I'm glad to say that this is no longer a necessity: there is solid Burmese fare smack dab in the middle of the Bywater. This isn't my first go-round with this particular dish, yet I thoroughly appreciated the exuberance and kindness with which the classic style of preparing and eating tea leaf salad was explained, as well as the meticulous detail in the preparation and explanation of ingredients--just look at it! My request for the vegan version was completely acknowledged and respected, too, so no worries, for the vegans and vegetarians out there. There are sufficient options for us too. Long story short, if someone truly, deeply cares for what they do, it speaks loudly and means more to me than the sum of its parts, and that's exactly what I got here: much love. read more

They have a large menu with lots of unique options that you can get elsewhere. I got the noodles. When the food came out, it was huge portion sizes, a little bit confused on the pricing since it didn't seem to match on the menu, I think on the menu it was around $17 and some change however, the total after tax came to be around $22. Located in St. Roch Market, Laksa Nola serves very delicious comfort food. I was greeted by Chef Lin who is hands on and very nice! I was hungry and got the Nasi Lemak with kingfish. This was so good! The crispy anchovy and nuts, soft egg, crispy/flaky roti went well with the rich curry and sambal. The different textures and tastes in this meal were an experience. We swung by St. Roch Market on a rainy day and ordered some chicken and shrimp shumai ($10). It's freshly steamed and prepared on the spot after you order. The shumai are a little smaller than the size of a ping pong ball each and the plate comes with a set of 6. The sauce under the dumplings is a sweet and salty thick sauce. The sauce provided in the cup is soy sauce-based with finely minced ginger. Garnished with parsley, it's very pleasing to look at. Overall, it was yummy, but nothing phenomenal. Just regular shumai dumplings, but the sauces were flavorful and delicious. I think it's a little overpriced for 6 dumplings, I'd expect maybe $6-8 instead? read more

Located in St Roch Market, Laksa is one the first Burmese restaurant that I have ever tried. I ordered a few dishes including the Roti Canai, Laksa Bowl and the Omu Noodles. The Laksa Bowl was my favorite and it was very flavorful. I would def come back for this. While taste may vary, I thought that the Omu Noodles were just OK- a bit sweet and sour. The Roti Canal was OK. Service was very fast and the staff kindly brought our food directly to our table, very nice of him. The atmosphere was great, typical of a casual food hall. A hidden Burmese gem in NOLO Chef Lin Lin opened a Burmese food stall inside St Roch Market food hall in New Orleans. Despite laksa in the name, most dishes are Burmese. She has a few Malaysian dishes and her own creations too (like omu noodles). Her Burmese dishes are authentic and delicious. I didn't get to try other dishes. Lovely flavors and yummy food! I had the Rainbow Salad with tofu as my protein (non-vegetarian protein options include chicken and shrimp). Their spice level is 0-3. I got 2, which I expected to be medium spicy, but it was definitely more on the mild side. Felt more like a noodle dish than a "salad," and it's a good option over their hot soups considering the warm weather lately! I've also had the Laksa Bowl with chicken (you can also choose shrimp) and rice noodles (egg noodles are your other option). Delicious! And it came with a hefty portion of protein. My only complaint is that the noodles were over boiled and they were soggy/mushy, making them hard to eat with chopsticks. It would've been perfect had they been chewier and not overcooked! One other thing I noticed is that compared to the other vendors at St. Roch Market, Laksa staff doesn't bring you your food. Someone will just yell your name (very) loudly and that will be your cue to go get your dish lol. Looking forward to trying more dishes soon! read more

We went on a Friday evening around dinner time for take out, so we would have thought it would be the best time to go. Instead we got omu noodles that were okay, if cold, but the chicken tasted old. Got a stomach ache from the meat/eggs, not looking forward to tomorrow. The curry was slightly below passable, but a little gross and oily. The beef also tasted old and was questionable. We could not finish this meal, and threw most of it away after tasting the meat and fearing for our stomachs. We're thankful we didn't risk getting the shrimp or salmon, but it would have probably ended up in the same place. The only thing we were able to finish was the roti, which tasted good, but it is kind of hard to mess up bread. I am not sure how this place got so many 5 star reviews, maybe a weekend night isn't the time to go here. Be aware that this place doesn't really have a kitchen, it is more like food trucks that have opened stalls. So they cook their meat on hot plates and stuff. While the place looks clean/nice, and the location is pretty good, you could find better noodles for a cheaper price at a really great Thai place in walking distance. The service wasn't bad, but they got slow with just a few orders. We don't mean to be mean or negative just because, but wanted to warn someone in case they're hungry and this meal might not work out for them either. read more

