Two friends and I ate at Lakshana's on Ste. Catherine. The food was some of the best South Indian fare I have eaten. The tiffin was wonderful and the thalis my friends ordered were superb. Expected chettinadu cuisine. We ordered Mysore masala dosa and biryani. We were served somewhat burnt dosa and pulav. Excellent spice mix in pulav but it was not biryani though. Ambience is just okay. Not your Tajmahal or tirumalnayakar mahal !! Reminds me Ratna cafe from Triplicane area in Chennai back in early 2000s !! Asked for extra chutney - he said extra money. This is uncommon in the Indian food restaurants in New Jersey area though !! Posting a burnt dosa pic we were served here. I walked by this restaurant dozens of times before finally going in just this week! I am still thinking about all of the flavours of the dishes and food I got from this restaurant. Trust me: stop walking by and go in. You won't regret it! I ordered a couple of dishes including the specialty tiffin and the pakoras with a chai to finish everything off. The specialty tiffin has many different dishes to try including a dosa and idly. It was fantastic! Everything was extremely flavourful and some were surprisingly spicy! The pakoras were light and crispy, without being too greasy. I really loved the flavour and texture of the dosa. It was wonderful! Service was great: they first seat you and ask for your vaccine passport. There is a hand sanitizer at the front. The folks serving us was sweet and polite. This impeccably curated menu never ceases to amaze. I'm obsessed with this Tamil resto. I usually get my usual order of medhu vada with a chilli garlic masala dosa. But I decided to spice things up a bit and try the special tiffin; my goodness gracious it did not disappoint. This is a really scrumptious spread: delicious perfectly spiced sambar and 2 chutneys are the showstoppers, they are surrounded by beautiful and elaborate dishes like pongal, medhu vada, idli, and the scrumptious buttery sweet to top it all off. Pongal is a sacred dish, served during the eponymous Tamil harvest festival and can be made sweet or savoury; it is the epitome of Tamil comfort food. The savoury version is served with the special tiffin. The fermented flour of mixed rice and lentil is so delicately flavoured with ghee, cashew, fenugreek, asafoetida, peppercorn, fresh kari leaves, cumin, and ginger. It is simmered to perfection. I tried the podi idli. Podi is a coarse mixed spice powder made with ground dry spices that typically contains dried chilis, black gram, chickpeas, salt and sesame seeds. The spice mix is commonly referred to in informal speech as "gunpowder" or chutney powder and is mixed with melted ghee. Now that's the breakfast of champions. Holy utapam, Kumar, I'm gonna eat your face off. Imagine if utapam replaced the main actor in the film Face Off. I would totally go do a face off for some utapam. My go-to utapam is the tomato chilly garlic onion utapam. You'll love it. read more

The food was excellent. There's a limited number of entree-type dishes, looks like the Dosas are the way to go if you want a lot of choices. We will definitely go that route next time, although our choices were solid. We had butter chicken (as sort of a litmus test). No surprises, but in a good way. Chicken was fork tender and cooked perfectly. The Lamb Saag was the standout of the two, really great. Lamb was tender and plentiful, sauce mildly spicy and not overpowered by the spinach, a lot of nuance there. Rice was rice, but the garlic naan had a wonderfully absurd amount of garlic, like 6 cloves on each naan it seemed. Service was attentive and friendly. Ambiance was low key and no frills, but clean and pleasant. It's not fancy, not a date night kind of place. 100% utilitarian, but it's not trying to be anything more than that, that's why I give it 5 stars. read more

First time ordering we got Paleek Paneer, Butter Chicken (of course), Butter Naan and my FAVVV: Cheese Masala Dosa. everything was amazing. they even gave me extra chutney and sambar as I requested. the Dosa was PERFECTLY crisp, so light on the edges like a perfect dosa should be. Second time I ordered, the Cheese Masala didn't include cheese :( Thankfully I ordered with Skip and they were kind enough to refund me for the item THIRD time ordering with them - no cheese again. I ended up msging support going - is it just me or does the cheese masala dosa not come with cheese? I was genuinely confused. Bottom line: Not sure if it's just my undying love for cheese but I am a lil disappointed with their consistency and accuracy. However portion and quality compared to price is spot on!! read more

The Naan was very good. - Pretty convenient location: close to the metro CDN Cons: - More expensive than the Indian restaurants at Jean-Talon: ex. 12.99$ butter chicken VS 8.99$ at Chand Palace - Bad samosas: not enough filling, too much crust. The ratio was off. However, the sauce that came with the samosas were great. - Bad service: the waitress was slow and not very friendly. We also had the 10% off check-in bonus from yelp but after A LOT of asking here and there, they finally said that that coupon is no longer valid (even if we literally just got it after checking in). They did end up giving us 10% off, but it felt like a lot of hassle for a coupon that was clearly valid. It was just them who forgot to remove it from yelp (I assume). Would I go back? Probably not. We got some lovely takeout Indian food for dinner. This restaurant is one that my partner is a big fan of and frequently visits. We ordered some naan, some basmati rice, and 2 curries. We got a shrimp curry and a chicken vindaloo. Everything was packed well and ready at the correct time for pickup. The rice was nice and fluffy and the naan was chewy and pleasant. The curries were hot and the shrimp were plentiful. The tails were still on, so you'll have to do a bit of finagling with your fork. The chicken vindaloo (true to its name) was quite spicy. Unfortunately I have a very low spice tolerance...my partner had ordered without consulting me and there had been no "spicy" marking on the menu so they thought it'd be fine. The curries were very flavourful but I could not eat as much as I would've liked. But overall it was a good meal, and authentically spicy from what I could tell! I really like how they do not have the staple Indian dishes you find in most Indian restaurant. Again, cannot stress enough how attentive and kind the service is. Must try's: - the dal with spinach - the malai kofta (*********) - the uttapam - the onion pakora (?- fried onions) - palak paneer - lamb sag and these are just the ones i can remember! We had a lunch with family and friends at Lakshana's, and I am planning to return for dinner soon! The restaurant has been renovated recently, and it is bright and immaculately clean. Staff is friendly, the menu is huge and features many of the South Indian favorites that we have devoured on our travels in India, such as dosas, biryanis, idlis etc. The curry menu is equally delicious, and the portions generous.They also have plenty of choices for vegetarians. The chicken tandoori was dry like every other Indian restaurant out there, the chicken curry sucked and I found it very difficult to get myself to eat anything on the thali. Well we went there as a last minute resort while driving on that road. The place was empty, with red tacky table cloths and a very distinct odour. I was about to leave but then my family really was hungry. We ended up ordering both north Indian and south Indian food. And both were average... very average. We were very fortunate to have tried this great restaurant, with amazing food and even more wonderful service. The food was straight forward South Indian food simplistic yet magnificent in its taste. We tried the Ghee Masala Dosa, chicken 65 Biryani, egg Kothu parota, beef Sukka and several filter coffees. Being South Indian, I will say this is as close to home cooking as you can get.
