This is a fantastic running trail for so many reasons. Seems like an appropriate time for a list. Pros - It is long (for average/active runner). The main trail is almost 5.5 miles from one end to the other, then back again. -It is flat. There are only two or three very slight inclines. -It has lots of shade. I'd venture to say 80% is shaded. -It has mile markers. These can be either encouraging or depressing. -It is great for people watching. Tons of folks out and about. -It has parking on both ends. -It has water fountains on both ends. Heads up, they aren't exactly chilly. Cons -It can be really crowded. Not a huge deal. -Cyclist frequently speed by. Not a big deal. It's just alarming.. and those shorts and all. Plus, can they really get a good workout there? For real. You'd have to ride this thing 20 times on a bike to break a sweat. -There are a couple of areas where the creek can really stink. It's a sulfur smell. Yay! I'm a fan.

I can't believe in all of my years in Birmingham, and exploring all the trails it has to offer, I haven't been to this one in my own backyard. It is the perfect trail for exercising. The concrete is all level with no cracks. It has lines all the way down to help keep cross traffic in their own respective lane. A nice blend of shade through a lot of trees and being out in the sun. I wouldn't say it has a ton of elevation changes, but definitely has some. We parked at the soccer fields off of Columbiana and went all the way to the end (Brookwood Mall) and back. The whole loop was 5 miles, which was a good amount. And they have mile markers every quarter mile. So you can make your journey any distance you want. We will definitely be back!!

Pretty good trail, good shading and elevations are so so. The grounds and trail are always clean free of trash and other things. Scene is awesome regardless of where you park. Many times I park by the school and take the trail towards the mall this time I parked at the actually park and walked towards the office buildings, I will be taking that scene more often.

The far East side of the trail near the BP.

Perfect for running or biking. Right next to a river but the cars on the other side can get annoying during high traffic times

Occasionally enjoy a brisk morning walk with neighborhood friends. I enjoy the fresh air and the path offers both sun & shade.

Red Mountain Park is a fantastic place to spend an afternoon hiking, with so much to explore. While…read morevisiting Alabama, my friends and I decided to spend a couple of hours here and ended up hiking about 5-6 miles. There's truly no shortage of trails, and the variety keeps things interesting the entire time. The park definitely offers some challenging uphill climbs--especially for us Florida girls who aren't used to elevation--but we powered through and felt very accomplished. One of my favorite highlights was Rushing Rendezvous; the idea of a suspension bridge tucked up in the treetops always excites me, and this one did not disappoint. Of course, when we saw Trail 5 marked as most difficult, it was a no‑brainer--we had to take it. I really enjoyed reading about the history along the way, especially learning more about the Birmingham Mineral Railroad site. I do wish there had been a bit more signage around some of the remaining structures so we could soak up even more history, but honestly, guessing their original purpose became part of the fun. Hands down, I would absolutely come back to explore more of Red Mountain Park. It's a great mix of challenge, scenery, and history--and well worth the visit.

I'm so happy that I found this historical place. Such a great walking and hiking trail. There's also areas to get your cardio on and to sit, relax, pack lunch/meal to enjoy at the tables along the trail. Perfect for bike rides, bird watching and getting away without getting away. Add this place to your weekly workout routine.

I thought that it was interesting that the apartments below the trail had stairs leading up to the trail. Nice benefit to living in the area. I noticed a few of the residents heading up and down the trail with their dogs. Yes, this is a pet friendly trail with waste bins along the trail. The trail seems well maintained without being manicured. The overgrowth of brush is seen along the path without impeding the trail. The views over the city is great when walking, running or walking is nice. Great trail for bike riding, leisurely walks or increased cardio workouts. Bring your kids, pets and or family to capture some city views and get in a good workout. I will be back, definitely wearing a hat! The sun is bright up there!!

I saw several people walking along, a couple joggers and one person with a dog. Everyone was polite and respectful. I did have a gentleman stop and warn me about a man that was up the trail a bit that could potentially be troublesome or make me uneasy. I really appreciated him warning me and telling me to be safe. Aside from that, I had no concerns walking the trail alone. I took in all the beautiful city views and the random flowers along the way. I do wish it was kept up a bit better, however. There are downed trees that have been cut but not cleared, a trash can fallen over, etc It's a great place to get some movement in and take in the views!

I had never heard of this park/trail before and that shocks me considering how close it is to our house. This is parking across the street, but not a whole lot. Perhaps enough room for 6-8 cars. The entire trail follows a stream which adds in a picturesque scene as you cruise along. There is a historic market telling about the blast furnaces that used to be there. There were some people, but certainly not crowded. The trail was pretty smooth for the most part. Very few roots and other trip hazards. Really my only complaint is that its not long enough. And obviously some people ignore the dog waste bags provided for them at the beginning. But overall we loved finding this little gem and will definitely be going back!

It does these two things phenomenally well. There are a few benches, trash bins, doggie bags, educational signage, and parallel parking. The trail connects to the overall system of Mountain Brook Sidewalks and Trails and is part of the Red Rock Ridge & Valley Trail System. So if you're coming to run here be prepared to do some sidewalk running as well to get decent miles in. It's a nice change of scenery, but not really a destination park.
