We came here for a play that Children's Theatre our on called "The Girl Who Swallowed a Cactus". This is a nice park to bring kids to. There is space that you can walk/exercise around the lake. Watch out for ducks/ geese (you're in their territory). The space we were in is made up like a small amphitheater. We really enjoyed ourselves.

My favorite park in Birmingham! You know how in movies, there is always that one place where someone knows where to find someone when they have disappeared? Well, Avondale Park is that place for me. I call it my "thinking place". It is so peaceful and serene here, and I enjoy going here to clear my mind after a long day at work. I feed the ducks and geese sometimes, and sit by the water on one of the many benches. There is a walking track as well that you can walk on. Avondale Library sits next to the park, so you can venture up there, check out a book, and come back to the park to read it. There's even an amphitheater on site that hosts different family friendly throughout the year (Jazz in the Park, Movies in the Park, Park in the Park, etc.) Summary: Avondale Park is a great free, natural resource to take the stress away after a long day. It's everything a park should be: serene, peaceful, and beautiful.

Fantastically renovated urban space in a formerly undesirable neighborhood. That is Avondale Park in a nutshell. But let's crack that nut! A gorgeous wrought iron sign beckons you to come explore the hilly landscape that waits inside. Then, a lake comes into view, reflecting the trees, clouds, setting sun and rising moon, making for some excellent photo opportunities. All of the standard park features are there: benches, picnic tables, large grassy expanses, trees, clean air. But while this park might be tiny compared to Kensington Gardens or Central Park in NYC, it becomes mighty when all of its extras come into view. An outdoor, stone amphitheater provides an excellent setting for small concerts, choral performances, plays, and entertainment during charity events. During the recent Magic City AIDS Walk benefiting Birmingham AIDS Outreach, which was held at Avondale Park, several varieties of musical acts performed to the delight of the thousands of attendees and dozens of vendors that lined the road winding behind the stadium-style seating. The multitude of paved, stone and gravel pathways allowed hardcore event walkers and casual supporters alike to move throughout the venue with ease. During the release of 100s of red balloons in front of the lake during sunset to honor those who battle or were lost to AIDS was beyond breathtaking - the sun, clouds and balloons reflecting on the water was picture perfect. For those seeking physical fitness, the changes in elevation, stone steps in the amphitheater, and expansive green areas (perfect for yoga) create an outdoor gym from heaven. There is a lodge for indoor portions of events, bathrooms, and even some shaded areas for sunny day picnics. All in all, this is an excellently renovated park, next to a library (thank goodness we still have those!!!), in a quickly re-gentrifying area of Birmingham. It thrills me to see this park as a central feature of so many fantastic charity events and to have a green space near all of the fantastic bars, shops and galleries that are filling up 41st St South. Viva la Avondale! ps- minus 1 star for the sometimes quite sketchy folks who hang out in the park, the real potential of having your car broken into and/or being mugged, and the lack of non-parallel parking in the area (that one is personal for me... I'm terrible at parallel parking!!!)

Absolutely BEAUTIFUL park. Great place to walk, bring your pets, or play with the kids.

I'd probably give about 3.5 stars for Avondale Park. It's not necessarily in the greatest part of town, but it is certainly coming around and improving day-by-day. There are a lot of beautiful things about the park that people have been doing over the past couple years, and will do in the future. It's getting there, and is a very enjoyable place to visit during the day. It's near a lot of new, local businesses that people love hitting up nowadays, too. I really like the amphitheater, the pond, and the pavilions.

This is one favorite park to go to at night. I really love the lake and duck in the park. The most attractive part on the park is the outside theater and nice library beside it.

This is a great place to spend a sunny afternoon walking around the lake or just laying and relaxing in the sun. Love that it is dog friendly too. Afterwards, we love to walk over to Parkside or one of the many other Avondale bars to enjoy a drink.

Red Mountain Park is a fantastic place to spend an afternoon hiking, with so much to explore. While…read morevisiting Alabama, my friends and I decided to spend a couple of hours here and ended up hiking about 5-6 miles. There's truly no shortage of trails, and the variety keeps things interesting the entire time. The park definitely offers some challenging uphill climbs--especially for us Florida girls who aren't used to elevation--but we powered through and felt very accomplished. One of my favorite highlights was Rushing Rendezvous; the idea of a suspension bridge tucked up in the treetops always excites me, and this one did not disappoint. Of course, when we saw Trail 5 marked as most difficult, it was a no‑brainer--we had to take it. I really enjoyed reading about the history along the way, especially learning more about the Birmingham Mineral Railroad site. I do wish there had been a bit more signage around some of the remaining structures so we could soak up even more history, but honestly, guessing their original purpose became part of the fun. Hands down, I would absolutely come back to explore more of Red Mountain Park. It's a great mix of challenge, scenery, and history--and well worth the visit.

I'm so happy that I found this historical place. Such a great walking and hiking trail. There's also areas to get your cardio on and to sit, relax, pack lunch/meal to enjoy at the tables along the trail. Perfect for bike rides, bird watching and getting away without getting away. Add this place to your weekly workout routine.

I had never heard of this park/trail before and that shocks me considering how close it is to our house. This is parking across the street, but not a whole lot. Perhaps enough room for 6-8 cars. The entire trail follows a stream which adds in a picturesque scene as you cruise along. There is a historic market telling about the blast furnaces that used to be there. There were some people, but certainly not crowded. The trail was pretty smooth for the most part. Very few roots and other trip hazards. Really my only complaint is that its not long enough. And obviously some people ignore the dog waste bags provided for them at the beginning. But overall we loved finding this little gem and will definitely be going back!

It does these two things phenomenally well. There are a few benches, trash bins, doggie bags, educational signage, and parallel parking. The trail connects to the overall system of Mountain Brook Sidewalks and Trails and is part of the Red Rock Ridge & Valley Trail System. So if you're coming to run here be prepared to do some sidewalk running as well to get decent miles in. It's a nice change of scenery, but not really a destination park.
