than usual. Note, he didn't provide any discount because the project was big. On the opposite he tried to charge me more! 4. PREPARE TO GET THINGS SUDDENLY BROKEN AND TO BE CHARGED TO FIX THEM I had an incident when my irrigation very unexpectaedly got pipes broken in 3 different places and 3 sprinklers suddently got broken ONE WEEK (!) following the irrigation fix by Jorge. Since the rest of the landscaping project depended on the irrigation I was forced to get it repaired immediately. The circumstances in which the above got broken were very strange and unlikely. 5. PREPARE TO BE CHARGE EXCEEDINGLY IF THE CONTRACTOR IDENTIFIES YOU BADLY NEED THE PROJECT DONE To fix the broken irrigation pipes (that unexpectedly got broken one week after being fixed by Jorge) he orignally tried to charge me $450 per pipe. So, $1350 to repair 3 small plastic pipes (see pic.). 6. GET READY TO THE ESTIMAES TO GET INCREASED ~X3 TIMES BECAUSE OF "MISTAKES" In my understanding, Jorge is trying to take advantage of the situation to bill you to the max and his quote are also rapidly increasing. So, for example, in the above incident, he first quoted me $450. Then, he notified me of a "quoting mistake" demanding $1350 probably taking advantage that I wasn't present fisically on the spot and that the project was urgent. 7. GET READY TO NEGOTIATE OR BE OVERCHARGED and paying ~3 times more. Now, when I told him I wasn't able to pay this much he retracted back to $550. 8. TAX EVASION Jorge apparently tried to avade taxation on his income. Thus he is urging you to pay him in cash or in personal checks. Since Jorge demanded it, I paid him in personal checks and he never provided a receipt. 9. PREPARE FOR COMPLAINTS FROM YOUR NEIGHBORS Jorge left garbage on the neighbors lawn and the bricks uncollected (see the pictures). (I can also provide snapshots of messages from my contractor). Jorge only agreed to collect the garbage after multiple calls and messages and lots of time spent on my part. Even then, his original proposal was to leave the garbage sacks uncollected for over a week on neighbors lawn

I guess that's there way of charging for an "estimate" Melissa also said the owner is a designer. If that's so, his expertise should be part of the process automatically. You know, the cost of doing business. I read in a previous review that their estimate was done contactless with photos sent by the customer. Looks like that's NOT their process any longer. He seems to have an eye for matching colors which can be a difficult for me. I could not find the original color of my home but Mauro was able to match it perfectly which is a challenge in itself with all the colors of blue to pick from. Mauro has also done done other work for me and spread some mulch in our yard and placed some rocks to make it look gorgeous.
