We must have come during a time that was not so busy as it was very easy for us to be seated. The dining room is beautiful, with white table clothes at each table, and great service to match. Since my stepsister is vegetarian, we all ordered a variety of vegetarian appetizers and entrées to share, as well as a few cocktails and glass of wine. I thought the garlic tandoori naan pretty good, but I REALLY enjoyed the yellow dahl tarka I ordered, as well as the samosas, and all the chutneys and sauces. We were staying at the Ritz which is a short walk from here. Fortunately, the concierge was able to call on a Sunday night and convince them to provide us with a very last minute table request. Not many places open on Sunday for dinner evidently in Montreal. Place was buzzing and we were quickly seated. Service was attentive despite the large party next to us. Samosas, chicken curry, salmon tandoor were all very good. Pleased that there was a coat rack near the bar as the dining room is tight. (noise levels are moderate though.) This did require some considerable travel as Le Taj is located in Montreal, Quebec, Canada but I have to say it was definitely worth it. It is Montreal's oldest Indian restaurant, here for 40 years, and it shows. We arrived late on October 9th after battling some impressive traffic. We found Le Taj walking around near our hotel. The ambiance on Oct 9th around 10pm, on Canadian Thanksgiving no less, was classy and full of people. We were nonetheless seated right away. Onto the good stuff, the food stuff...for myself I ordered "The Feast", for $60 CAD, you receive: One appetizer, one soup or salad, naan bread, one meat dish, one vegetarian dish, basmati rice, one dessert, and coffee or tea. My wife ordered the chicken Tikka Masala. Soup was an austere lentil soup that was soft with an unexpected spice. Next up was the Samosa Chaat with a trio of sauces. It was a crunchy, flavorful delicacy made of chickpeas and many great spices. For meat dish I had the Tandoori Chicken which was a hearty, delicious and tender portion. Vegetarian dish was an extremely flavorful chickpea dish with some mango and spice. The naan bread was amazing, great for soaking up the remaining sauces. Dessert was a homemade ice cream, no added sugar, very pure, with the taste of freshly ground pistachio. The perfect end to this feast was a mint tea. Amazing!!!! I am a lover of Indian foods and all things rice-y , flavorful, and expertly herbed and spiced. Le Taj did all of these in spades. We were fortunate to find this place on Thanksgiving Night while visiting Montreal and from the moment we stepped in we were greeted by the subtle ambience of a quality establishment, in other words - take a look around and you just know you're in a for culinary experience. I tried the Chicken tikka masala with basmati rice. My husband ordered 'The Feast' with a soup , appetizer, meat, veg dish, dessert, and tea. Le Taj was a great meal for a chilly Montreal evening. As always, Indian cuisine is the perfect choice for a mixed dietary couple since the menus offer extensive vegetarian choices. This is going to be very unhelpful though since I don't remember, even after looking at the menu, what I had. I know I had a soup and a chicken entree (not a tandoori though). We also had garlic naan. So, I can't help you decide what to get, but what I can do is tell you that between my 2 dishes and my wife's vegetarian appetizer and entree, we both thoroughly enjoyed this meal. I also had a glass of one of their Amrit whiskeys and I have to say that the Indian whiskeys I've had have been a really pleasant surprise. The interior is very nicely decorated, modern but also with ethnic touches, and perfect for a date night or any special occasion. Service was okay. Wasn't necessarily bad but wasn't anything special. I dont know if we'd come back if we return to Montreal-there may be other Indian restaurants to try-but I wouldn't object. read more

First meal in Montreal! It's a good thing that the night we decided to have Indian food was rainy and gross, so this restaurant provided a nice respite from the terrible weather. It was very charming and cozy and we loved the statues holding candles and the fact that they bring an extra little trolly to your table for all your dishes (smart). They could have bumped up the heat in there though. There's a full bar, but unfortunately the tonic one of us had on with her G&T was pretty flat. We started with the two soups: the dahl and mulligatawny. The former was bland and unimpressive, but we loved the latter, which was brimming with flavor and really hit the spot. For mains, we got the butter chicken and shrimp saag, along with some rice and garlic naan. A couple things that annoyed us: rice was not included for the hefty-ish price tag and the portions were really small. The butter chicken was basically dry meat in a bowl of pink cream: devoid of spice, moisture, and interest. We had to add the spicy carrots from the dip tray to have a meaningful eating experience. We loved the sauce in the saag, but the shrimp was rubbery and chewy and did not taste fresh. Naan was excellent. What sealed this place's fate for three stars was the dessert, however. We ordered the mango kufti and what came out was a pre sliced version that was hard as a rock and that you could tell had been sitting in the freezer for days if not weeks. Such a disappointment! While we appreciated the friendly service and nice atmosphere, we found the food to be lacking overall and wouldn't recommend this place in good faith, which is a bummer, because we wanted to love it. My husband and I visited Le Taj for the first time last week. Indian food is my very favourite cuisine, so I was really looking forward to this dinner. We were seated right away and given menus. The restaurant was quite full, but we were lucky to be seated despite the fact that we didn't have a reservation. We ordered garlic naan, lamb korma, saag paneer and plain rice. The food came quite quickly and everything was piping hot. We loved all of the flavours and the naan was to die for. Each Indian restaurant has its own version of popular dishes, and what I loved about the food here, was that it's on the drier side. What I mean is, the masala was a spectacular blend of onion, tomato, and spices. No oil or cream that would make it "soup-y." Also, the spice was just right for someone who doesn't do well with very hot foods, but I imagine they can really kick up the heat for those that do. Okra (Bhindi Masala): 10/10 (No excess oil) Paneer Palak: 10/10 Naan: 10/10 So Fresh and Warm! Seekh Kabob: 10/10 (small pieces though) Chicken Tikka Masala (Not my favorite here but don't want to ding them because it's just a matter of recipe preference. As a Guji, I have high standards when it comes to Indian restos and this was pretty good. We are visiting from the states and wanted to find a joint near the hotel on a Monday and this place was open and calling our name. For appetizers we ordered the pakora and chat papdi. The pakora was a larger fritter than I prefer and would have been nicer in smaller crispier pieces, but it was still flavorful. They also served the appetizers with a nice boat of tamarin, mango chutney, and raita which was a nice touch. For the main we got butter chicken, veggie korma, rice and garlic naan. I have had many butter chickens in my life (I know, not very guji of me) and this was a very solid state butter chicken. It was not as buttery as I am used to but it tased nice and fresh and seasoned well. The veggie korma was also very fresh- I am used to a greasy korma with lots of ghee but it was still tasty. The naan was to die for- clearly made fresh in back with lots of ghee. The service was 5/5. The waiter was attentive and friendly. They brought out a little table to extend our table so we could fit all of the food which was a nice touch. The restaurant has a full bar with a good selection of wines. We ordered the sampler for appetizers along with some chaat items. Nice, high ceilings and a certain air about it. It's definitely more on the fine dining side. Staff is friendly and was helpful in making decisions on the menu. The food was generally pretty good. The chicken tikka masala had a grainier texture than i'm used to, but was still good. The naan was nice and fluffy (as it should be). Also had some biryani, the chana masala and a cocktail.
