This is an absolutely gorgeous park that sits on Lake Whitney. There are several different areas…read moreto it. One is the day use area but it was closed when we toured the location. Evidently, they are making it even better because it's under construction. There are covered picnic areas and access to the lake. The dam sits in the distance. There are also two camping loops that we discovered. We toured the West Loop one. It is well kept up and gorgeous. Each site we saw had covered picnic areas. Some pads weren't quite level and others were. There were also sites right on the lake. Of course, that could be windy at times or a perfect location for launching your kayak. We loved this park. It's well maintained and gorgeous.

Luckily for us we did have kids who were complaining of being tired by the midway point of it, so it is perfect for families. But if you are an avid hiker who hikes for miles and miles, this is not the spot. We did go to the beach to look around, but didn't get in as it is winter right now and was at 30-50 degree weather. It is a beautiful place, very clean and well kept. If you are coming in with family, this is perfect, but if you want to hike, this is not your spot.

As soon as I drove into the front entrance, I stopped in the office in order to print the day pass I purchased online yesterday. All three ladies were extremely friendly and helpful. They showed me the key highlights of the park on the map. Then I shopped their merchandise in the park store. The trails were very well maintained and laid out. Each path was clearly visible so as not to get lost or off the marked walkway. I even spent some time in one of the day use areas to read this month's issue of Texas Parks & Wildlife magazine. We were…read morecurious if the park had been kept up because so many of the Thousand Trails parks have not been. So, we discovered it's not like it used to be with all the pristine amenities and decor but it's still very nice. This is definitely a campground and not a resort. However, that's not bad. That's good because it has just about everything a resort has except you don't have neighbors right out your front door. Sites are large and you definitely have the woodsy feel because there are lots of trees. The park is big with many different loops for camping. Many of the sites sit under the trees making satellite difficult. However, there are also sites where satellite is not a problem. There are also many pull-thru sites. The main roads are in poor shape. Some places it's been patched but other places there are so many patches that driving through is quite rough. We saw quite a few sites with black bags over the electrical outlets so assume repairs need to be made. There is a family lodge and an adult lodge. Both have pools and the adult lodge has a hot tub. Plus there are courts available for sports plus even a mini-golf course. There is a ma & pa restaurant onsite. They weren't open the time we were there but it's a nice addition to the park. We have AT&T cell service and we struggled with data. I'm not sure location in the park would make a difference. Anyway, we would definitely return for a few days if in the area. This is one of the better Thousand Trails parks.

There is a waterfalls and a river and there is a good sized picnic area w plenty of benches. There are two sets of horseshoe pits a half basketball court and two volleyball courts. There is a nice overview of the river and falls from the bridge. According to the chamber of commerce the pavilion and or the stone tables as well as the stairs were built during the Great Depression as one of the building projects at the time. There are stairs down to the river but just a warning the steps are a bit steep and no food or drink is allowed down past the stairs. Once you get down there it really is beautiful. According to the local I talked with there today they allow swimming there in the spring if the water level is high enough. The water level changes a lot. The park has been recently renovated according to a sign that I had trouble photographing. You can see in the older pics that the foliage was becoming more overgrown and it is indeed tidier now. When the water is low supposedly there are paintings on the rocks that are hundreds of years old. There is some differences of opinion about who did the paintings. This town has a lot of history and I did read a sign that this is George W Bush's hometown. The pavilion is very nice and historical. The park is on fourth street. The address on yelp takes you to a historical plaque. Just look at the map from there and turn right at fourth and your there. Follow the green.

It was about an hour drive from Fort Worth, and it's eight dollars per person to enter the park. Your access gives you the ability to visit all national parks for the period in which you bought your ticket so 24 hours total. There's various trials you can do, we ultimately ended up doing two, and the moderate one is quite difficult due to the terrain. However, the overlook was a straightforward trail with a beautiful view at the end. I would say the times a lot to each trail are accurate, you wanna ensure you get there early because it does get hot in mind you it is Texas in the summertime. We packed lots of snacks, and had our water. We also took some time to dip our feet in and look at the Dino tracks up close. There's so many ways you can spend your day here, however, some quick exercise, and beautiful views definitely doesn't go wrong! You also get the opportunity to learn lots, and we took the time to take all the knowledge we could by reading through the exhibit in the welcome center. (:

There are many streams just waiting for some rain to fill them including a wonderful "wash pond". You have to walk the "Lost Trail" located in the area recently reopened after the flooding of the Leon River. It is beautiful with many trees, creeks waiting for rain and trails that tie into it. They also have great camping sites, really nice bathrooms, many picnic tables under trees and many other things to enjoy and explore. I have been to other State Parks and they all have something different to offer, but this one is my favorite. Whether you are there for the day or over night, I think you will really enjoy your time here. There is also some wonderful history here and I think that makes it more special.