The Rainbow Salad is by far my favorite dish in all of nola!!! I have been to every Thai restaurant in this city and Laksa is where it is at!! Do not miss out on this family owned, delicious and most importantly clean restaurant! They also own the sushi spot at the front of the market and the sushirito has kept me going during my pregnancy. After attempting to order via the Yelp app, with no luck, and a phone call that went unanswered, I was finally able to successfully place an order on their website for pickup. After a text confirmation, I make the quick trip over to St Roch Market and found a parking spot near the front door on a quiet, rainy Monday evening. I let the two staff members know that I'd placed an online order. I could tell by watching them work that there was an order or two ahead of me, so I made my way down to the Mayhaw bar for a "happy hour" old fashioned while I waited. My order was ready a few minutes later (ten minutes earlier than promised on the website). Five minutes later I was home with my Burmese coconut soup with shrimp, onu noodles with chicken and a side of roti. Everything was hot, fresh tasting and delicious! I'd definitely order from Laksa Nola again when I'm in the mood for some tasty noodles and/or coconut soup. read more

Great new addition to the St. Roch market serving Malaysian and Burmese food. Being a total virgin to Malaysian and Burmese cuisine I looked for something familiar and settled on the Shrimp Eggrolls and Laksa Bowl with Chicken. The eggrolls were delicious, served steaming hot and packed with shrimp and the three dipping sauces are a fun way to expand the flavor profiles of the dish. For my Laksa Bowl I selected the egg noodles and level 2 spicy level. The Bowl come out hot and the broth was a great blend of flavors with a wonderful aroma that made each spoon fill a burst of flavors. The chicken that accompanied the noodles was also good but I wish it had been sliced and placed in the bowl with the noodles and broth. There was also a bit of the cold noodle salad on the plate with the chicken that was absolutely yummy and I would pay for a whole bowl of that alone! The teas are very refreshing and I recommend you do a blend of the two. Really looking forward to trying all the other dish and wishing Laksa Nola and chef Lin much success. read more

Really love this spot; a mix of Malaysian & Thai cuisine, you will definitely feel the heat! I came back for their curry laska with shrimp - by far the spiciest thing I've eaten in New Orleans. The broth is creamy and spicy, with cucumbers and red onions to add a nice crunch of texture. Perfectly cooked eggs and tender shrimp. It was my first time really venturing out into *the world* when I decided to stop into St. Roch Market for lunch. I was relieved to see that they were asking customers to "mask up", so I put on my cute homemade mask and decided to see what I was in the mood for. Selection was limited, but I was delighted to see Laksa NOLA was open serving tasty Burmese food. Looking over the menu, I knew I wanted noodles and spring rolls. I got the Laksa Bowl with chicken and it was basically a ramen-like bowl packed with an egg, tofu, bean sprouts all swirling around in delicious broth. They also give you a special sauce on the side, if you're looking for some kick. The spring rolls are shrimp spring rolls and they are very light and served with Laksa's special sauce. They were delicious! The staff here was beyond friendly and did everything they could to make me feel comfortable throughout the entire process. We've been twice now (the second time bringing other people with us who have traveled to Burma) and both times were wonderful! The dishes were made fresh to order and were on point! Lin makes the menu really customizable, which was appreciated since we like our food spicy. She even kindly obliged by making some of the dishes spicier than her "typical level 3." I love a proper spice level that makes me sweat and my nose run, but doesn't burn my mouth or give me reflux. The hubs and I traveled to Malaysia years ago and we haven't had good, authentic Malay food since then honestly. The portions are huge, larger than we expected, and we ended up having quite a bit of leftovers to eat the next day. One cannot get more deliciously cooked food for their money! Chef Lin is so sweet and talented, if youre lucky enough to catch her behind the counter. While I wanted to eat the entire menu and hopefully will soon enough I ended up with the Omu noodles and shumai. The ground chicken and shrimp shumai were perfectly steamed and deliciouswith the go her dipping sauce. Seriously I cannot pass up a dumpling or the like.
